    File System Types
Computer file management systems can be classified by the type of file organization they provide ( Flat File or Hierarchical File Systems); and the type of user interface they present ( Character/Command or Graphical/Event Driven). These file organizations and interfaces greatly affect how users manipulate and interact with their information.
    Flat File Systems
Early computer file management systems ( MSDOS 1.0 IBM CMS , etc.) only allow a linear list of the files. In order to group related files, users were forced to name the related files very similar, usually varying only the last 1 or 2 characters of the name or the type (extension) of the file. To be fair CMS also allows a user to maintain several ' virtual ' disks which do provide a minimal level of hierarchical organization. A contributing limiting factor in these file systems was the restriction on the name of the file length (usually 8 characters still present in DOS and Windows 3.1 today). This serious drawback often requires the use of cryptic file names, where in the worst case each character is a code with a specific meaning. Fortunately these systems have declined in use due to the popularity of hierarchical file systems.

Abstract: Language-basedextensible systems, such as Java Virtual Machines and SPIN, use type safety to provide memory safety in a single address space. By using software to provide safety, they can support more efficient IPC. Memory safety alone, however, is not sufficient to protect different applications from each other. Such systems need to support a process model that enables the control and management of computational resources. In particular, language-based extensible systems should support... SCO Unix from Santa Clara CA is offeriong a FREE liscense for either oper Destop v 5.0.4 or Unisware for personal use. Also SUN systems is offering a FREE copy of its Solaris X86 version 2.6 for a limited number of personal users.
Linux is, and has been freely available on the net or can be purchaed as installation CD's from RedHat, ygdrasill, slackware and others. There is a FreeBSD Unix also available on the web. Alternatives abound. If you want to run your favorite Micro$ludge applications, there are several efforts underway to allow porting or emulation of the windows environment for Linux, OS/2, SCO Unix, and Solaris. NOt only should your compete, use the proven Chinese tactic to win a war, assimilate your enemy.

The choices are basically to use sudo, a suid program, or a suid script. To allow my users to shutdown or reboot their workstation I use the small C progam included below. If installed according to the instructions in the comments it is a reasonably secure solution to the problem. * NAME * oper - allow users to shtdown or reboot the system * SYNOPSIS * DESCRIPTION * Rebooting or shutting down a workstation requires root privs. This utility
