Oregon Pioneer The Oregon Pioneer List (OPL) is a list of settlers to Oregon who migrated to or were born in Oregon prior to 1900 (included in the 1900 Oregon Census) and obtained from those sent (e-mailed) directly from individuals doing genealogical research. Note that the list is always under development . We will update the list every few weeks with any new data we can obtain. Please bear with us. Depending upon submissions we reserve the right to alter, amend or modify the chronological period of time covered by this list. We will try to get your submissions up as quickly as possible, but it may sometimes take us a while because of family work and other commitments. The Oregon Pioneer List (OPL) works much like a mailing list. Each entry in the OPL is given with a Contact. You can find each Contact identified in the Contacts file. Each Contact in the Contacts file is given with a minimum of an e-mail address. Send (e-mail) questions directly to the moderator:
Please do not send me lookup requests. I have a full time job and I work during the hours that the libraries are open. If you have lookup request please visit the web sites for the counties you are researching and utilize their lookup volunteers. Thank You.

Portland is a haven for libraries and librarians. Our city's population boasts one of the highest library card-carrying populations in the United States of America. Our state ranks fourth in the nation for 'per-person' circulation of library materials per year. Libraries and Resource Centers directly supporting the arts are located a short to moderate distance from the PNCA campus. Below are descriptions and links to our neighboring libraries. Multnomah County Libraries
Multnomah main branch provides many online databases, some videos, and a general public library collection. They also provide many services to their member patrons including the capacity for interlibrary loan. Dyna, their online catalog lists many neighborhood activities, and the capacity to search their entire county collection. Students can borrow materials at PAM if they are current Multnomah library cardholders. If FT BFA students live outside of the tricounty area the library PNCA library will arrange for borrowing rights. (0.7 miles distance) Oregon School of Arts and Crafts
The subjects of art craft are the realm of the Oregon College of Arts and Crafts with their related, but different educational mission. Students cannot borrow materials at PAM though the collection remains open for research. (6.71 miles distance)

The Gordon Russell Media Center is both the physical and academic hub of our school. It serves as a place for students to research, find interesting and engaging literature, and to access technology to link them to the increasing resources available to them over the internet. The media center has books, magazines, tapes, videos, maps, pictures, newspapers, and CD ROM resources, as well as two complete computer labs for students to use either as a part of a class or on an individual drop in basis.

33. GREAT SERVICE WITHOUT GREAT LIBRARIES
Compared to other states, oregon libraries have relatively modest levels of resources. Mostof Oregon's 125 public libraries are small or mediumsized.
http://library.willamette.edu/publications/movtyp/spring1996/scheppke.html
GREAT SERVICE WITHOUT "GREAT" LIBRARIES
By Jim Scheppke.
Oregon is rapidly developing into a great library state. Our citizens, increasingly, are enjoying some of the highest quality library services available anywhere. And, interestingly, we are able to deliver this high quality service without relying on "great" libraries. Compared to other states, Oregon libraries have relatively modest levels of resources. Only one academic library, the Knight Library at the University of Oregon, has a collection large enough to qualify them for membership in the Association of Research Libraries. Most of Oregon's 125 public libraries are small or medium-sized. The Multnomah County Central Library in downtown Portland, when it reopens after extensive renovations next year, will still be one of the smallest central libraries in any major U. S. city. Well, how do we do it, if we don't have the collections and buildings and large staffs that are common in other states? Cooperation is the biggest key to our success. In a state of mostly small and medium-sized libraries, we have had to learn to depend on each other to deliver the information our customers demand. We have been very effective in this. Our public libraries, collectively, rank first in the U. S. in obtaining interlibrary loans for their customers. In 1993, Oregon public libraries borrowed over 141 items for every 1,000 persons they served, more than four times the national average.

The Regional Library (Portland State University) will assume primary responsibilityfor the interlibrary loan of federal documents to other oregon libraries.
    http://www.lib.pdx.edu/resources/govdocs/stpln.html
REVISED STATE PLAN FOR FEDERAL DEPOSITORIES IN OREGON
    I. Introduction. In 1981 the GPO recommended that federal depositories develop State Plans to coordinate the federal documents depository program within each state. Severe budget constraints on all libraries compelled depositories to find ways to improve service while conserving funds, space and staff. As a way to meet the needs of the public in Oregon, it was decided at a Documents Interest Group of Oregon meeting that Oregon documents librarians would draw up a State Plan for Federal Depositories . The Regional and all Selective depositories would have to agree to and support the Plan for it to be effective. The State Supreme Court Library and the Federal Depository at the Bonneville Power Administration would not be obligated to adhere to the State Plan guidelines but would be encouraged to participate in the Plan as much as possible.
