Organic Gardening 101 More Trees and Shrubs Solutions by Hilary Stamper, Care2.com product manager and director of promotions Why Organic? By using pesticides and fertilizers on our lawns and gardens, we are responsible for almost 10 percent of our common water pollution. It IS possible to have a beautiful garden and/or yard without harm to you, your family, pets, or the environment.
Simple Solution: What is Organic Gardening?
Organic gardening involves growing plants in soil that contains organic, natural substances, uncontaminated by chemically formulated fertilizers or pesticides. Organic gardening emphasizes a holistic approach to cultivation. Ideally, it includes animals, insects, plants and soil to produce a "sustainable" food supply. "Sustainable" means that over time, the resources will be able to replenish themselves and thrive. Pest reduction and soil enhancement strategies can involve attention to soil quality, beneficial insects, and barrier plants. Why Care2 Garden Organically?

Gardening Tip of the Month, from Seattle Tilth's Maritime Northwest Garden Guide In an organic garden, soil temperature is an important factor in helping microorganisms make nutrients available to plants. In the low soil temperatures of spring, soil organisms slow down and make fewer nutrients available to plants. Liquid fertilizers are one way to provide water-soluble nutrients to plants under such adverse conditions. Liquid fertilizers can be served as a tea to the soil or applied as a foliar fertilizer, which is sprayed directly onto the leaves. Seattle Tilth Association 4649 Sunnyside Avenue North, Room 1

    Introduction
The recent passage of the National Organic Program Final Rule, coupled with growing consumer support for organic foods, have made farming organically an increasingly viable alternative for many U.S. farmers. In addition, there has been renewed awareness of organic agriculture on the part of public interest groups, marketing organizations, and agricultural researchers. This Alternative Farming Systems Information Center (AFSIC) web site serves as a starting point for those interested in organic production in agriculture. "Organic farming is one of the fastest growing segments of U.S. agriculture during the 1990s. USDA estimates that the value of retail sales of organic foods in 1999 was approximately $6 billion. The number of organic farmers is increasing by about 12 percent per year and now stands at about 12,200 nationwide, most of them small-scale producers. According to a recent USDA study, certified organic cropland more than doubled from 1992 to 1997. Two organic livestock sectors, eggs and dairy, grew even faster." ( USDA News Release, no. 0425.00

    95. Rec.gardens.ecosystems: Organic Gardening Based On Ecology
Important topics are pest/disease prevention and control, organic gardening, the use of compost, and gardening for wildlife.
    http://www.ibiblio.org/rge/
    About rec.gardens.ecosystems
rec.gardens.ecosystems is a Usenet newsgroup intended for the discussion of gardening topics from an ecological perspective. In "down to earth" language, this means trying to work in concert with nature, rather than trying to force it into rigid format. A second aspect of the ecological perspective is that one avoids the use of toxic substances and fertilizers. Both toxic substances and fertilizers may seem to have short term beneficial effects on the home garden, but invariably turn out to disrupt the natural processes. The net result is that natures's dynamic balance is forced into a fixed balance, that can only be maintained by the use of more toxic substances and fertilizers. Gardening from an ecological perspective incorprorates organic gardening , and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) , but is not identical to either of them. What they have in common is that both can only be successful if based on a knowledge of how nature works. In accordance with this vision on gardening, rec.gardens.ecosystems is a moderated group. This means that there are a couple of people keeping a close eye on the group, and scanning potential contributions before they pop up in the group. This is mainly a preventive approach, enabeling us to keep the group free of the usual Usenet pests. More details on the group and its moderation policy are described in the charter and section A of the group's list of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ). The other sections of the FAQ provide a growing body of knowledge on gardening from ecological principles.

Organoponicos are concrete container bed gardens found in urban areas all over Cuba (Photo: by Kristina Taboulchanas)
      Overview
Prior to 1990 urban gardens were virtually non-existent in Cuba as they were perceived by many to be a sign of poverty and underdevelopment (Altieri et al.,1999). For years Cuba had been dependent on trade subsidies and imports from their Soviet allies. With the collapse of the Soviet Union (USSR) in 1989, Cuba was plunged into a serious economic crisis known as the Special Period . By 1990, Cuba had lost 85% of its imports including both agricultural inputs and food. Food imports had accounted for 57% of Cuban caloric intake (Murphy, 1999). Before the Special Period, Cuba's agriculture was based on an intensive monoculture approach that was heavily dependent on agrochemical imports. The demise of the USSR devastated Cuba's agriculture due to the loss of 80% of its fertiliser and pesticide imports (Warwick, 1999). The lack of agricultural imports forced Cuba to diversify farming practices and to adopt methods of organic agriculture. Most importantly, this crisis exposed Cuba's heavy dependency on imports and seriously threatened food security. The passing of the "Cuba Democracy Act" in 1992 and the "Helms-Burton Act" in 1996 (by the US Congress) exacerbated the economic crisis (Warwick, 1999). In response to this crisis the Cuban government launched a nation wide urban agriculture movement as an alternative source of food security.
