About the Association and its activities
The Association of Field Ornithologists (AFO) is dedicated to the study and conservation of birds and their natural habitats. It was founded in 1922 as New England Bird Banding Association, and shortly thereafter became the Northeastern Bird-Banding Association. The organization broadened its interests and re-named itself the Association of Field Ornithologists in 1987. The AFO prides itself as serving as a bridge between the professional and the amateur ornithologist. The organization's membership and governing council consist of both amateur and professional ornithologists, in recognition of the contributions that both make to ornithology. AFO and its members contribute to ornithology by:

The Club promotes the work of existing regional societies and encourages birders to visit lesser known areas of the region and to actively search for threatened species. Members receive a twice-yearly color bulletin. American Ornithologists' Union Founded in 1883, the AOU is the oldest and largest organization in the New World devoted to the scientific study of birds. Although the AOU is primarily a professional organization, its membership of almost 4,000 includes many amateurs dedicated to the advancement of ornithological science.

Additional Resources in the Library of Congress
The Library of Congress's General Collection includes a great deal of material reflecting the enormous popular interest in ornithology and bird-life which flourished in the United States in this era, mingling science, sentiment, piety, moral didacticism, andnot leastconservation advocacy, and providing the American conservation movement itself with both significant direction and a major portion of its popular support. After consulting works included in the Conservation Collection, readers who have direct access to the Library, or to other major research libraries, might wish to look at titles such as those on the list below. They might also wish to consult some of the titles on four other Additional Resources lists, "The Nature Essay, c.1850-1920" "Arbor and Bird Day Observance, c.1872-1920" "Juvenile Nature Literature and Nature Pedagogy, c.1850-1920" , and "Sportsmen and Conservationism, c.1850-1920." for more information Oscar Wilde once wrote that "Enough is as bad as a meal. More than enough is as good as a feast". He could have been writing about the BTO's Nest Record Scheme when we have recently marked the feast to celebrate 1,000,000 Nest Record Cards! Each card representing the detailed observations made on a single nest by a volunteer observer for the BTO. It is incredible to think that when Sir Julian Huxley and James Fisher got together to start the "Hatching and Fledging Enquiry" in 1939 that it would be one of the cornerstones of the BTO's Monitoring programme nearly 60 years on. But now it is the biggest, most active and most computerised scheme in the World. The United States Nest Record Program is next in size, holding about a third of the BTO's total and the Finnish scheme is the next most active, currently receiving about a sixth of the records that the BTO receives each year. The BTO now receives more than 35,000 records per year from about 1000 volunteer birdwatchers, about half of which are organised from clubs and societies, or less formal groups, that carry out nest recording as part of their annual round of birdwatching activities.
