of Marguariete Overholser T he village of New Pine Creek was established before 1876 and is the oldest community in Lake County. The local stream is Pine Creek, but the postal authorities required that it be named New Pine Creek. The New Pine Creek Church was a few feet north of the Oregon-California state line. Construction of the building was the work of John and Nancy Jane (Bowring) Sutherland about 1886. John's historical profile There was both a Baptist Church building and a Christian Church building on Church Street. The Baptist building was less than a block from present-day 395 and the Christian Church building was further east, near the hillside. We are unable to say for certain that the building shown is the Christian Church. John Sutherlin was a gospel preacher from Missouri who had come to New Pine Creek following a brief stay near Alturas in Northern California. They had crossed the plains in 1872.

A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY INTRODUCTION
2 Heroes page
HISTORICAL SKETCH
Before the arrival of western religions Native Americans in the Pacific Northwest certainly had a rich spiritual life which included sacred objects and places sustaining their various civilizations. However, as their lands were in time colonized largely by white men and women, the new settlers' religion and their related buildings began to appear with increasing frequency.
At the end of the 19th century you could distinguish between these rural churches and those of the large urban centers which had by then developed. The urban churches were supported by large congregations with comparatively larger resources than those of the rural areas. These urban churches were built by professional builders and architects, employing skilled craftsmen, also professionals. They were maintained and preserved by persons employed for that purpose.
On the other hand, the rural churches were more of a hands-on community effort. Often a group would join to gather the lumber and other materials needed and would contribute their labor to the project. In some instances the townspeople had to make the necessary tools themselves before they could proceed. This was especially true among the early missionaries, such as Fr. Ravalli, a skilled engineer, who devised the tools, pulleys and makeshift cranes needed to gather and transport timber, and created the sawmill to cut it and plane it. For these groups of nonprofessionals inspiration and community cohesion had to be supplied. Rev. Nevius, who built 36 churches in 40 years, was the prototype of the leader who could elicit these qualities.

A Photographic Project About
19th Century Churches in the Pacific Northwest

How strange it was when I started to photograph and gather data about these old churches that Religious Vision in a New Land became the happiest project I had worked on till then or since. While I am not especially religious, these old churches were to become a focal point in my mind for considering questions of spirituality and community.
This website is where I am recording what this project was, presenting some of the photographs and gathering the bits of information and history that came my way in the course of it, largely through the generosity of those willing to share their information with me. I hope these photographs and text will have the same effect on you that this project had for me.
I knew I had to become more systematic. I decided on a time cut off of 1899 and to expand the area covered to the Pacific Northwest (Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Montana). Knowing that it could be accomplished only when I was free of other obligations, I decided initially that I would give the project at least 5 years.

To contact us: Phone: 503-228-8394 Fax: 503-223-6747 Email: abco@vibrant-life.net Home The American Baptist Churches of Oregon represents 55 congregations and over ten thousand members who affiliate with the American Baptist Churches-USA.  We represent the full diversity of people living in Oregon.  We live in cities, suburbs, small towns  and rural areas. Our churches are ethnically diverse — Anglo, African American, Inter-racial, Hispanic, and Asian — and are all committed to the unique witness of the Gospel we share as American Baptists. Dr. Wm. Wayne Brown, Executive Minister, has created a vision for ABC Oregon and is supporting Oregon Baptist leaders in growing this vision into a new style of life and work.  He centers his vision around “Vibrant Life.” To ensure ABC Oregon is alive and vibrant, it must grow spiritually, professionally and physically — for growth is evidence of life. “Vibrant Life — Planting the seeds of opportunity for Oregon Baptists to seek, find, and grow the Will of God.”
