The Department of Biological Sciences offers more than 100 courses to undergraduate students with areas of concentration in Animal Biology, Cell Biotechnology, Environmental Biology, Evolutionary Biology, Microbiology, Molecular Genetics, Physiology and Developmental Biology, and Plant Biology. These areas of concentration may be pursued through either an honors or specialization program within the Department. In collaboration with other departments, we also offer honors and specialization programs in Bioinformatics, Cell Biology, Immunology and Infection, Marine Science, and Paleontology. General program students in the Faculty of Science may choose from our rich selection of courses to pursue a major in biology.
The pages in this part of our web site offer more information about all the above programs of study. You should also consult the University of Alberta calendar or the Student Services office located at CW 312, Biological Sciences Building, for further information, or you may consult an advisor in your area of interest
I encourage you to consider one or more of the many facets of biology for serious study in your undergraduate years. The recent exciting growth in all areas of our science touches all parts of society and opportunities for graduates with a solid understanding of biology are numerous, highly varied, and wide reaching.

The Dinosauria:
Truth is Stranger than Fiction
Dinosaurs occupy a vaunted niche in the public mind; the very word conjures up images of gargantuan, now-defunct beasts that ruled the Earth long ago, holding a reign of terror for some 160 million years, and then mysteriously vanishing with only their titanic bones as evidence of their existence. "Dinosaur" reaches deep into our psyche and drags out nightmares from culturally-embedded monster myths. What is the truth about dinosaurs that underlies the popular awe and mystique that shrouds them? What does modern science have to say about the dinosaurs? Are they truly obsolete, long-extinct relics of a more primitive and experimental stage in the history of life, or is there more to the Dinosauria than meets the eye? Dinosaurs are animals that evolved into many sizes and shapes. Dinosaurs were and are quite diverse, and often one person will think of an animal like a long-necked sauropod, while another person will think of a large, fierce meat-eater like Tyrannosaurus rex . It should be clear then that the term "dinosaurs", or the scientific version "Dinosauria", is describing a diverse group of animals with widely different modes of living. The term was invented by

    General Invertebrates Department General Composition
The General Invertebrates Collection is worldwide in scope, with emphasis on localities in the Eastern and Gulf Coasts of the United States. The collection contains dry and alcohol-preserved specimens representing 14 phyla which includes Protozoa, Porifera, Cnidaria, Platyhelminthes, Gastrotricha, Rotifera, Nemata, Nematomorpha, Annelida, Arthropoda, Bryozoa, Brachiopoda, and Echinodermata. The systematically arranged collection contains 18,000 lots, about evenly divided between dry, alcohol-preserved, and prepared slides of specimens. Additionally, approximately 7,500 uncatalogued, unarranged alcohol-preserved lots document more recent collections by Academy researchers and their colleagues. The collection is strong in the arthropod class Crustacea, particularly the Decapoda, and in the phylum Annelida, particularly the classes Polychaeta and Hirudinoidea. Important taxonomically restricted collections within the overall collections are:

The Geology Wing is organized according to the geologic time scale. If you wish to begin browsing now, click on any division of the time scale below You might wish to start in the Cenozoic Era (65 million years ago to the present) and work back through time, or start with Hadean time (4.5 to 3.8 billion years ago) and journey forward to the present day. No matter "when" you start, don't forget to stop along the way to learn about the stratigraphy, ancient life, fossil localities, and tectonics of the various time periods. Here are three links that can help to speed your journey:

    PALEONTOLOGY.
The assistance afforded us by specialists in this branch of geology during the second year of the work of the Survey was not only continued but greatly increased during the year that has just closed. In this, as in our topographic work, we are under renewed obligations to the United States Geological Survey. In reply to a request for their assistance in this line of work, I received a letter from the Director, promising full co-operation, and in the work of the whole year the promptness of the determinations and replies to inquiries by every member of the Survey with whom we have had correspondence have been of greatest value to us. The materials sent were fossils of various kinds, the identification of which were necessary for the correct determination of the geological age of the beds from which they were taken, but in some instances more detailed work was necessary. The collections made by Professor Cummins, during the field season of 1890, contained a large number of new Nautiloid forms, and they were sent to Professor Alpheus Hyatt for study and description. His report, with illustrations and descriptions of the new forms, taken together with that accompanying the Second Annual Report, contains a far larger number of species than have been gotten together in any publication previously.
