Scott R. Benson:
Abiotic and biotic factors related to the distribution and relative abundance of marine mammals and seabirds in Monterey Bay, California. Marine mammals and seabirds are important components of coastal marine ecosystems, but knowledge of their foraging ecology is limited, even in areas as well-studied as Monterey Bay. The purposes of this study are 1) to identify patterns of density and distribution of prey species, 2) to examine physical and biological factors that are important in determining these patterns, and 3) to examine the distribution and relative abundance of marine mammals and seabirds in relation to these prey patches. A combination of oceanographic sampling, hydroacoustic assessment of zooplankton volume, and visual surveys of seabirds and marine mammals are being used to investigate interactions between the physical environment and the distribution and abundance of seabird and marine mammal predators and their prey in Monterey Bay.
