COLLEGE OF FORESTRY
Forestry is important to the people of Oregon. Forty-nine percent of the state's 61.4 million acres is forest land, which supports Oregon's most important industry, forest resources. The forests provide wood, water, fish habitat, scenery, recreation, cultural sites, wildlife, rangeland, and other resources which contribute to the state's and region's economy and quality of life. Mission and Vision The mission of the College of Forestry, as part of Oregon’s Land, Sea, and Space Grant University, is to educate and engage the next generation of scholars, practitioners, and users of the world’s forest resources, to conduct distinctive problem-solving and fundamental research on the nature and use of forests and related resources, and to share our discoveries and knowledge with others. The Oregon State University College of Forestry combines the warmth of a small school with the rich resources of a comprehensive university. Our students experience a rigorous, demanding, hands-on, professional education. The educational environment is warm and supportive. College of Forestry students are a friendly, close-knit group. Professors teach their own classes and interact with students daily. They are caring and accessible—students and professors are on a first-name basis.

TO: Okemos Teachers
FROM: Elementary LMC Coordinators:
Sandy Voglesong-Fields and Lynne Griffin Welcome New Teachers ! Introduction : As elementary LMC coordinators and administrators of the Dynix Library System we have set aside one day a week for instruction in each of our buildings. The rest of the time is for the administrative duties required to keep our district’s libraries up and running smoothly. Sandy is responsible for Central, Hiawatha, and Wardcliff. Lynne is assigned to Bennett Woods, Cornell and Edgewood. We are looking forward to working with you this year! Instruction: The grade level goals and objectives of our library lessons are located on our library home page ( http://okemos.k12.mi.us ). We like to have one introduction lesson with first grade and kindergarten classes in the fall, and then we start our block of instruction with the fourth and fifth grade classes. Second and third grade instruction takes place in the winter and kindergarten and first grade resumes after spring break. Classroom teachers are asked to stay with the class and participate in the lessons since we are continually introducing new library software, Web sites, and materials in the LMC. This makes follow-up and reinforcement of the library skills possible. Interns are more than welcome to join the classroom teacher for these lessons.

New information from a CDC study may help school administrators in better planning and implementing violence prevention programs. In analyzing school-associated violent deaths since the beginning of the 1992 school year, CDC researchers found that student homicide rates are typically highest near the start of the fall and spring semesters. Student suicide rates were higher during the spring semester. Over the seven-year study, CDC confirmed 209 school-associated violent deaths. The latter equates to an average of 1 student homicide event every 7 school days, and 1 student suicide event every 31 school days. Additional violence prevention information is available on the home page of CDC's National Center for Injury Prevention and Control at:

    Press Release
Comprehensive school programs boost smoking prevention success among Oregon eighth graders A new study from the state of Oregon and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) showed that one year after schools were funded to implement CDC’s school tobacco prevention guidelines, students in these schools were about 20 percent less likely to smoke than students in non-funded schools. The Oregon Health Division found that between spring 1999 and spring 2000, smoking rates among eighth graders declined significantly more in a self-selected sample of funded schools (from 16.6 to 13 percent) than in a comparison group of non-funded schools (from 17 to 15.7 percent). In addition, among the funded schools, the study found a strong dose-response effect between how fully schools implemented CDC’s guidelines and how much smoking rates declined. Between 1999 and 2000 rates declined from 14.8 to 8.2 percent in schools with the highest implementation scores, from 17.8 to 13.9 percent in schools with middle scores, and from 17.1 to 15.6 percent in schools with the lowest scores. Smoking declines in the lowest-scoring schools were almost equal to the declines observed in non-funded schools.
