  • understand the mechanisms of flight and specializations for other kinds of locomotion (walking, swimming)
  • understand thermoregulation in birds
  • understand photoperiodism, migration, and orientation in birds
  • know the difference between ultimate and proximate factors in establishing timing of migration, breeding, etc
  • understand basic bird behavior, including that related to feeding, breeding, and social interactions
  • understand avian breeding biology from initiation of territoriality (in the species which exhibit it) through pair formation and raising of young
  • get a basic understanding of population regulation of birds
  • know bird topography, general avian feather tract patterns, feather types, feather structure, and how feather colors are determined

Beyond Birding - Field Projects for Inquisitive Birders Thomas C. Grubb, Jr. Department of Zoology The Ohio State University Back Home Published by The Boxwood Press Used with Permission Preface Chapter One - Ornithology as a Science Chapter Two - Analytical Ornithology Chapter Seven - When Do Great Blue Herons Give Up? ... Appendix 2 - The Spearman Rank Correlation Test Preface One of the most influential field studies of birds ever performed was conducted just north of my university here in Columbus. While carrying on her duties as wife, mother and homemaker, Mrs. Margaret Morse Nice devoted many hours to studying the behavior and ecology of Song Sparrows . Mrs. Nice's account of her work is generally regarded as one of the finer examples of descriptive ornithology ever produced in North America by anyone, amateur or professional. At the time of Mrs. Nice's study, amateurs were routinely making important contributions to ornithology. General conclusions they reached from their field work were useful additions to the body of knowledge about birds, However, from the 1950s on, as the study of avian biology became more analytical and less descriptive, contributions by amateurs became less pivotal to the discipline. One of the functions of this book is to bring the techniques of analytical ornithology to the amateur student of birds. Descriptive ornithology, which Mrs. Nice accomplished so beautifully, requires careful observation and note-taking on the behavior of birds in their natural environment. The next step is to look for generalities, common attributes about the events seen. For example, after a number of years of watching the Song Sparrows she had color-banded, Mrs. Nice could generalize that in Columbus, Ohio, only males of the species stayed on the breeding ground all winter.

Early in the century the work of the British naturalist George Edwards [1694-1773] earned him the title "father of British ornithology." Interestingly, Edwards included a large number of careful descriptions and illustrations of American birds in his publications. The Hill Collection includes Edwards's four-volume A natural history of uncommon birds , and his Gleanings of natural history (1758-1764) is part of the History of Science Collection. Edwards engraved all the plates and hand colored most of the prints himself, showing considerable skill in his portrayals though little sense of life or personality in the birds. Also included in the Hill Collection is a copy of Peter Brown's New illustrations of zoology, containing fifty coloured plates of new, curious and non-descript birds , intended as a supplement to Edwards's works. Two other leading figures in British ornithology of the 18th century were Thomas Pennant [1726-1798] and John Latham [1740-1837]. Pennant's first publication, a handsomely illustrated folio with colored plates, was
