Ask an Expert: Paleontology
CLN's "Ask an Expert" page has about 100 links to specialists in the field who can serve as a valuable source of curricular expertise for both students and teachers. Questions/answers on Paleontology may be found in our "All Subjects" section at the top of the page, the "Science" section (see General Science), as well as the general "Reference" section.

G eneral P aleontology R eturn to B ooks is a truly magnificent sourcebook - an illustrated Who's Who of prehistoric life. With entries for more than 600 species, each arranged in its correct evolutionary sequence, the book presents a panorama of enormous diversity, from predatory dinosaurs to primitive amphibians, from giant armored fish to woolly mammoths, saber-tooth tigers and dire wolves. The Science Times Book of Fossils and... The Science Times Book of Fossils and Evolution compiles some of the best articles from the prestigious Science Times section of the New York Times . Topics include the origin of life, the evolution of "bigness," and human ancestry. Discovering Fossils : How to Find and... A complete beginners guide to fossil collecting including where to search for fossils, how to look for them, and how to collect and preserve ones finds. Includes practical advice on what to wear and which tools to carry. There is also an illustrated section on the identification of common fossils. Trilobites Long before dinosaurs roamed the earth, there were trilobitesone of the most striking animals to populate prehistoric seas and whose fossils are favorites among collectors today. This book provides details on the anatomy, classification, and presumed habits of these long-extinct creatures and is embellished by 229 exquisitely detailed halftones and 19 line drawings.

BIBLIOGRAPHY OF GENERAL WORKS IN MAMMALOGY
This bibliography is designed to guide beginning students in mammalogy to literature in specific areas. The works included are primarily monographic and of wide coverage. It is also a work in progress; I add new works and update editions when any such come to my attention. Note: This list has been compiled by scouring through curatorial offices and the library in the Department of Mammalogy at the American Museum of Natural History. It has been updated by perusing the new main library books borrowed by curators. I note the Museum's call number or the Library of Congress number on the back of the title page; these are not always the same, and I prefer the Museum Library's number. Several titles are taken from publisher's fliers and Choice cards; the pagination is not always correct for books that are yet to be issued, and they usually end in suspiciously round numbers. To recommend inclusion of additional works or to correct listings, please notify John H. Wahlert

Text: Prothero, Bringing Fossils to Life. This course will have an unusual, two-part organization. One lecture each week will be devoted to topics related to principles and problems in paleontology such as those discussed in the first ten chapters of the text. The remaining lectures will be devoted to systematic coverage of invertebrate fossils, and labs will be devoted to work on lab assignments that focus on the identification of fossils. You may wish to keep lecture notes for the two different types of topics in separate notebooks or separate sections of a notebook. Reading assignments are to be completed by the first class of the week indicated. Students will be responsible for all material covered in lecture and in reading assignments. The 3 one-hour exams will be worth 100 points each, and the final exam will be worth 200 points toward the final grade. There will be a lab final worth 50 points, a lab notebook worth 50 points and lab quizzes and exercises worth a total of 100 points. Specimens will be available in the lab during the scheduled lab time, and some selected specimens will be available in the lab throughout the week during which that group is being studied. There will be a quiz on each group following the week scheduled for its study in lab. Specimens will no longer be available after the quiz on that taxonomic group. Lab notebooks will include (minimally) assigned specimen drawings for each group. Drawings should be completed weekly and placed in the notebook. Random checks will be made throughout the semester, and completed notebooks will be due at the lab exam.

PALEONTOLOGY ON THE WORLD-WIDE WEB
STEVEN H. SCHIMMRICH
INTRODUCTION
THE EXPLOSIVE growth of the world-wide web, a vast network of interconnected computers which allows you to seamlessly access multimedia information (text, images, and binary files) from servers anywhere in the world, has resulted in a large amount of information useful to K-16 teachers. The problem is finding this information and being sure it's correct (almost anyone can create a web page). This paper is an attempt to bring some order to the chaos and lists many paleontology resources on the web which may be of interest to K-16 students and instructors along with some tips on how these resources may be used in a classroom setting.
LEARNING FROM FOSSILS
Many fossils are aesthetically pleasing and some, such as dinosaurs, easily excite our imaginations but why should we study fossils? What can we learn from them? Paleontology is a multidisciplinary science incorporating biology, geology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics. Learning about how paleontologists practice the science of paleontology teaches students about the science in general. Paleontologists routinely utilize field methods, laboratory techniques, computers analyses, mathematics, and theoretical models in their research. The mass media often reports on the latest ideas regarding global warming or global cooling. Such climatic shifts will have a great effect on our future but how do we know if the earth is warming up or cooling down? What can tell us about the climate in the past? Paleontologists study several types of plant and animal microfossils to provide answers to these questions.

  • e-fossils - We are fanatical fossil collectors who spend most of our lives in gravel pits and quarries (much to our wives' consternation!). We have decided it is about time to display some of the fossils we unearth and at the same time show how we extract and prepare them.
