Meteorology of Ozone Depletion
    The polar winter leads to the formation of the polar vortex which isolates the air within it.
    Cold temperatures (less than 190 K) form inside the vortex; cold enough for the formation of Polar Stratospheric Clouds (PSCs) composed of ice and nitric acid.
    PSCs provide a reaction surface for the ozone destruction reactions involving chlorine and bromine.
    Many of the chemical reactions require sunlight, so the ozone destruction does not begin until the polar night ends in the late winter or early spring.
    Ozone loss is rapid, especially over Antarctica in October.
    The northern hemisphere is warmer than the southern hemisphere, it warms up earlier in the spring, and by the time there is sunlight available, the PSCs have already disappeared. This appears to explain why there is no Arctic ozone hole (yet). The Arctic

Meteorology Observatory of Neumayer Station
Since March 1981 a meteorological observatory programme has been carried out at the Georg-von-Neumayer Station Koldewey Station in the Arctic. The programme consists of 3 main parts:
3-hourly routine synoptic observations, daily upper air soundings, surface radiation and mast measurements. upper air ozone soundings were included and the ... surface radiation measurements were intensified.
The meteorological measurements are performed in close cooperation with the measurements of the air chemistry observatory at Neumayer. Both observatories contribute to the network of "Global Atmospheric Watch" from the WMO (Click on thumbnail)

    EVALUATION OF THE 1995 AND 1996 OZONE SEASONS -WITH A SUMMARY OF THE 1997 SEASON- IN THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA October 1997 Summary The 1997 summer ozone season was the cleanest on record (1962 to 1997) in the San Francisco Bay Area with no exceedances of the national ozone standard. But the previous two years, 1995 and 1996, were more severe than any experienced since 1987. They followed 26 years in which the Bay Area's peak ozone levels steadily declined. They also followed five years in which none of the permanent air monitoring sites operated by the BAAQMD violated the national ozone standard, thus enabling the Bay Area to become the nation's largest metropolitan area to attain this standard. As of now, three monitoring sites have recorded more than three exceedances in the last three years. Planning and regulatory agencies need to understand why the 1995 and 1996 episodes were so severe, and what this portends. An earlier report (De Mandel and Fairley, 1996) occasioned by the 1995 ozone season came to several conclusions:
    • the summer of 1995 included an unusually large number of days with weather conditions conducive to high ozone;

    In theory the energy and air quality implications of climate and meteorological changes are relatively well established. Climate fluctuations on spatial and temporal scales have significant impacts on energy use, emission of pollutants, atmospheric chemical reactions, and other parameters such as diffusion, transport, and deposition of airborne pollutants. The Heat Island Group's objective is to understand the relationship between energy and air quality with a focus on the role of urban meteorology. Urban areas are known to generate their own weather patterns, urban heat islands, convective clouds, and precipitation. Urban heat islands also induce increased emission of pollutants. The Heat Island Group performs meteorological and air quality modeling to understand and quantify these relationships from the perspective of developing mitigation strategies, such as urban heat island control. Producing better meteorological forecasts and modeling capabilities is useful for improving the prediction of energy needs and the related distribution of electricity and gas. The energy crisis in California serves as a reminder that such forecast models and quantification tools may become even more important in the future. Figure.

    Abstract Stratospheric ozone is vital for controlling the UV radiation reaching the Earth's surface and affecting the radiation balance the Earth system. Transport and chemical processes determine the exact concentration of ozone at a given location and at a given time in the stratosphere. I will describe the current status of our understanding of the stratospheric ozone layer and describe the reasons for the recent changes in the abundance of ozone. This description will be based on the most recent WMO assessment of stratospheric ozone. I will highlight the summer polar stratosphere as a region that is not well understood. I will show that laboratory measurements are a crucial component in a better understanding of the stratospheric ozone changes. The role of laboratory studies will be exemplified using the work carried out at NOAA Aeronomy Lab in Boulder. Tuesday, April 18 at 4:00pm /

    The Centre was established in July, 1993 under the Australian Government's Cooperative Research Centres Program . The centre brings together Monash University , the Bureau of Meteorology , the CSIRO Divisions of Atmospheric Research and Telecommunications and Industrial Physics and Silicon Graphics Pty Ltd/Cray Research in a collaborative program of meteorological research and education.
    Located at Monash University, the CRC is one of the principal centres in Australia for research and graduate training in the Meteorological Sciences. Our understanding of climate variability and global change comes from many sources: studies of past changes in the atmosphere and climate, data from current observing systems and field experiments, and simulations involving mathematical models. Each contributes to our knowledge of the fundamental processes that control the physical, chemical and biological components of the Earth system. Understanding these processes is essential for improving the predictive models being developed to aid society and to assist policy makers to plan for and minimise global change.     Meteorology Ozone Observations in the Stratosphere and Mesosphere Observation of Winds in the Stratosphere and Mesosphere A foil chaff experiment was conducted at Uchinoura, by launching two Viper-3A rockets on 14 January 1997. The observed winds at the 80-100 km altitudes showed temporal variation of atmospheric waves, and also contributed to validation of wind estimation of the Yamagawa MF radar (50 km west of Uchinoura) involving the MU radar (600 km east). The SEEK (Sporadic-E Experiment over Kyushu) Campaign Meteorological Observations Synoptic observations of wind, temperature and altitude in the stratosphere and lower mesosphere by MT-135P rockets were carried out by the Japan Meteorological Agency at the Ryori Meteorological Rocket Observation Station. Thirty-rockets were launched both in 1996 and 1997. The observation data have been reported to the World Data Center A (WDC-A) in USA. MT-135P is a single rocket with a diameter of 135 mm, length of 3.3 m and weight of 69 kg.

The atmosphere can be divided into layers based on its temperature, as shown in the figure below. These layers are the troposphere , the stratosphere , the mesosphere and the thermosphere . A further region, beginning about 500 km above the earth's surface, is called the exosphere The red line on the figure below shows how temperature varies with height (the temperature scale is given along the bottom of the diagram). The scale on the right shows the pressure. For example, at a height of 50 km, the pressure is only about one thousandth of the pressure at the ground. Click on a particular part of the figure for more information about it. THE REGIONS
    The Troposphere
    This is the lowest part of the atmosphere - the part we live in. It contains most of our weather - clouds, rain, snow. In this part of the atmosphere the temperature gets colder as the distance above the earth increases, by about 6.5°C per kilometre. This change of temperature with height varies from day to day, depending on the weather.
