“My God! They’re getting closer. They see me! They’re shooting at me. I must hide. The streets are full of potholes, the buildings gutted shells, and the vegetation is burning. There’s no place to hide. They’ve sent the bombers and are bombing the whole countryside. All I can hear are explosions and screams; I feel sick. They’ve killed off all the women and children, and now they will kill me. The Nazis will burn up the whole world, and no one will be able to resist them. How can this be happening? Everything is in flames, and I’m all alone in the midst of them. I want to survive. Help me, someone! Please, HELP!
What’s that bright streak in the sky? Oh, it’s a shooting star. I’ve seen it before somewhere. I wish it would lift me up and away from here. OH MY GOD! The bombers are right above my head. They’ve dropped a bomb – it’s coming right at me! I’m dead. HELP ME!” “Gloria, wake up. It’s only a dream. You’re safe now.” Dan gently shook her arm as she awoke.

I like to give credit to everyone. You could say I'm all aboot it.
Within half an hour I will be sitting in a dentist's office refamiliarizing myself with the ever present dentist office smell. What the hell is that stuff, anyway? A combination of the "toothpaste" they use? Cherry Vanilla mixed with Lemon Mint? Or is it the smell of unmasked hatred? My guess is the second. I bet that when a dentist office is first built it smells like paint and new carpet. As soon as they hit the ten patient mark, it begins to stink. Same with doctor's officesafter administering a couple of shots, no amount of lysol will ever make the smell what it used to be. It can be made worse if it's a pediatrician's office because little kids probably puke everywhere. My theory, though, is that all the collective hatred and fear of dentists everywhere is so
Time passes, and she's back. She being me, that is. It's rare that I do a double update in one day, but most days I don't go to the dentist's. Besides, I didn't want you guys nitpicking at me about spelling "poison" wrong or mixing up today's date. Moving onI went to the check in desk and said, "Hi, I'm Tracie C, I'm here to get my teeth criticized at 10:30, bitch." Well...not really, but you all know that's what I MEANT. Anyway, the lady looks at me and says "Oh", then goes back to work. Is that a little weird, or is it just me? I've heard a lot of things when I check in for appointments, from brusque orders to sign something all the way to overly cheery inquiries about my summer. Never, though, have I heard "Oh". It was disconcerting. To make matters worse, my hygienist was a

I never feel more at home in America than at a ball game, be it in park or in sandlot. Beyond this I know not. And dare not. - Robert Frost, 1956. The Polo Grounds: A Calm Review of Baseball Thursday, January 9, 2003 The Kid and The Ogre: Hand in Hand to Cooperstown
by Jeff Kallman
Props are due in more ways than one to Eddie Murray and Gary Carter on their Hall of Fame election. You couldn't get a better-scripted Cooperstown induction if you hired Morrie Ryskind and David Lynch to team up for it. Gary Carter: haunted by his mother's early death, yet nursing and deploying a second-nature gregarity that must have taken a certain courage to sustain; resented almost more than respected for his ebullience, his nicety, his absolute and unpretentious ease in the media's white heat and the public's duplicitous affections. Eddie Murray: humbled by the shortfalls of four older ballplaying brothers (only one cracked the Show: Rich Murray, for 57 games with the San Francisco Giants); speaking only when he had something genuine to say (which was more often than you think, his first nine seasons); driven completely into hard armour when he made his first disabled-list trip, his owner flogging him falsely for skating, the unwashed dumb enough to believe it; smeared unfairly as an ogre (speaking politely) from that day forward. When this couple (Dodger teammates for one season) walk into the Hall of Fame together, you will see a huge upswing in Cooperstown dental business. That'll be the Conventional Wisdom needing orthodontal work post haste from their jaws hitting the ground. It just won't seem real until these two California sons, so distinct yet of common enough ground, stand plaques in hand on 27 July, in smart suits rather than baseball fatigues.

Another Sounds Off
With all the public policy experts that exist in Hollywood, I'm starting to wonder why we don't just move the capital there and let all our problems be hewn away by the deep-thinking minds that make their living being good looking and reading the words someone else wrote. The latest celebrity to try to show every American The One True Way and pull the wool off their eyes about to reveal how they're being duped by a greedy oil baron who has fooled them all because, well, they're just stupid nobodies, is Janeane Garofalo , but there's a twist here. Not only does she have the usual slate of uninformed opinions, vague accusations and I'd-like-to-teach-the-world-to-sing policy suggestions, she's also a tad miffed that celebrities aren't given more attention and shown the kind of respect that their weighty gravitas deserves. "They have actors on so they can marginalize the movement," the stand-up comic says. "It's much easier to toss it off as some bizarre, unintelligent special-interest group. If you're an actor who is pro-war, you're a hero. If you're an actor who's against the war, you're suspect. You must have a weird angle or you just hate George Bush." Which of course makes one wonder as to why she would willingly contribute to the marginalization of the anti-war movement. A pro-war spy amonst the Hollywood faithful perhaps If so, she's just blown her cover.

