Abbreviation:
OR The origin of the state's name is unknown, but one theory holds that it may have come from the Wisconsin River, shown in a 1715 French map as "Ouaricon." In 1859, Oregon was admitted as the 33rd state to the Union. Spanish sailors in search of a northwest passage were the first Europeans to see what is known today as Oregon. Settlers traveling in wagon trains over the Oregon Trail in the 1840s followed the missionaries who had come in the 1830s. Oregon is a state of great natural beauty with places such as Crater Lake National Park and the Columbia River Gorge. Oregon is known for its vast evergreen forests and i ts mountains, covered in forests, make Oregon the leading state in the production of wood products.

Pullman Kids: Geography: U.S.A.: Oregon contains pictures and descriptions of the state of Oregon which is just south of Washington state on the Pacific coast of the U.S.A.. In August 2000 we went to a Bluegrass Festival in northern Oregon in a small town called Clatskanie that the locals all seem to pronounce Clatskanine for some unknown reason. It rained for the majority of the weekend which is not great when you are camping in tents. Scouts Canada sells a badge that reads, "Don't complain, camp in the rain." I think we've earned that one now. It took three hours to dry everything off when the sun finally came out. We then drove south through Portland which is all raised highways crisscrossing every which way. We stayed in Silverton near Salem and hiked the two hour loop through the Silver Falls State Park. There are ten waterfalls in the park. To see all of them would have taken five hours. We saw three. The first one was quite incredible as you could walk all the way behind it. Then we drove south to Eugene and then directly west to the Pacific coast. The Automobile Association guide was helpful. A mile south of Florence are the Sand Dunes. We took a one hour ride over them. The driver tried to make it scary by stopping at the sides of cliffs and then tearing down the huge hill at the end. It was very exciting. We had to play miniature golf before going because there is a long wait because of the crowds.

History ... Suggested Reading List Divided by the Cascade Mountain range, Oregon is a land of contrasts. Western Oregon is characterized by a mild marine climate, while the eastern part of the state is high-desert country. Despite the claim that "Portlanders don't tan, they rust," the average annual total rainfall is only 37 inches (93.98 cm). Most of the rain falls between October and April, heavy rainfall is rare, and the sun really does shine frequently. Average temperatures range from highs of 80 degrees (26.6 c) degrees in mid-summer to lows of 33 degrees (.55 c) degrees in January. Snow is rare. The Portland skyline is dominated by Mount Hood, which towers 11,240 feet above sea level. Pacific Ocean beaches are a short drive from Portland, and also from

    How to PASS GEO 407/507
The purpose of this course is to give you broader exposure to cutting-edge research in geography and related disciplines. One of the best ways to do this, of course, is to LISTEN . So in order to pass the course you need to attend at least 8 out of the 10 sessions . Always feel free to PARTICIPATE by asking questions of the speaker or offering comments. Another important part of "Geographic Research" is to "know thy speaker." Oftentimes in the "real world" of academia we challenge or inspire ourselves by reading the works of others who are publishing in a different part of our field, or in a different field altogether. We are especially prompted to do so if introduced to the person's work in a departmental seminar or at a conference. This may even lead us to a new direction of inquiry or a brand new research specialty. To give you a sense of this process, you will also need to the do the following in order to pass the course:
    • CHOOSE one talk that was particularly interesting to you (NOT including the graduate student talks on May 26th).

Dr. Speer is a dendrochronologist with experience in reconstructing environmental variables that affect tree growth, such as insect outbreaks, fire, masting, and climate. He is excited about the many uses and more widespread applications of dendrochronology. He is presently developing tree-ring chronologies in the tropics where previously researchers had thought that annual rings did not form. He has developed the first insect outbreak reconstructions on pandora moth, a frequent defoliator of western pine forests and he has developed new methods that enable dendrochronologists to use tree rings to reconstruct past fruiting in oak trees. Geography:
Southern Oregon is divided into three main river basins; the Umpqua River, the Rogue River, and the Klamath Basin. The Umpqua meets the Pacific at Reedsport, the Rogue mouth is near Gold Beach, and the Klamath empties at the Redwoods National Park in Northern California. All three rivers have their headwaters in the Cascade Mountains on the slopes of Crater Lake, Oregon's only national park.
The Siskiyou Mountains stretch between the Cascade Mountains and the Coast Range at the California border. The entire area is more vertical than most other parts of the state, which leads to numerous waterfalls, lots of whitewater rapids, and some spectacular scenery.
The coast is dominated by the Siskiyou mountains, which become the Coast Range as you go north. The dividing line between the Siskiyous and the Coast Range is usually placed at the middle fork of the Coquille River.

    Research Interests:
Nature-Society Relations : My principal interests lie at the intersection of natural resource use and economic processes, and central themes of my research include processes of globalization, regional economic development, and natural resource policy. My focus has been on industrial fisheries in the northern Pacific Ocean. I find the marine environment to be an exciting arena for research because of the variety of contemporary marine resource problems and conflicts, recent changes in the political economic geography of the oceans, and also because oceans offer a different lens through which to examine relationships that connect people and places. An area of special interest for me has been the ways that national and international policy concerning jurisd iction of the oceans and property rights has shaped regional development patterns, contributed to resource problems, and worked to tie regional fisheries into the global seafood industry. Reflecting concerns about the nature-society divide, my research also investigates the role of nature in economic geographies of fisheries and seafood.
