The most well known is Guam, an American territory and gateway to the other island groups. The others islands, Pohnpei, Chuuk (Truk), Kosrae and Yap elected to join a federal government known as the Federated States of Micronesia with headquarters in Pohnpei. Palau and the Marshall Islands voted to remain independent and have established autonomous governments. Saipan, Rota and Tinian became the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (commonly referred to as the Marianas or Northern Marianas) with Saipan the capital. About us
Send me a Brochure Tripbuilder (Shopping Cart) Send me a Quotation ... Pacific News Member of Micronesia About the Country People The whole of Micronesia has less than 200,000 people. They are a multi-cultural population of Filipinos, Caucasians, Chinese and native Chamorros, the Chamorros being the largest group. An ancient sea-faring race, the Chamorros are related to the Polynesians and believed to have arrived in about 2,000 BC from Indonesia and Malaysia. Today, English is the official language, though Japanese is widely spoken and local dialects are based on Chamorro. History The great Spanish sailor Ferdinand Magellan sailed through the Micronesian islands in his world circumnavigation in 1521. He was followed by whalers and Spanish missionaries in the 1600s. Four colonial powers have used them as provision ports on trade routes between continents and at the end of World War 2, the USA took over their administration. Nature The Micronesian islands vary in size, appearance and topography. The inhabited parts vary from villages with no cars or electricity, to the sophisticated resorts of Guam and Saipan.

By the end of the year, students in Saipan will be walking down the halls of three new schools. Five hundred students are already attending Kagman High School, which opened on January 14, 2002, and is the home of the Ayuyu. According to public school system officials, construction of Koblerville High School and Kagman Junior High School is on schedule and should be completed soon. Both schools have anticipated opening dates of August 2002. The Republic of Palau

TEEN SUICIDE

Are We Losing Our Precious Resources
By Harvey Lee While in Saipan, we went to the local dive shop to catch up with old friends. The owner greeted us: "Hi, how are you?" "Fine," I replied. "What’s new in Saipan?" The owner said, "By the way, did you know , the Chuukese dive master?" "Yeah."
"He committed suicide," she said. "His girlfriend left him and the next day they found him dead in his apartment. He hung himself."

      Abstract:
Economic and political changes in Palau in the last two decades have led to a rapid increase in the numbers of foreign workers. At current levels of growth, Palauans could become a minority in their own country. We examine the global processes that have produced this phenomenon and discuss their social and cultural impacts on Palau. In doing so we examine ways the meanings of work in Palau are understood, and how these are changing. We conclude that a new distinctly Palauan system of occupations is emerging that is neither traditional nor purely western and that is widely shared between Palauans and non-Palauans.

August 1999 "The first shot, Bravo, the largest single nuclear explosion conducted by the
United States, with a destructive capability more than one thousand times that of the Hiroshima bomb, was detonated on 1 March 1954.
"...To this day, peoples of Rongelap, Bikini, Enewetak,
and many in the Marshall Islands continue to suffer from
cancer, miscarriages, and tumors."
In the book, Blood on their Banner: Nationalist Struggles in the South Pacific , David Robie writes, the more than 2000 islands of Micronesia have played a vital role in modern strategic history. Japanese aircraft launched their attack on Peal Harbor from Micronesia, plunging the United States into the Second World War. And it was from Tinian Island in western Micronesia that the Enola Gay took off with its deadly weapons for the attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki which ended the war and ushered in the nuclear age. The islands of Micronesia have been used by Washington ever since as pawns to enhance its strategic posture (Robie, ibid, p.142).

HISTORY
The National Association for Court Management (NACM) Core Competency Curriculum Guidelines flow from a process begun in 1990 when NACM undertook a Delphi survey of all its members to evaluate its goals, priorities, and services. Survey results reported to the NACM Annual Conference in 1991 and in the Fall, 1991, issue of The Court Manager clearly indicated that the nation’s trial court managers wanted more national programs and programs that were:
  • Accessible and affordable Relevant to daily practice Reflective of the full range of court manager responsibilities
NACM responded by adding regional Mid Year Conferences in the spring to complement their Summer Annual Conferences and by initiating planning toward a multi-year education and professional development action plan. Among many initiatives, a special NACM Professional Development Advisory Committee (NACM/PDAC) study committee was formed in 1992.

About Yap Yap is the most traditional of all the Micronesian Islands. From the moment you step off the plane you will be immersed in two worlds that peacefully coexist in this tropical wonderland. Men wearing traditional thuus and women in lava lava's standing next to a visitor in his best designer tropical wear. Visitors are asked to understand and respect this culture. The people of Yap are warm and friendly but little shy. Women are requested to refrain from wearing "short shorts" or swim suites in town and to keep their thighs covered. Keep in mind that all property in Yap is privately owned and you should ask permission to enter a village or enjoy one of the secluded beaches. Your hotel can arrange land tours, snorkeling, kayaking or other activities and should provide a guide to accompany you. The History of Yap Anthropological theories suggest that Yap was settled over 3,500 years ago by seagoing voyagers migrating eastward in primitive log like canoes from either Indonesia or the Philippines. The ancient Yapese empire was a large, powerful and highly organized society. At the empires peak, the central islands of Wa'ab may have had a population of more than 50,000. Huge meeting houses, stone amphitheaters and Men's Houses dotted the shorelines. Inland majestic family houses sat atop raised stone platforms called "dayif," and their thatched peak roofs jutted out between coconut palms over an intricate winding network of stone paths.
