Orchid Culture
Doreen Garner is an obsessed orchid grower. 'It's just like a disease,' she says. 'It grows and it grows...unless you're a dedicated person, I suggest you don't start.' Malcolm, concerned, asks if there is any cure for her obsession. 'Yes,' jokes Doreen, 'We have death coming along.'
Doreen started growing orchids 22 years ago. 'My husband was sick one day and I bought a Phalaenopsis that I thought that would liven him up a bit. I was very proud of it and I thought, as I sat on the train, "I hope everyone looks at my plant." He was thrilled with it and I still have that plant to this day.' The Phalaenopsis started off Doreen's collection of orchids that grow well in cool conditions. Because many orchids would get marked by cold winter rain, those destined for exhibition display are brought into an unheated poly-house when they're in bud.
Comprising about 1500 species, the Dendrobium genus occurs across a vast region from NZ, up Australia's east coast, through the islands to the north. Although they occur mostly as epiphytes - that is, growing on the bark of trees - in humid and sub-humid regions, they can be grown cold in climates such as Perth, Adelaide and Melbourne. Some Dendrobiums only grow in the tropics, but there is no shortage to choose from for orchid-lovers in the southern part of the continent. According to Doreen, 'Australian natives such as

Cooktown Orchid
At the Queensland Herbarium at the Brisbane Botanic Gardens at Mt Coot-tha, Colin finds a specimen of the Queensland State floral emblem, the Cooktown Orchid (Dendrobium bigibbum var. phalaenopsis ). One of many specimens held at the herbarium, it was collected at Muddy Bay on Cape York in Far North Queensland in 1994. The variety naturally occurs on the eastern side of Cape York, where Cooktown is the major regional centre, although commercial collection has made it rare in this area.
The Cooktown Orchid is one of the most widely grown of the orchid species. Although not recognised as the Queensland floral emblem until 1959, the plant has excited the interest of botanists and writers since the second half of the 19th century. In 1882 a delicately drawn and coloured illustration was included in Australian Orchids by Robert Fitzgerald, the Surveyor General of NSW, which is in the herbarium's extensive library.
Plants grow up to 80cm in height, many of the cultivated specimens having much larger flowers than the original species. The petals come in varying shades of purple through to almost white, the base of the labellum being a much darker shade of purple. The flowers are carried on canes 10-40cm long, usually in the dry season in the wild, but sometimes year-round in cultivation.
Commercial growers use seeds sown in agar for the propagation of these orchids but for the home gardener this could be a little bit difficult. Division of pseudo-bulbs in spring or summer is usually the best method of propagating for home gardeners. However, this reduces the plant's flowering for the following season.

Many states have County Cooperative Extension Services that will make identifications at no cost or for a nominal fee. They are often listed under the name of your county in the white pages of the telephone directory. If there is none near you, an alternative is to mail the infected orchid to the central extension office in your state (see attached list). Each of these offices can direct orchidists to a County Cooperative Extension Office.
If it is necessary to mail a sample for examination, ask for packing and mailing instructions to the symptoms will not be altered during shipping. Paper is recommended. Avoid plastic, which often causes plant tissue to rot during transit.

Today most garden centers and nurseries offer at least a few varieties of orchids. They're the perfect winter flowers because they bloom so long. But while many growers are committed to producing enough to keep up with the public's demand for orchids, others are more interested in conservation. Terry Root at The Orchid Zone takes conservation of orchids seriously. He maintains thousands of varieties of which several dozen are endangered. While growing orchids is his business and his love, he is also committed to protecting them. Terry Root, The Orchid Zone, Salinas, CA: There's about 3500 species of orchids that we know about. And no telling how many haven't been discovered yet. The greatest threat to orchids is habitat destruction. We grow some here that we believe are probably extinct in nature. If it weren't for operations like this, they would no longer exist at all. We perpetuate the orchids by making a selection of the traits we want to perpetuate. We make the pollination and the seed develops on the plant over a period of a year and we take it to a laboratory and put it in a sterile bottle of agar. After a few months and it germinates, we transfer it to another flask where it has more space to develop and after about a year in there, it comes out and it's a greenhouse plant.

More and more people are growing orchids because they are more readily available and the price has come down. They're actually very good value if you're looking for a splash of color in your home. I'm going to put together a living flower arrangement that will actually last a month or more. The orchids will be center stage, but to pull this off, I'm going to have to have a support cast of other houseplants. So I'll use a few ivies and prayer plants because they're as durable as the orchids themselves. Putting together an arrangement is really simple, all you need besides the plants themselves is a container to put them in, some moss, a few sandwich bags and rubber bands. Now the reason I chose these plants is because of their form. The orchids will be tall and spiky in the center of the arrangement. I chose a prayer plant because it has a broad leaf and there is a little bit of purple veining in it that picks up the color in the orchid. Ivy, with its long runners, will cascade gracefully over the edge of the containers. Now since the orchids were a little more expensive, I'm going to keep them in the containers they were grown in and just place them in the center. Since the orchids will take up the majority of the room in the container, I'm going to put the other plants in sandwich bags which will give me the most flexibility as I put the arrangement together. Once the plants are in place, I fill in the open spaces with sheet moss.

Orchid Fever Examines a Horticultural Madness
A review of Eric Hansen's gripping book about what drives the modern growers and collectors of orchids
by Steve Silk
Orchid Fever: A Horticultural Tale of Love, Lust and Lunacy by Eric Hansen. 2000, Vintage Books, $13.00, paperback; 272 pp. Just when I was thinking my obsession with gardening couldn't get any more compulsive, along comes Eric Hansen to show me that, in relative terms, I have a long, long way to go. But those orchid people! It seems their passion for plants is exceeded only by the profundity of their eccentricity, as this cast of unforgettable characters easily proves. They live in a whole other world, and what a story they have to tell!
It's all here: orchid hunters tumbling out of trees in Borneo; a gun-toting, pesticide-poisoned aficionado who regularly shoots at the walls of his Paris apartment; and a motley lot of growers, flower-show competitors, and other orchid obsessives perched precariously on the very edge of sanity. Though Hansen never pinpoints the source of orchid fever, he's darned good at describing the symptoms. Hansen's research also uncovered an abundance of fascinating but obscure and sometimes erotic orchid lore that underscores the inventiveness of the plant kingdom. At times, the book verges on a diatribe against the global reach of the
