History and Government
History:
Political stability proved elusive as, during the next 20 years, the country was overtaken by a succession of military coups along with frequent impositions of martial law and states of emergency. However, since the beginning of the 1990s, civilians have controlled the Government. The main political parties, the Awami League and the Bangladesh National Party (BNP, Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Dal

Government: After 16 years of presidential government, punctuated by spells of martial law, Bangladesh reverted to its original parliamentary system in August 1992 when constitutional amendments were approved by national referendum. Three hundred of the 330-member Jatiya Sangsad (parliament) are elected by adult suffrage; the remaining 30 seats are reserved for women and are selected by the other members. November 10, 2001 Joint Statement for the Visit of Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf to New York
President George W. Bush and President Pervez Musharraf met in New York today and reaffirmed the strength and vitality of the bilateral relationship between Pakistan and the United States. The two Presidents expressed the conviction that the global coalition against terrorism is essential for the elimination of the Taliban regime and the Al-Qaida network and those who harbor them. President Musharraf welcomed the clear commitments expressed by President Bush to continued active United States engagement in Pakistan and the entire South Asian sub-continent. President Bush and President Musharraf reaffirmed the benefits of 50 years of friendship and close cooperation between Pakistan and the United States and recalled the pivotal role of the Pakistan-U.S. alliance in the triumph of the free world at the end of the cold war. They welcomed the revival of this longstanding partnership and expressed their conviction that it would constitute a vital element in the construction of a durable structure of peace, stability, economic growth and enhanced prosperity at the regional and global level. They also held wide-ranging discussions on the current anti-terrorism campaign and exchanged views on bilateral, regional, and international issues.

Tell me when this page is updated SOUTH ASIAN HISTORY History of the Mughals in the Indian Subcontinent The Rise and Fall of the Mughals A Revaluation of their Role in Indian History No period in Indian history has drawn as much attention and scholarly research as has the period in Indian history that corresponds with Mughal rule. Western and many Indian historians alike have focused on the reign of the Mughals almost to the point of total neglect and exclusion of other periods in Indian history. In-depth investigation of other ruling dynasties whether subordinate to the Mughals (such as the lesser-known Rajputs or Bundelkhandis) or preceding them (such as the Parmars, Kakathiyas, or Sharqis) or their southern contemporaries (such as Tamil Nadu's Pandyas) has rarely attracted the scholarly attention of influential historians, and often their role in Indian history has been seen as peripheral to that of the Mughals, or their contribution to Indian civilization seen as tangential and marginal. Journalists, art critics and popular historians have been particularly infected by such biases, and even highly respected art critics and social scientists have written quite dismissively of India's regional kingdoms that preceded Mughal rule or rose in the wake of it's precipitous decline.

From L to R: UT faculty member Kamran Ali and
invited speakers Omar Qureshi and Samina Choonara.
The symposium featured a unique combination of writers, activists and scholars from Pakistan, the United States and Europe, who came together to discuss their work in and on regional Pakistani languages and ethnic cultures such as Sindhi, Baluchi, Pashto, Bangla and Punjabi. To begin, Kathryn Hansen, Director of the Center for Asian Studies, and Kamran Asdar Ali, Assistant Professor of Anthropology, stated their motivations for organizing this symposium. They noted that too often in the Western academy the study of Pakistan is centered upon the study of Urdu literary culture. However, as the October 2002 elections demonstrated, ethnicity retains a pivotal role in Pakistani culture and politics. Therefore, a deeper understanding of Pakistani culture and society in all its complexity and layers is called for, and is perhaps more necessary now than ever before. Another panel featured Shelley Feldman (Associate Professor, Sociology, Cornell University) and Saadia Toor (Ph.D. Candidate, Sociology, Cornell University), who discussed the language politics of Bangla in East and West Pakistan from 1947 to 1971. Shelley Feldman argued that historical erasure is an active process, and that Bangladesh has been actively forgotten in modern Pakistan.

Organization - Who We Are, What We Do
Purpose Accomplishments Board of Directors • Purpose "Around the world, wherever human rights are violated, women and girls suffer the most." - Margaret A. Schuler, President, WLDI In both industrialized and developing countries, women are more likely than men to live in poverty, endure low status within the family, be refugees, migrate in search of work, suffer from poor health and nutrition and be solely responsible for the maintenance and care of children. Even worse, women and girls are increasingly victims of state-sponsored or condoned violence and repression. Female infanticide, honor killings, acid attacks, female genital mutilation, widow abuse, sexual slavery and child marriage are still practiced in too many parts of the world. And mass rape has become a common terror tactic in ethnic cleansing campaigns. In many nations, the legal systems perpetuate sex bias. Often laws and customs openly discriminate against women. Women are routinely denied their most basic economic, social, cultural, civil and political rights. Unfortunately, women who are the subject of violence and discrimination often have no idea what rights they have, or they don't know any effective methods to enforce those rights. In short, they lack the knowledge or the skills to advocate for themselves.
