The Virginia Opossum ( Didelphis virginiana ) is the only living marsupial from North America. It is common in the eastern USA and has spread north and west. This large opossum lives in deciduous forests and prairies Virginia Opossums are nocturnal (most active at night). They sleep during the day in a den in a hollow tree or in an abandoned rodent burrow. Playing Possum : When opossums are attacked, they will "play possum," pretending that they are dead; they remain still, do not blink, and their tongue hangs out. This act often makes the attacker lose interest in the opossum. Some of their many predators include foxes and dogs. Anatomy : The Virginia Opossum is about 2.5 feet (76 cm) long, including its foot-long, hairless, prehensile (grasping) tail. This opossum is about the size of a cat. It has a clawless, opposable thumb on each hind foot. The Pouch : The young are about the size of a bee when they are born. Females have a fur-lined pouch on their abdomen into which these tiny, under-developed young crawl. The young live and drink milk from teats in the pouch for about 2 months. Diet : The Virginia Opossum is an omnivore (eating both plants and animals). It eats insects, lizards

Did You Know? Opossums Eat:
Roof Rats
Snails
Cockroaches
Welcome to the opossum care page of Willa's Ark. Opossums are the only marsupial which lives in North America, a mammal which gives birth to her young at the embryonic stage. The babies find their way to a small pouch where they mature, like a kangaroo. They have opposable thumbs on their hind legs, and a prehensile tail to help them climb and keep their balance. And no, they do NOT hang by their tails!
They have existed on this earth for 70 million years. Opossums roamed the earth during the Jurassic period, along with the tyrannosaurus rex. After 70 million years, opossums have undergone very little evolutionary changes. They are essentially immune to rabies, more than any other mammal. Opossums are very useful animals to have in your neighborhood. They love to eat snails, slugs, and insects such as cockroaches and beetles, and even catch and eat roof rats. Opossums also like to eat carrion, helping to maintain a clean and healthy environment. They are very smart, ranking above dogs in IQ, and closer to pigs. Opossums have verymean and intimidating teeth, but their main method of defense is to appear that they are scary. If they are cornered to the point where they think they cannot get away, they will "play dead".

About Us Field Projects How You Can Help Publications ... Opossums Opossums
Didelphis virginiana ) is the only marsupial found north of Mexico. Marsupials are distinguished by their unique mode of reproduction: The young are born in an almost embryonic form and make their way to the pouch in their mother's abdomen, where they are nourished for what in other mammals would be most of the gestational period. Opossums are omnivorous and consume an amazing variety of plant and animal foods. Invertebrates, such as insects, slugs, snails, and worms, can comprise a large part of their diet, and they're not above scavenging carrion. Contrary to popular folklore, opossums very rarely raid garbage cans, poultry coops, or gardens. They are most active at night, and they have a habit of ceaselessly moving along the ground in search of food, without following trails or travel routes to places of known food sources. In fact, adult male opossums may wander continuously. Females spend their lives in more defined areas, but still move around almost randomly. Most opossums seen in yards and neighborhoods are likely to move on without human encouragement or intervention if given enough time. Problems and Solutions Opossums are undoubtedly more beneficial to humans as consumers of undesirable insects, snails, and slugs than they are harmful to people for any damage they cause. If you see an opossum in your yard and wonder what, if anything, you should do, the best reaction is patience. The animal will likely move on in short order and should not be a threat or concern. Where an opossum is known to den under a porch or patio, the eviction strategy is much the same as for skunks (click on "Solving Problems with Skunks" below). While it is unlikely that they'll plunder your garden or trash cans, the most effective methods for discouraging visits by opossums or other urban wildlife are to secure trash containers with tight-fitting lids, secure pet doors at night, and pick up food bowls at night if pets have been fed outdoors.

Sounds are so unbearable and loud to dogs, cats and other territorial creatures (but most humans can't even hear them) that the pests modify their habitual routes and avoid the YardGard zone. YardGard's specific sound pitches and patterns are constantly changing so that pests cannot grow accustomed to any constant sound environment. Keep messy dogs off your lawn YardGard Complete

Opossum
Didelphis virginiana These underappreciated mammals are the only marsupials found in the United States. They are nocturnal (active at night) and are very common within Baltimore City's limits, as well as its suburbs. Opossums are slow, non-aggressive foragers. They are omnivorous, feeding on berries, worms, insects, bird eggs and human leftovers. Females carry their young in a pouch until they are too large to fit inside. At this age, the young ride on their mother's back, clinging to her fur. Opossums climb well and may enter basements or take up residence under a deck or porch. When opossums reside in a crawlspace or basements they can be quite messy. Accumulated feces and fleas can present a hazard to humans or pets. They are not aggressive and usually freeze when frightened giving them the appearance of being dead and leading to the old saying, "playing oposuum." Back to Top

Opossums The Virginia opossum is the only opossum ( Didelphidae ) and the only marsupial in North America. Female marsupials have an external abdominal pouch. The Virginia Opossum Didelphis virginiana , is found in areas with trees, including large cities, throughout Florida. Color varies widely from almost white to almost black, though most commonly it is gray. It has a long (11-14"), hairless, prehensile tail. It has a pointed pink nose, prominent whiskers, and small, black, hairless ears with white tips. It has opposable thumbs on its hind feet. Overall body length is 27-33". The opossum has a slow, ambling gait, yet is an excellent climber. It forages both on the ground and in the trees, primarily at night. It is omnivorous and opportunistic, eating frogs, mice, rattlesnakes (it's immune to pit viper venom), fish, worms, insects, eggs, fruits, nuts, and seeds. Food plants include cedars persimmons grapes mulberries ... tupelos , and pawpaws Opossums have two litters each year, breeding from December through midsummer. The gestation period is only 13 days. A litter of 18-25 is born but because there are only 13 teats in the pouch, no more than 13 can survive. The actual number leaving the pouch at 70-80 days old is usually 6 or 7. Once the young do leave the pouch, they hang onto the mother's back or tail. They move on when they are about 4 months old. The opossum is shy and solitary. When threatened it will often hiss or growl, but will rarely attack. It may "play possum", going limp and appearing to be dead.

IMPORTANT SALE NOTICE!! Dear visitor,
I have loved and cared for my opossums for 13 years, it was a very rewarding hobby. These little critters have brought me tremendous joy and have enriched my life. As the original breeder, I feel blessed that I had the opportunity to introduce these amazing animals to other animal lovers, to breed my color varieties, and write my opossum care book. But it's time to move on: I have established the Aroma Science Institute where I teach aromatherapy courses, provide health consultations, and develop products - please visit aromascience.net Since my institute is taking up all my time and effort, my opossum business is now for sale! I will be happy to consider offers and inquiries from serious, caring individuals. Please contact me at nporan@aol.com

The opossum has unique characteristics that make it an interesting animal to study and rehabilitate. The Virginia opossum is a cat-sized mammal (25-40 inches long, 8-13 pounds). It has short black and white underfur covered by white, coarse guard hair. The coloring is white around the face and mottled white and black around the body and legs.
