A Short geography of Northern ontario. What precisely is Northern ontario? It'snot easy to pin down, since there are a number of definitions floating about.
http://142.51.17.253/jrp/nots/geograph.htm
What precisely is Northern Ontario? It's not easy to pin down, since there are a number of definitions floating about. However, the area delineated by the census divisions in the northern three-quarters of the province is generally accepted as the limits of the region. You can see a map of these regions (70k) by clicking on the icon at left , as well as check the most recent population statistics on these divisions.
Unlike the provinces themselves, Northern Ontario isn't a strongly defined region. In addition to the administrative definition of Northern Ontario's borders mentioned above, many people maintain their own definition of the region. Anecdotal boundaries include "anything north of Barrie", which is a bit of a stretch, unless you happen to live in Toronto. In addition to the cultural and administrative definitions, you could look at Northern Ontario as a separate physical region from the rest of the province. In all, there are a number of ways of defining Northern Ontario, all of which are probably valid. Despite the fuzziness of the line, there are differences between the northern and southern halves of the province. Why is this region distinct?

Why study in Canada? Canada has a reputation for its high quality education system, competitively priced tuition, and university degrees that are recognized worldwide. As a multi-cultural country with an emphasis on diversity, almost all of the world's ethnic groups are represented, and most ethnic foods and recreational activities as well. The standard of living in Canada is among the best in the world, and inhabitants of Canada enjoy the benefits of a very low crime rate and a well-developed high-technology industry.
For the past 6 years in a row, the United Nations has ranked Canada the number one country in the world in which to live. Their report, conducted each year, uses over 200 performance indicators to evaluate quality of life. Canada receives particularly high marks for its access to education, high life expectancy, and low crime rate.

Research and Teaching Interests: I have several areas of interest all related to my work as director of the Queen's GIS Laboratory. My long term research interest has been the spread and control of wildlife rabies, funded primarily by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. After many years of work on the epidemiology and modeling of the disease, we are currently working on improving methods for flight line planning and aircraft navigation for the delivery of air dropped baits containing an oral vaccine for rabies. Those methods are based on GIS and GPS and have been used very successfully in Ontario, New York and Texas. I am also interested in the distribution and delivery of health care services and we are working towards the development of a GIS based planning system to assist health planners in eastern Ontario. This work includes the analysis of emergency

ONTARIO
My first newsletter begins with a tribute to Anne Smith, the outgoing representative for Ontario. Anne has made an enormous contribution of time and energy on behalf of Geographic Educators in Ontario and across Canada. We wish her well as she embarks on a new phase of her life and enjoys some time with Dick Mansfield and their baby, Alexandria. My role begins with this newsletter. As a recently retired classroom Geography teacher and teacher/librarian, I hope to carry on the tradition of excellence in education for Geographers nationally and provincially during my term. Here are some items for your interest and information. How are your courses matching up with university courses? The following is an excerpt from a first year university course assigned text at Trent University. It is an introductory course in Human Geography. Here is a sample of the authors’ philosophy for choosing content in their textbook. Are you introducing these items in your classes?
