The WORLD OWL TRUST has, for over 25 years, given unstinting effort to ensure that endangered owls the world over survive into the next millennium for future generations to enjoy. Formed in 1972, the WORLD OWL TRUST began conducting extensive research into our native British Barn Owl after discovering that the wild population was declining rapidly. The WORLD OWL TRUST took up the challenge and, by means of habitat restoration, education, and captive-breeding and release programmes, has to date been involved in introducing over 1600 Barn Owls back into the wild. Many populations in the U.K. owe their existence to the work of the Trust and its members.
The WORLD OWL TRUST, a registered charity, is the world's premier owl conservation organisation and promotes scientific research, habitat creation and restoration, a UK national nest-box scheme, together with breeding programmes. Currently a leading player in twelve overseas projects the WORLD OWL TRUST is also committed to education and spreading the conservation message. Current research programmes include a study of Avian Malaria in Snowy Owls, owl taxonomy by DNA analysis, success rates in Barn Owl release schemes, and a new European Little Owl survey.

The National Birds of Pre y Centre from the air - 2002 Important Notice For anyone who is considering visiting the Centre – this is your last year (2003) to do so in its present location. The bulk of the National Birds of Prey Centre is relocating to the US at the end of this year. We have been offered the chance of joining with another group and extending the work that we have done here for the last 36 years. This opportunity is too good to lose. However – we shall be open as usual for this coming season – seven days a week until October 31 st It is planned that a smaller part of the National Birds of Prey Centre will remain and continue on with the courses, the experience days, the owl evenings and the work of the National Birds of Prey Trust. For further information see the pages on the move, which will be written and updated over the coming months. So one and all, this really is an opportunity not to be missed. This is your last chance to see this collection of birds in the setting of the Gloucestershire countryside that it has enjoyed for so long. Next year if you want to see this collection you will have to come to South Carolina which is a little further to go!

Barn Owl
Tyto alba Length: 14" - 21" Wingspan: 40.5" - 45" Also known as the ghost owl or the spirit owl, the barn owl once frightened many people and was the focus of many superstitions. Now, the economic importance of this owl is becoming clear. The barn owl has an usually long legs and an unusually long beak. The eyes of the barn owl differ from most other owls in a few ways. Their eyes are not yellow, but rather mahogany in color. Their eyes are small for an owl of such size. Barn owls also despise daylight and do not seem to be able to cope with it as well as other owls. These owls are strictly nocturnal. Barn owls probably have the most acute hearing of any of the owls. They rely mainly on sound for hunting and in experiments it was proven that these owls can hunt by sound alone with 100% accuracy. Barn owls hunt from a perch listening to their intended prey move along. Once the animal stops moving, the barn owl swoops down onto it and grabs it with its talons. Primary food for the barn owl consist of mice and rats, but large insects, reptiles, amphibians, and on occasion a songbird. There are two natural enemies for the barn owl to worry about, the great horned owl and the prairie falcon. Generally the barn owl is not harassed by songbirds. Humans are the barn owls greatest threat. Once people destroyed the owls whenever the opportunity presented itself. The mortality rate of the barn owl is high with only 60 out of a 100 surviving their first year. A sizable portion of these deaths are the result of eating rodents that had been previously poisoned. The average life span is 5 to 11 years in the wild. Their main defense is to hide, but they will attack intruders. The owls use their sharp talons aiming for the intruder's eyes.

CyberGuide by Michele Wilson-Manos
Introduction This supplemental CyberGuide to Owls In The Family was developed as part of the Schools of California Online Resources for Educators (SCORE) Project , funded by the California Technology Assistance Program (CTAP).
The links here have been scrutinized for their grade and age appropriateness; however, contents of links on the web change continuously. Teachers should preview all links before introducing CyberGuides to students.
This CyberGuide, designed to supplement the teaching of Owls In The Family , consists of five activities that provide resources for students to explore the geography of Canada, (the setting of the book), dissect owl pellets, learn about Great Horned Owls and gain information about the author. While completing these activities, students will discover answers to the following questions:
  • How is the geography of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan different or similar to where the student lives?
  • What can owl pellets tell us about the diet of an owl? How do Great Horned Owls differ from other owls?

There are about 162 different species of owls alive today, inhabiting a huge variety of ecological niches around the world, from rain forests to the tundra Smallest and Largest : The smallest owl in the world is the Elf Owl ( Micrathene whitneyi ), which is about 6.1 inches (16 cm) long, has a wingspan of 15 inches (38 cm), and weighs about 1.5 ounces (4g). The largest owls are the Great Gray Owls ( Strix nebulosa ) [which are about 33 inches (84 cm) long, have a wingspan of about 5 feet (152 cm), and weigh about 3 pounds (1450 g)], the Eurasian Eagle Owls ( Bubo bubo ) [which are about 28 inches (71 cm) long, have a wingspan of about 5.2 feet (160 cm), and weigh up to 9.8 pounds (4200 g)], and the Great Horned Owls ( Bubo virginianus ) [which are about 25 inches (63 cm) long, have a wingspan of about 5 feet (152 cm), and weigh about 4 pounds (1800 g)]. Eyes : Owls have a large head and large eyes that face forwards (unlike other birds, whose eyes are on the sides of their head). This eye placement gives them binocular vision and very precise depth perception. Also, there are circles of radiating feathers surrounding each eye, giving them a wide-eyed, alert look. Diet : Owls are carnivores (meat-eaters). Most are nocturnal and hunt at night. They use a keen sense of sight to find prey in the dark (owls see mostly in black and white). They have an acute sense of hearing which also helps in finding meals. Owls are stealth hunters; they can easily sneak up on their prey since their fluffy feathers give them almost silent flight. Owls hunt and eat
