Taking Action
Overview

Taking Action gives students a step-by-step framework to plan and implement a civic-participation project in response to the events of September 11.
First, students read a story about a group of high school students and teachers who planned and implemented a Middle East teach-in. Second, they brainstorm project ideas and choose a project to work on. Third, they work in small groups to create project plans, compare plans and combine best elements to make a master plan. Finally, they put their master plan to work and evaluate their progress.

After years of playing music as the studio band for Motown records in virtual annonmity, they received their long overdue acknowledgement as an intgregal part of rock and roll history. I was proud to be part of the production of the movie about their live’s,"Standing In The Shadows of Motown," to help share the importance of this group and motivate students to pursue their dreams I have created the "Funk Brothers Webquest".
In addition, if you are here are some books by various Funk Brothers to recommend to your librarian or for developing an intergrated unit of study.

    Racing a Comet
By Mary Ann Brearton and Susan Shuttleworth "I knew that if there was to be any change in the way that teachers taught science, there had to be a deep change in the philosophy of our staff." This insight from an elementary school teacher reveals both the promise and peril of standards-based education reform. Certainly, clear and specific content standards for K- 12 education can be a powerful catalyst for change in teaching and learning. With high-quality standards in place across the content disciplines, educators can coordinate reform in an education system and focus on improved academic achievement for all students. That is the promise of standards-based reform.
    Group taps into expertise
For three years, a group of K-12 teachers and administrators in Philadelphia met with Project 2061 staff for up to a month every summer and once a week during the school year. The Philadelphia educators studied Project 2061 benchmarks and ways to apply them in real-world classrooms. Eventually, these educators were ready to conduct similar workshops for other Philadelphia teachers.

    How Students Learn
Several participants point to specific topics in student learning. McCormick calls attention to problems in learning about systems: how and when children can learn specific ideas about systems. There is an almost complete lack of research on how students learn about system thinking. McCormick also reviews the status of research on problem solving in England where he and his colleagues have found that students follow rigid algorithms reminiscent of the fictional ritual of the scientific method. Rowell suggests that future directions for research should build on critical scrutiny of assumptions underlying technology education and on cognitive and manipulative demands of technological problem solving. Despite the research on design and problem solving, we still do not know how children learn specific ideas about design, trade-offs, constraints, redundancy, etc. The work from England and Canada can illuminate what we are trying to do in America, but this research needs to be adapted and new research needs to be initiated.

Steven Levy If 1995 was The "Year of the Internet" (Newsweek, Jan. 1, 1996), for educators it is quickly becoming the era of information-on-demand and collaboration-at-a-distance. Among the Internet's many resources is the World Wide Web, a global network of information "servers" provided by individuals, organizations, businesses, and federal agencies who are offering documents, data, images, and interactive sessions. For teachers, students, and parents, this means access to information not in textbooks or the local library, fast-breaking news, ideas for lessons and activities, and, best of all, collaboration with others on projects of mutual interest. Here we provide an annotated listing of Web resources relating to environmental education. Though not an exhaustive list of what is available, these sites represent the range of resources, and they are excellent places to begin your own journey through the web of interconnected sites.

The main benefit of creating the global classroom is that it can lead to the global school system with each school connected through central equipment at the school , to a world of resources, events and cultures. Teachers familiar with the World Wide Web can bring their own resources to the system and benefit from those brought by others. Standard and innovative curriculum units can be developed or enhanced through the Internet, and the discoveries made in the classroom can be shared with all system users. The Internet is a powerful medium for experiential learning. The effective classroom integration of the full range of on-line technology into daily learning will enhance students' productivity and skills. The Global Classroom project will :

An Introduction to the Framework Summer Institute
Staff Teaching for Understanding Educators who wish a practical, systematic overview of each element of the TfU framework. All the strands of Project Zero's research that are presented at the Summer Institute can be used to support understanding, but the Teaching for Understanding Framework (TfU) is a comprehensive model designed specifically for that purpose. TfU is a lens that guides educators' decisions so that their instruction will better nurture their students' development of flexible disciplinary understanding. In this course, participants will explore each element of TfU: generative topics, understanding goals, performances of understanding, and ongoing assessment. We'll introduce the educational concerns that each element addresses and the criteria that distinguish each element from its near neighbors in other pedagogical models. In small groups, participants will identify the characteristics of TfU in video and narrative examples and begin to use each element themselves. The course will help to clarify the fundamentals and potential of this powerful tool. SU