South Park Secrets
March 28-April 3, 1998
TV Guide came out with these secrets about South Park two years ago, and I present them to you now, along with some observations about them
  • IT ALL BEGAN WITH A HOMICIDAL SNOWMAN
By now fans know that an animated short, "The Spirit of Christmas," inspired South Park. But it was preceded by an earlier version made while Parker and Stone were at University of Colorado. It's about four little boys trying to stop a snowman on a killing spree in the snow-blanketed mountain town.
  • OH, MY GOD! THEY'VE KILLED KENNY!
Why has that boy in the hood died in every episode except one? "We just like to kill him," says Stone." And we really like the line, "Oh, my God, they killed Kenny!'"
  • PARKER AND STONE WRITE ABOUT WHAT THEY KNOW
"I'm Stan, and Matt is Kyle," says Parker. Cartman, they say, is a little bit of everyone ("He's the garbage in everyone's soul," according to Stone).
  • SOME PARENTS MAKE GOOD ROLE MODELS
Like Parker, Stan has a father who's a geologist; and a mom who is, as Trey puts it, "normal." But, he explains, "There's this side of my mother that I use for Cartman's mom. No matter how bad things are, she would always just bake cookies." Stone's parents, however, are nothing like Kyle's. "Kyle's father wears a yarmulke, and my dad is a big, tall Irish guy," he says. "And my mom's not reactionary like Kyle's. My family's kewl, but really boring."
  • DURING COLLEGE, PARKER COPIED FROM HIS TEACHER, NOT OTHER STUDENTS

Oh we love your thoughts. Especially when we've published something so controversial like last month's toothy chart . Several of you wrote in and told me I missed the obvious. Here's a letter from author Leopold Bratislav: Sorry, gotta argue in a big way. For any number of reasons our little starlets Pelletier and Sale deserve top billing. Start counting:
  • There's 2 of them and they both smile.
  • They have more images of them smiling than the rest combined (I count video as infinite images - so there)
  • They're the last page of the magazine - ie LIFO, as in they're at the top of the stack in the mailbox. As in they're fresh.
  • They smiled. Then they cried. Then they smiled. Hell, they laughed. That's pathos. Bonus marks for Pathos. Ok, so Silken got a canoe through the chest - she gets bonus points for that but nothin' compares with
    • Gold expectation
    • Real Silver
    • Tears
    • Wailing and national chest beating - on USA soil in the land of polygamy
    • French (real French) people admitting to wrong doing
    • Real Gold (well, its shared but the other one is probably at this instant being melted down to make fake teeth for Russian mob bad guys. Expect the Russian skaters to defect soon anyway.)
  • 70. Individual Dental Insurance: Fees And Premiums

    FEES AND PREMIUMS
    Dental Fees
In Canada, insurance companies partially cover the suggested fees listed in each provincial Dental Association Fee Guide Although this guide is published annually, some insurance companies pay benefits according to outdated guides. In such a case, annual fee increases are not taken into account, and the patient is left with a higher co-payment. This said, a good dental insurance plan should concur with the most recent Fee Guide Since prices in the Dental Association Fee Guide are only suggested, dentists are free to set their own fees. These fees vary according the dentist's level of knowledge, experience, and technical expertise. Staff salaries and equipment costs also affect fees. Insurance Premiums Although provincial health insurance does not cover dental treatment, dental insurance premiums are often tax deductible.

    Shih Tzu Top Knots (Casual)
An Owner's Guide to the Shih Tzu published by Howell Book House, Inc. 1. First, with a parting comb, part the hair between the eyes, from inner corner to inner corner, being very careful not to injure the eye. 2. Part the hair back from the outside corners of the eyes. Brush the coat down over the ears, and back behind the eyes. 3. Make a part across the skull about in the middle. 4. Brush the first section all forward. Use a very small latex band (orthodontal or special topknot bands work best). Take a few hairs near the back of this section, and pull them straight up. This will anchor the front part to the topskull, and also will create a pretty poof. I like to twist the band one more time after this step to set the topnot firmly in place, but this is optional. 5. Make a "half-moon" part for the back section. Coming forward, band, and again anchor it, only use a few hairs from the front part of the section. 6. Put a bow on the first section. Join the two sections together with another band or two (depending on the length of the hair). Place these above the first two and behind the bow. Voila!! the finished beautiful Shih Tzu!!

Okay - We're all back again and things are flowing. News of the month: Brian and Gaylene DeMars left suddenly in order to help their son Kevin get the proper orthodontal and speech therapy work that was needed. They'll be gone for 15 months and are relocating in Fresno CA. Melanie Spears , who was teaching 8th grade English, remained home permanently in April after a visit to her mother who was sick with cancer. Mrs. Shirley Eppy has had the first of several chemo treatments in Calgary, Alberta. The Eppys have found their dream home looking out on the Rocky Mountains. Keep praying for Shirley's health and for a job for Garry The Swansons are now back in the States readjusting and looking for a new teaching position. With all these folks leaving our third term has left us stretched a bit. We have had Wally and Donna Coots arrive to take over Westervelt dorm and Ethics. Wally has been a youth pastor for 25 years and is full of energy. He's about 6' 4" and a basketball fanatic. Several of our seniors have been disappointed by their financial aid packages or been turned down by the College of their choice. Most of you will remember this time of uncertainty when you re-examine your dreams.
