The oregon geography provides concealment for clandestine methamphetaminelabs, smuggling activities, and marijuana growing operations.
http://www.whitehousedrugpolicy.gov/hidta/or-content.html
Oregon HIDTA Map: Oregon Mission Statement: The mission of the Oregon HIDTA is to significantly contribute to the National Drug Control Strategy efforts to reduce illegal drug use by 10% in the next two years and 25% in the next five years. To accomplish the Mission of the Oregon HIDTA, the Executive Board will leverage, allocate, and focus the available, "Value Added", HIDTA resources on federal, state, and local multi-agency law enforcement initiatives that have a direct relationship to: (A). Modifying individual behavior in order to discourage drug use and addiction, and (B). Disrupting the market for illegal drugs by dismantling the drug networks that transport and distribute drugs and illicit proceeds from their sale. Initiatives include, but are not limited to, investigation, intelligence, investigative support, interdiction, prosecution, and money laundering.
General Information: Year of Designation: Geographic Area of Responsibility: Oregon: Clackamus, Deschutes, Douglas, Jackson, Marion, Multnomah, and Washington counties Contact:
Threat Abstract:
The greatest drug threat to Oregon citizens and visitors to Oregon continues to be a steady increase in demand, usage, and addiction levels fostered by an attitude of tolerance and pro-legalization by special interest groups. Criminal drug trafficking organizations are encouraged in this political environment. Criminal drug trafficking organizations, both foreign and local, represent the most serious supply and distribution sources in Oregon. These groups either manufacture, transport, and/or distribute large quantities of methamphetamine, black tar heroin, cocaine, marijuana, and designer drugs such as ecstasy (MDMA) in Oregon.

Geography and Climate

Major geological differences divide the state into three distinct bands running north and south. The coastal region consists of a narrow band of headlands, rainforests and bird-flocked estuaries. Bordered on the west by the sea and on the east by the Coast Range mountains, it is an area of high, surf-battered cliffs fragrant with the smell of cedar, rain-drenched firs and sea salt. The Willamette Valley hosts the eastern wall of the Coast Range and the western wall of the Cascade Mountains. Snow-fed streams flow down from theses ranges to form the river for which the valley is named. It is a place of rolling prairies containing some of the richest soil on earth.

John Richards, Chair
Professors: Claude W. Curran, John W. Mairs, Susan P. Reynolds Associate Professor: John B. Richards Assistant Professor : Patricia J. Acklin, Gregory V. Jones Adjunct Faculty: Gene E. Martin The study of geography fosters an understanding of the relationship between human activities and the physical environment on global, regional, and local scales. Geography draws upon natural and social science concepts and acts as a bridge between the sciences. Fundamental geographic methodology asks: What is it? Where is it? Why is it there? The geography major explores subjects as varied as mid-latitude weather phenomena, the mosaic of human settlement in Africa, regional voting patterns in the United States, and the depletion of natural resources in developing countries. The specific goals of the geography program are to: 1. Prepare students in geographic methodology by encouraging thinking in a spatial context and asking students to observe, develop hypotheses, analyze, and explain physical and cultural landscapes at various scales.
