Web-based In early 2001, we asked the State Archivists to tell us what educational programs their agencies and state historical records advisory boards (SHRABs) had in place for a variety of audiences. Please note: The information in the table below was gathered through the broad question "What is your state archives/SHRAB doing in the following education areas?" Accordingly, this is not intended as an all-encompassing summary of what the respondent states are doing, but rather, a sampling of the types of educational activities being undertaken at this time. Educational Programs for State Government Employees Summary: Of the thirty-three states included in this category, twenty-nine responded that they provide regular workshops and/or daily training for state records managers (six provide both). Only nine of the states indicated that they have manuals or retention schedules (CT, ME, MO, MI, OR, PA, SC, TX, WY), six of them are available on-line. Michigan and South Carolina have outside funding for state records education (NHPRC). Oregon is the only state providing Web-based training for state government at this time. States and Territories

Last updated September 22, 2001 Intro State Agencies Local Govts Professional Archivists K-12 Teachers/Students ... Web-based In early 2001, we asked the State Archivists to tell us what educational programs their agencies and state historical records advisory boards (SHRABs) had in place for a variety of audiences. To date, we've heard from 32 states. Please note: The information in these tables was gathered through the broad question "What is your state archives and/or SHRAB doing in the following education areas?" Accordingly, this is not intended as an all-encompassing summary of what the respondent states are doing, but rather, a sampling of the types of educational activities being undertaken at this time.
  • Programs for professional archivists
Eighteen of the 32 states responding to the survey offer basic workshops to other professional archivists in their area. Eleven of them also offer some advanced training, either workshops, college courses, or archival institutes. This is distinct from the training that is provided to the staffs of the respondents. Fifteen states indicated that they support staff to attend basic workshops and regional meeting; seven provide attendance at Modern Archives Institute, or equivalent in-depth training, and one (MO) indicated tuition reimbursement for staff. (IL indicated that tuition reimbursement has been promised, but has never yet materialized.) Eight of the states included extensive cooperative efforts/partnerships with others, including universities (NE), archival and allied professional associations (NV, NH, NC, PA, SC, WY), and other states (UT).

After the first European study tours in 1998 and 1999, Advocates determined that encouraging teams of four or more people from a single state to participate in the study tours would be the most effective way to build support for Rights. Respect. Responsibility. (3Rs). Since then, teams that participated in study tours have been working energetically in California and Oregon. In fact, Planned Parenthood of Southwestern Oregon and the California team are Advocates' first state-based partners in the 3Rs Campaign California Adapting the 3Rs to a state environment was a major goal of Advocates' 2000 European study tour. Under a two-year grant from The California Wellness Foundation, Advocates hosted four California policy experts on the tour: Carmen Narvarez, Vice President for External Relations for the Public Health Institute; Beatrice Olivera Stotzer, Chief Executive Officer of New Capital; Cathryn Rivera, Deputy Secretary for Cabinet Affairs; Winna Davis, Director of Programs for the City of San Francisco Department of Children, Youth and Families. California presents an unusual policy climate. California's public schools are not required to teach sex education; however, if schools provide sex education, they must stress abstinence

We are very excited to have Partnerships in Community Living (PCL), based in Monmouth, Oregon, join our contingent of agencies who are hosting Fellows in the field of developmental disabilities. After hearing about ILEX from an Oregonian colleague who had been at a conference in Texas and who had heard a presentation by a Massachusetts agency director and ILEX Fellow . . . yes, you heard it right . . . Oregon via Massachusetts via Texas . . . we got a call from PCL inquiring about the program. On investigation, it was clear to us that PCL is an agency with a long track record of progressive, thoughtful, and quality support services for adults with developmental disabilities and is genuinely interested in the concept and goal of exchange.
