This story is expanded from the print version.

Paleobotany continues to produce a wealth of anatomical, morphological, and systematic studies as well as floristic descriptions, all of which have always been at the heart of the discipline. Significant this year is the publication of Fossil Flora and Stratigraphy of the Florissant Formation, Colorado (Evanoff and others, 2001, Denver Museum of Nature and Science). This volume updates varied aspects of this important Tertiary site, including megafossils, pollen, and wood (papers by E. Leopold and S. Clay-Poole, F. Wingate and D. Nichols, S. Manchester, E. Wheeler) as well as stratigraphy, paleoclimate, and paleoelevation interpretations (E. Evanoff and others, K. Gregory-Wodzicki, H. Meyer). In 2001, paleobotany continued to expand its traditional boundaries to include studies integrating data from fossil plants in order to understand extinction events, past communities, and paleoclimate. Ancient carbon cycles and carbon-dioxide levels
Fossil plant data are proving to be invaluable for estimating past carbon-dioxide levels and providing insights on the functioning of ancient carbon cycles. Paleontological data for the diversity of marine animals and land plants was integrated elegantly with a concurrent measure of stable carbon-isotope fractionation for the last 400 million years (D.H. Rothman

ABAXIAL

Abaxial means being located on the side away from the axis . The abaxial surface of a leaf is its underside.
ABSCISIC ACID

Abscisic acid is a plant hormone that inhibits growth, causes the abscission of leaves, induces dormancy, closes stomata, and triggers other phenomena in response to adverse conditions. ABSCISSION Abscission is the normal separation of a leaf , fruit, or flower from a plant. Abscisic acid is the plant hormone involved in abscission. ABSCISSION ZONE The abscission zone is the area at the base of leaf's petiole, a fruit stalk, or a branch in which the separation (abscission) layer develops. The disintegration of this layer causes a leaf , fruit, or flower to fall from a plant. Abscisic acid is the plant hormone involved in this process. ACICULAR Acicular means needle-like (for example, pine needles are acicular).

    http://www2.worldbook.com/features/dinosaurs/html/paleobotany.htm
Paleobotany (PAY lee oh BAHT uh nee), is the study of ancient plants. Paleobotany is a branch of paleontology, the study of ancient plants, animals, and other organisms. Specialists called paleobotanists investigate the evolution of plant life and the origins and relationships of plant groups. They also examine the link between vegetation and the earth's changing climate. Paleobotany includes the study of such simple organisms as ancient algae, fungi, and bacteria. In addition, it involves searching for the earliest evidence of life in rocks more than 3 billion years old.
    Interpreting earth's history
Paleobotanists interpret the earth's history by examining plant fossils. These fossils have been preserved in sedimentary rocks (rocks formed from deposits laid down by ancient rivers, lakes, and seas). Paleobotanists have found the earliest land plants in sedimentary rocks that are more than 430 million years old. Remains of early forests are abundant in rocks 350 million years old. The ancestors of all major groups of land plants lived in these forests. Today, the most numerous plants on earth are angiosperms (flowering plants). Paleobotanists have discovered that the first angiosperms appeared about 140 million years ago, during the age of the dinosaurs.
Paleobotanists study the features that plants have developed to survive in their environment. These scientists are thus able to describe the type of climate that existed millions of years ago. Paleobotany contributes to an understanding of how and why the earth's climate changes. This understanding is important in predicting the changes in climate that humans may cause through the greenhouse effect (a gradual warming of the earth's surface).

    Faculty: Robyn J. Burnham
Paleobotany is concerned with the evolutionary and environmental history of plants through the course of geological time. At Michigan, museum research in this area started in 1929 with appointment of Chester A. Arnold as a Museum of Paleontology curator and Botany professor. Professor Arnold was succeeded by James A. Doyle, Charles B. Beck, professor emeritus , and Robyn J. Burnham. Professor Burnham is curator of paleobotany in the Museum of Paleontology and professor of paleobotany in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. Paleobotanical collections at the University of Michigan contain approximately 15,000 individually catalogued specimens. This estimate is necessarily conservative because an individual specimen may contain more than one leaf, stem, flower, or fruit impression. The collections are strong in Paleozoic vascular plants, especially pteridophytes, progymnosperms such as Archaeopteris , and gymnosperms. These specimens document the rise of seed plants, and early increases in complexity of water- and nutrient-conducting tissues that allowed diversification of the first arborescent (tree-like) growth forms. Early Cretaceous angiosperms, the earliest flowering plants, are also well represented by isolated leaves and dispersed cuticle remains recovered from sediments deposited well before the time when larger portions of these plants are preserved intact. The collections also include important holdings of Cenozoic ferns and angiosperms from the western United States. Among algal groups, we have one of the world's largest collections of Paleozoic receptaculitids, and the only such collection for which most specimens have associated data on field orientation (critical for assessing the anatomy and growth mode of this problematic group).

Summary: "This Version 2.2 of the Plant Fossil Record (PFR2.2) database includes descriptions and occurrences of many thousands of extinct plants. For the first time modern genera with fossil species are included in the desription database. Names, places and ages can be searched and the occurrences are instantly plotted on a global map. Patterns of migration and evolution through geological time can be clearly examined to help better understand the history of climatic and environmental change." Searches are case-insensitive; by default, any string in a field that contains a term renders that record a match. For example, asking for "margin" will match "Margin," "marginal," " albomarginata ," and so forth. You can also ask that terms be matched in their entirety. Prior to searching, characters that are neither numbers or letters are stripped away, and single-character terms discarded (except for catalog number). Terms are and-ed together in the search. Matches are presented in alphabetical order by scientific name, unless you request sorting by locality. By default, the taxon name and abbreviated locality are presented, along with a hyperlink to the fully expanded data. This offers flexibility for rapid screening, but for final output you may wish to use "expanded data format." Further details about the data appear below.
