A new book, published by Dundurn Press, is now on the book-shelves. It has been written by Walter Pitman and details the life and times of Canadian composer Louis Applebaum. Mr. Applebaum had a very interesting life. He died in 2000 and was part of the Canadian music landscape, or even put in other words, he was the landscape. Mr. Applebaum was on the bleeding edge of a number of initiatives that are now taken as gospel in the Canadian music scene. Louis started out as a composer of film music and that remained with him all his life. Through this medium, he helped to found the National Film Board and composed music for both American and Canadian films that were landmark creations in their day. Louis was also a composer of theatre and television music. The first music ever heard at the Stratford Festival was Louis Applebaum's. The fanfares everyone hears at the end of intermissions at the Festival are Louis Applebaum's. The music behind numerous CBC television shows with regards to documentaries and playhouse events is Louis Applebaum's.
