Oregon State Archives
503/373-0701 x 239 State Archives Exhibit Recounts Indian Boarding School Experience Salem The Oregon State Archives, located at 800 Summer Street NE in Salem, will host the exhibit "They Sacrificed for Our Survival: The Indian Boarding School Experience," from April 14 to May 8, 2000. "I am pleased that the State Archives will display information about this important, yet often unmentioned, chapter in Oregon history," said Secretary of State Bill Bradbury, whose agency includes the State Archives. "It is not a chapter we can be proud of, but one which we should not forget." Federal Indian policy makers in the late 1800s and early 1900s sought to use the schoolhouse specifically the boarding school as an instrument for acculturating Indian youth to "American" ways of thinking and living. Only by removing Indian children from their homes for extended periods of time, policy makers reasoned, could white "civilization" take root while childhood memories of "savagism" gradually faded to the point of extinction. The attempted eradication of Indian cultures is still a source of pain for many American Indians. This exhibit introduces a subject little known outside American Indian communities. The exhibit includes stories of Indian boarding school survivors told in the oral tradition of their ancestors and through historical photographs and student artwork dating from the late 1800s through the 1950s. The photographs illustrate several of the large, off-reservation federal schools – Carlisle in Pennsylvania, Chilocco in Oklahoma, and Chemawa in Oregon – as well as mission schools in Washington and Idaho. Exhibit materials are part of the Estelle Reel Collection at Cheney Cowles Museum in Spokane, Washington.

i'm leaving tha' town
by Jessica Kaulanaikopokii Patty
Jessica, 14, is a freshman at Unity High in Oakland.
March 1, 2003
I'm leaving Oakland to attend a Native American boarding school in Oregon. Oakland is where I grew up, where I live and where I go to school, but it's depressing to stay out here. Oakland is a place of violence. Last June, my cousin, some friends and I were all sitting out on the porch at my cousin’s house in the “dubbs,” which spans the blocks from 20th to 29th Avenue. We were all kickin' it, high and drunk. Then this black car drove by and shot at me. My cousin blocked me and a bullet hit her in the head. I found out later that these two Mexican girls who aren’t from my turf (X3, Surreno) told their people to shoot me after we got in a fight at school. We called the ambulance, but it took so long to get there that we just drove to the hospital. The whole car was filled with blood. When we got there they didn’t want to help my cousin because she was wearing too much red. I started screaming, “F***ing help her!” They finally took her to the emergency room. Ten minutes later, they came out and said she was dead. Ever since my cousin’s funeral, my life has changed. I am now doing positive things instead of getting into fights all the time. I got involved in a youth fellowship program where we go on field trips and learn about Native American and African American culture, I joined Native American youth organizations like Seventh Native American Generation (SNAG) Magazine, and an after-school anger management program at the Native American Health Center.

American Indian boarding schools: 'That hurt never goes away'

WAHPETON, N.D. (AP) It was the beating she didn't get that still haunts Joyce Burr.
She and several friends were hiding from a dormitory matron in the coat room of the Wahpeton Indian School. They peeked from behind the coats as the enraged matron, herself an Indian, caught up with an older Chippewa girl named Judy Karvonen.
"That's the worst beating I've ever seen. That woman used coat hangers and everything on her," said Burr, a Turtle Mountain Chippewa/Oglala Sioux. "You can imagine not trying to move, trying not to make a sound, when you're seeing that."

SALEM, Ore. (AP) Two monuments sit on a grassy knoll at the Chemawa Indian School.
One carries the names of two former students who died in an alcohol-related car crash in 1996. The other, a granite marker, memorializes four former students who died in the 1997 crash of a stolen pickup truck.
Other areas of the campus are marred by the scrawls of graffiti, but the monuments are clean. Scattered around them are the offerings of grieving students. A few votive candles, forlorn in the Oregon mist. Some grimy coins. A handful of withering wildflowers. Several purple plastic packages of Jolly Rancher jellybeans.
For those who work here, it's a reminder of what happens to the students the cash-strapped Indian boarding school cannot reach.

Yes, private schools are still generally safer, more academically rigorous and claim with some justification to provide better preparation for life in the Ivy League. The difference is that, at least in boarding schools, life has gotten, well, more colorful.
Foxcroft is a small all-girl's boarding school in Middleburg, Virgnia.
"Boarding schools are perceived to be attended by blue-blooded New England types," says Anthony J. DeFazio, publicist for the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS). "The reality is, since the mid-1980s, international students and students of other ethnic backgrounds have made big gains in boarding schools."
NAIS statistics for 1996, the latest available year, put non-White enrollment at about 21% of the total boarding school populations. The trend is clear, according to Heather Loerle, Associate Director for the Association of Boarding Schools, a NAIS affiliate. In the current economic situation, "If anything grows a few percentage points, you start taking notice," says Hoerle.
