The Organic Crop Improvement Association is an international program of certification to strict organic standards. With thousands of certified members in seventeen countries, OCIA is a respected voice in the international organic community. Past OCIA began to take root informally in the late 1970s, when groups of organic farmers in the United States and Canada began to meet and share technical expertise. They established organic standards and certification guidelines, the foundation of OCIA's impartial third-party certification of all stages of organic production, processing and distribution.

http://www.nofavt.org/
Welcome to NOFA Vermont! Winter Conference, February 15, 2003! The Northeast Organic Farming Association of Vermont (NOFA-VT) is a non-profit association of farmers, gardeners, and consumers working to promote an economically viable and ecologically sound Vermont food system for the benefit of current and future generations. NOFA was founded in Vermont in 1971 and is the oldest organic farming association in the United States. Today, there are seven independent state NOFA chapters and one NOFA Interstate Council in the Northeast. NOFA's programs work in six key areas: Agricultural Education, Community Food Security, Organic Certification, Promotion, Social Action, and Technical Assistance. How do you know it's Organic?
In Vermont, these are the labels to look for:
This is the label of the Vermont Organic Farmer's (VOF). This "Certifed Organic" label is found on products grown or raised in Vermont which meet the strict criteria of VOF. This is the label of the Vermont Organic Farmer's (VOF) for Food Processors. In order to certify that food is organic at the retail level, processors, packagers, manufacturers and food handlers must adhere to a program as detailed and verifiable as do farmers to prevent the loss of organic integrity.

INTRODUCTION
This discussion group is for gardeners and plant growers who use, or are
interested in, Organic practices. Whilst being based in the UK, posters from
other areas are most welcome, but bear in mind that discussion will probably
have a bit of UK bias.
WHAT DOES ORGANIC MEAN?
Organic (with a capital 'O') practice is a form of plant and animal husbandry
which emphasises an approach sympathetic with the planetary ecosystem. In
general, synthetic chemicals are not used, and the use of natural fertilisers
and pest control techniques (like companion planting and appropriate mulching) is encouraged. Apart from the ecological benefits, this usually results in tastier food, free from the synthetics residues found in most
