Sports Our goal is to provide athletic opportunity for every student who has the desire to compete, and to help those individuals achieve their potential. CCA fields teams in cross country, volleyball, basketball, cheerleading and track, and is a member of the 280-school Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA). In past seasons, individuals and teams have won numerous league, district, and state honors. CCA's impressive collection of trophies stretches back to the 1952 boys' basketball team. More than 30 state trophies and well over 100 total trophies are housed in the newly-constructed trophy cases built by alumni. CROSS COUNTRY CCA teams have set an Oregon high school record for any classification, any gender, in numbers of trips to State: 21 consecutive trips from 1962-1982. CCA is currently ranked #1 (Class 2A/1A) boys' cross country in Oregon since the inception of the sport in 1973 in an objective ranking by "Who's Who in Oregon Track."

The Christian Science Monitor Tuesday, April 2, 2002 Lesson No. 1: Shed your Indian identity By Tim Vanderpool
Special to The Christian Science Monitor W hether toddlers or teens, they were taken from home and shipped thousands of miles to dreary barracks. Their hair was cut, they were given new names, and each was assigned a number.
The United States government began this brutal attempt at social engineering in 1879. Breaking rebellious Indians by indoctrinating their children in Anglo ways was considered a cost-effective alternative to war. But the personal cost to native Americans was incalculable.
“Remembering Our Indian School Days: The Boarding School Experience,” an exhibit at the Heard Museum in Phoenix, examines this dark chapter of American history. Exhibits and books about native American boarding schools give the public “some clue about where we’ve been, and that we’re now really making a massive attempt to participate in American academic life,” says Elizabeth Cook-Lynn of South Dakota’s Crow-Creek Reservation, author of “Anti-Indianism in Modern America.”
The Heard, nationally renowned for its indigenous art and artifact collections, considers this to be the most comprehensive exhibition ever offered about the boarding schools.

SEATTLE — Known to many Americans and Canadians for their shaved heads, saffron robes and solicitations on street corners and in airports, the Hare Krishnas were mainstays of the Flower Child generation of the 1960s and '70s. More than three decades later, dozens of young adults have come forward with chilling allegations of systematic abuse by teachers and caretakers at Hare Krishna boarding schools across North America. The alleged abuse is now the subject of a landmark $400 million lawsuit filed in Dallas, Texas. Plaintiffs include scores of former students; defendants include the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) and dozens of former teachers and officials at now-closed boarding schools in cities including Seattle and Vancouver, British Columbia. If successful, the lawsuit could strip ISKCON of most or all of its North American assets.

Oregon History- Uncle Sam's Handiwork next
Statehood meant that Oregonians had two senators and a representative to make their case in Congress. The congressional delegation delivered. Some argued it was critical to open communications across the new state. The Republican Party was not of a mind to continue projects wholly in the control and labor of federal employees. Its philosophy was to throw as much action as possible into the private sector. Thus between 1865 and 1869 Congress liberally awarded land grants to the state of Oregon to pass on to companies constructing "military wagon roads." Theoretically the routes were to link strategic locations suitable for use by troops during emergencies. The new roads were the Oregon Central, Corvallis-Yaquina Bay, Willamette Valley and Cascade Mountain, The Dalles-Boise, and the Coos Bay. Two provided routes from Willamette Valley points in Albany and Springfield eastward to Boise. A third connected The Dalles via the John Day watershed to Boise. Two ran toward the coast: one from Albany to Yaquina City and another from Roseburg to Coos Bay. Under the terms of the grants, as soon as a company had completed a stretch of road, it could apply to the governor for certification of its success. The governor or his designated official would visit the route. If the road was deemed suitable for wagon use, the company then received three square miles of land for every mile of road. The tally for the five roads ran into millions of acres.

A brief summary of Indian history, in particular Indian education, is presented as the context for many of the changes that occurred at Chemawa during its first one hundred years. The purpose of this study is to examine Chemawa alumni recollections of Chemawa within an imposed educational system. My research process included library and archival research, academic classes and personal interviews. I interviewed alumni who had attended Chemawa between 1917 and 1985. Themes such as academics, vocational training, social life and general impressions of Chemawa are categorized in the different eras and serve as the body of the thesis.

Native American past chronicled An Exhibit explores the history of government-run boarding schools through displays and panels By Ben Romano
Oregon Daily Emerald

The experience of Native American children who were forced to leave their homes and families, abandon their cultures and required to attend government boarding schools is chronicled in "They Sacrificed For Our Survival," a temporary exhibit at the University Natural History Museum. "There are a lot of interesting angles to this exhibit," said Eliza Schmidkunz, museum publicist. The exhibit will be on display through Dec. 23. Photographs and testimonials describe the federal boarding schools. It was the mission of the schools to "civilize" Native Americans. This topic will be explored further during a speech and panel discussion by Tsianina Lomawaima, University of Arizona Native American Studies professor and author of a book on Oklahoma's Chilocco Indian School, which her father attended. Lomawaima's visit is sponsored by the Oregon Humanities Center as the 1999-2000 Cressman Lecturer, an annual lectureship dedicated to humanities issues.

Canku Ota (Many Paths) An Online Newsletter Celebrating Native America January 11, 2003 - Issue 78 Nike Donates $50,000 to Install Track at Native American School by Danielle Johnson, Nike, Inc. credits: Indian Reservations haven't been known for their exceptional athletic facilities, in fact, with most of the education budget cuts the athletic facilities have been last to be funded. Nike hopes to reverse that trend by donating $50,000 to help refurbish Sequoyah High School's running track in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, the capital of the Cherokee Nation. Sequoyah High School was started by the Cherokee Nation for Cherokee orphans of the Civil War in 1872. With the rising risk of diabetes within the Native American community, physical education is a top priority. Diabetes has reached epidemic proportions among Native Americans. Prevalence of type-2 diabetes among Native Americans in the U.S. is 12.2 percent for those over 19 years of age, with an 80-percent increase in type-2 diabetes in children and young adults. On November 22, 2002 Nike joined the Cherokee tribal leaders, school administrators and community members in dedicating the new track and field. Sequoyah High School is the first Native American school to be awarded Bowerman grant funds. The new equipment will be a resource for the students of the high school, local feeder schools, an elementary school and the entire surrounding community.
