THE ORTHODOX PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
Ecumenical Relations With Reformed Churches
A historical study focussing especially on the Canadian Reformed Churches
by R.E. Pot
"It is concerning precisely this federation, the OPC, that an explosion of articles and letters has appeared in church magazines of the Canadian Reformed Churches in the last two decades. Synods inevitably find themselves confronted with appeals and letters concerning the OPC, and more and more pages in the Acts of Synods attest to a scrutinizing spotlight on the OPC … To one who has only recently placed his roots in the Canadian Reformed Churches, and hence somewhat ignorant about developments in the North American ecclesiastical scene, the amount of discussion concerning the OPC was a little perplexing. Why all the attention?" - excerpt from the Introduction This paper was initially prepared as a paper in April 1995 for a church history course at the Theological College of the Canadian Reformed Churches. Minor revisions were made in March 1998 to incorporate developments prior to the convening of General Synod Fergus in May 1998. It aims to help come to a greater understanding of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church by examining its roots and history. It gives special attention to its ecumenical contacts with other Reformed Churches, especially the development in its relationship with the Canadian Reformed Churches. May it serve in giving us a greater understanding of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church, and an eye for the Lord’s work in her history.

Connections to the World of Orthodoxy Updated August 14, 1998 Any scheme of classification is (Aristotle notwithstanding), to some degree or other, arbitrary. The scheme of classification of these links is no exception. There are many areas (most actually) which overlap and which some would think are redundant. However, it is hoped that the following breakdown will be helpful to the stranger trying to navigate his way through the information provided, and to give some sense of the Orthodox vision of faith and piety. Please note that these pages are now arranged so that each section is now a separate page. Now you no longer have to wait for the whole links section to load before you can use it. Only the links to the Search Engines remain as a separate section on this index page. Also, wherever and however practicable, the links have been alphabetised and otherwise appropriately ordered. Again, if anyone knows the new addresses of links which have changed or otherwise gone dead please let me know. Thanks!

“Thus saith the L ORD , ‘Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls.’” - Jeremiah Introduction
In “ Christianity and Materialistic Reductionism ” I recounted the history of my return to the Christian faith after 15 years in unbelief. Upon finding myself a Christian, I was faced with the task of choosing the right church for myself and my family from among a multitude of options. To appreciate the immensity of this problem, take a glance at the ‘churches’ section of your local Yellow Pages . A moment ago, I counted approximately 70 categories of Christian churches (including denominations and logical groupings of non-denominational congregations) in the telephone book for Northern Virginia. How is a new Christian supposed to select the best church from so many options? The challenge seems overwhelming. What follows is a sketch of how I stumbled through the church selection process. I studied, visited various churches, and reasoned for thirteen years before reaching my final conclusion. The story, if told with historical accuracy, would be altogether too detailed and confusing. To simplify matters and keep the page count low, I will discuss my trek in a semi-chronological manner, addressing the various options in the following order: Protestant, Roman Catholic, Anglican, and Orthodox. I did, in fact, initially concentrate on various denominations within Protestantism. As I became dissatisfied with the Protestant approach, I began to explore Roman Catholicism. For various reasons, at least one of which I will discuss later, I decided to investigate other options. In time my path led me through the Anglican Catholic Church to Orthodoxy.

Updated on 2/2/2002 The Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria and all Africa is an autocephalous Orthodox Church ministering to the spiritual needs of all Orthodox Christians throughout Africa. The Patriarchal Throne, established by the disciple of Christ, Evangelist Markos in the year 40, represents one of the oldest established Churches in the Christian world. The long history of the Patriarchate covers more than 20 centuries. In this period of time there has been a succession of Patriarchs, from the Evangelist Markos to Petros VII, our present Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and all Africa. P.O.Box 2006
