Brands can't afford to ignore ethnic markets
Alf Nucifora As one who came to the United States as an immigrant and chose it as his new home, I can say, admittedly with some bias, that this is the greatest country in the world. Most Americans would echo that sentiment. But, the abundant degree of self-belief in American superiority is both a strength and a weakness.

Contact Us Rights Group: 461 Pakistani Women Killed ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (AP) December 11, 2002 Pakistan's main human rights body said Wednesday that at least 461 women have been killed by family members in so-called "honor killings'' this year, an increase from the year before. In such killings, women are murdered to protect the "family honor'' for immoral behavior ranging from sex outside marriage, dating, talking to men, being raped or even cooking poorly. The 2002 figure is up from about 372 honor killings the year before and demonstrates the need for increased protection for women in Pakistan, the private Human Rights Commission of Pakistan said. The group said it also shows an apparent lack of commitment to fight the practice by Pakistan's military government, which had made repeated promises to improve women's right in this poor country of 145 million people.

and the American Immigration Law Foundation Local: General Local: Specific Rumor: Pakistan Removed From List Of 25 Blacklisted Countries!
From Daily Khabrain (Daily News)
January 15, 2003 Many Pakistanis waiting in line for registration, upon hearing from one another that Pakistan has been cleared from the list of 20 countries whose citizens were required to register by the 15th, left for home without registering. While this information has not been confirmed and still has only the status of a rumor, some Pakistani immigrants took their countrymen's words and left. What awaits them is still open for uneasy speculation. The New York desk of the Daily Khabrain (Daily News) reported that the registrations of Pakistanis started on the 13 th of January 2003. Pakistanis could be seen congregating in front of INS offices in Los Angeles, Houston, and New York. According to the BBC, a rumor suddenly spread through the sky, using a Pakistani newspaper report as its foundation, that American officials had spoken to Pakistani Foreign Minister Mian Khurshid Mahmud Kasuri and reassured him that Pakistan would be removed from the list of nations whose residents are being mandated to register at the INS. As soon as this information became public, dozens of Pakistanis left without registering, stating that until the matter is cleared up they will not register. The BBC also said that very few people in New York and elsewhere registered as a result of this rumor.
