Contact: Tammy Skubinna B enton County 4-H is working to identify and reach Latino(a) youth in Benton County. One elementary school hosts a 4-H club that involves Latino(a) and non-Latino(a) youth. The sewing and quilting club is in its fourth year and meets during school time. Club members recently modeled in the county fashion revue. Youth are also judged on their clothing and quilting exhibits and top ones go on to County Fair. To help teachers and others who work with Latino(a) youth, the 4-H program has added a listing of Spanish curricula/resources to its web site. The resources are listed on the school enrichment page of the site. During the 2000-2001 4-H year, Benton County 4-H reached 131 Latino youth. Many of these youth were reached through the 4-H Wildlife Stewards and Windowsill Gardening Programs, both school enrichment programs. Latino youth also attended the 4-H Adventures Summer Day Camp.
    Deschutes County
Contact: David White An inter-organizational partnership between Deschutes County 4-H, the Oregon Council for Latino(a) Advancement (OCHA), and AmeriCorps, the national service learning program, was established in the spring of 2000. The goal of the partnership was to expand the 4-H program by including new audiences. A mentor for the Oregon Leadership Institute, which is conducted by OCHA, was awarded a team facilitator position by AmeriCorps. Under the agreement, the team facilitator joined the Deschutes County 4-H staff as a program assistant. Her responsibility was to recruit leaders and members from all segments of the county's population, including the Latino(a) community. The program met with great success; however, a loss of Americorps funds in the geographic area resulted in a temporary suspension of the program until new funding is secured.

The Willamette Methodist Mission began with a focus on education. Looking to the future, Mission Mill Museum carries this focus forward. The museum can be viewed not as an add-on field trip, but as a partner with schools, combining educational needs with solutions. It is the desire of Mission Mill Museum to provide students with the knowledge they need to develop their own sense of heritage by connecting the present to the past, enabling them to make better choices about their future. School Programs Historic Woolen Mill Tour – Students will be guided through a water powered woolen mill that operated from 1889 to 1962. Historic House Tour – Students will get a glimpse of what life was like for the first settlers of the Willamette Valley as they pass through the Jason Lee House, the Methodist Parsonage and the Boon House. Activities –These hands-on activities reinforce the lessons learned during the tour and can be gauged to the level of your class. Activity descriptions are listed below. Outreach – A Mission Mill Museum Interpreter can bring the history to you. All of our activity programs are available to visit your class. We will provide an activity leader and supplies.
