    Algebra Across The Wire
The UT TeleLearning Center (UTTLC) at the University of Texas at Austin delivers six high school classes by audioconferencing . The classes include Health Science Technology Education, TeleLanguage (Spanish and German), TeleRap (a roundtable discussion for teenagers), and a special migrant student program called Algebra Across the Wire. All courses are approved by the Texas Education Agency, count toward graduation, and fulfill Texas essential elements. Algebra Across the Wire is funded by a Texas Education Agency Migrant Student Program contract. Migrant students usually withdraw from schools, attend classes in various states, and then return to their original school. Unfortunately, this often results in partial credits that do not count toward graduation. Therefore, Algebra Across the Wire offers an alternative credit option to secondary migrant students as they travel or attend summer school. For more information about this program, contact: Darcy Walsh Hardy, Ph.D., Director, UT TeleLearning Center, The University of Texas at Austin, EIMC, P.O. Box 7700, Austin, 78713. Support for Nurses Working in Oregon's K-12 Schools
Researchers and clinicians report that health needs of Oregon's youth are increasing in number, complexity and severity. Increasing numbers of students in schools have health problems linked to low school achievement, poor self-esteem, and other factors which inhibit student success. More students need sophisticated mental health assessment and interventions. Many students have significant chronic, disabling, sometimes life-threatening conditions and have complex medical and treatment protocols. OHSU School of Nursing is working with local schools to promote the Public Health Model(PHM). The PHM focuses on health assessment, early intervention, health promotion, health counseling, and referral management of special health needs. These target school-wide or district-wide programs in Oregon. Another program that benifits Oregon's Schools is the School-based Health Centers, Primary Care Model (PCM). This is the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of minor acute illness and injuries. In addition with the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of mental health issues.

    K-12 Operating System Usage Survey
One of the interesting aspects of the Portland Linux/Unix Group's Linux in Schools Project is that we don't know much about what type of operating systems schools currently have on their networks. We know what the schools we personally deal with in the Portland, Oregon area are using, but what about the rest of the country? Since each school district seems to be on its own when it comes to technology decisions, we have been operating under the assumption that we should assume nothing! This survey was conducted in order to confirm or dispel this assumption. Please note: this survey was intended to give a general picture of operating system usage in schools, statistical accuracy was not a high priority.
    Survey Methodology
    Criteria Rational
    • Hosts were scanned from the internet using queso (see below)
Automated to minimize time requirements, required no financial expenditures Only hosts in k12..us domains were scanned (where is the abbreviation for the state; e.g. "or" for Oregon). WHAT'S AT STAKE IN K-12 SCHOOL TRANSFORMATION? Oregon is trying to achieve a world-class education system, with high academic standards, a new assessment system, and community-based learning opportunities to make academic learning more meaningful. We need a renewed commitment to this effort at all levels. In particular, we need to give schools adequate resources and then hold them accountable. Vision and Benchmarks
Oregon schools will be measurably the best in the nation and equal to any in the world.
    • Oregon students will score at the top of the world in math and
science. 95 percent of students will meet or exceed the standards established for the Certificate of Initial Mastery (CIM). Each student will make substantial gains in average test scores each year. (Every child will be challenged to learn at his or her full
      potential.)

    Oregon:
    Proficiency-Based Admissions Standards System
PASS is designed to accomplish three important goals: (1) to prepare more students to do college-level work successfully, (2) to enable students to make better choices concerning their academic program and subsequent careers, and (3) to decrease the time it takes them to graduate from college. As mentioned previously, Oregon is different from California and Wisconsin because of its recent efforts to create a seamless and aligned K-16 system of education. Following from the legislatively mandated benchmarks and standards in K-12 schools, higher education institutions are adopting a set of proficiency- based admission standards. In 1991 and 1995, two performance-based certificates, the Certificate of Initial Mastery (CIM) and the Certificate of Advanced Mastery (CAM), were authorized as the principal vehicles for improving student performance and redefining the K-12 curriculum. These certificates are to be awarded based on students' performance of skills, not grades and credits. Both the CIM and CAM focus on student achievement of high academic standards. Additionally, the CAM focuses on application in a career context and transition to post-high school settings. While much discussion took place in the early 1990s regarding standards and the two certificates of mastery, nothing specifically addressed how the standards would influence or affect the students' admission to institutions of higher education. To this end, the State Board of Higher Education (SBHE) and the State Board of Education (SBE), which governs K-12 schools and community colleges, began discussions about creating a "seamless" transition between systems for students. These discussions led to the creation of the Proficiency-Based Admission Standards System (PASS).

    58. Idea 2001: Oregon's Changing Economy
    4) oregon’s k12 schools, community colleges and the oregon State System ofHigher Education need to be the cornerstones of our efforts to compete
    http://www.oregonprogressforum.org/ideas/idea01_3.htm
Close this window to return to Timberline 2001 Ideas Page Send Feedback on this Idea Discuss this Idea FORUM IDEA: Oregon's Changing Economy Requires a New Response Progressive Principles: Oregon needs to compete effectively in the new “knowledge economy” in order to provide high-paying jobs and opportunity in Oregon for native Oregonians. Competition must involve identifying “centers of excellence” around which we build a concentration of those who are outstanding in abstract thought. We must provide the tools for developing innovative entrepreneurial effort from this abstract thought. Oregon needs to reduce its dependence on “extraction industries” – logging and mining while finding replacement jobs for those who will become unemployed because of this reduced dependence. Oregon must develop an export strategy for competing in the new global economy. This export strategy must focus on creating, and then exporting, goods of high value which are produced locally – not strictly the export of commodities. Oregon must link these export efforts to its centers of excellence in abstract thought. Oregon’s k-12 schools, community colleges and the Oregon State System of Higher Education need to be the cornerstones of our efforts to compete effectively in the knowledge economy, but without sacrificing the ability to provide a quality liberal arts education for all who desire one.
