Among one of the most important changes the Palestinian social structure encountered, was the recognition of the role of the Palestinian woman., Palestinian women presented progressive achievements and sacrifices which firmly established their place in society and status -amongst other social issues- in the struggle against Zionism and occupation. This has considerably challenged ways of thinking which traditionally refused their rights to express their national and social identity. The changing role of women is determined by their participation in resistance and political life, and increased education and employment. Besides the political struggle, women's role in the social movement is of major importance, reflected in the huge amount of women's organizations dealing with all aspects of life. They make up a considerable part of Palestinian civil society. In August 1994, Palestinian women held a conference and released a draft document to be included in the Palestinian constitution (whenever it gets implemented) guaranteeing political, social, economic and cultural rights for women based on the principle of ideological and individual pluralism and of the respect for the individual and social freedom. The Palestinian Declaration of Independence (1988) had already outlined that "Governance will be based on principles of social justice, equality and non-discrimination in public rights of men or women..."

Palestine, TX 75801
OTHER AWARDS: Texas Historical Marker; Registry of National Historic Places
HISTORIC SIGNIFICANCE: The 1915 Jacobean-Tudor style three story school building of 36,000 square feet is representative of schools built in the World War I Era. It was "hygienically, architecturally and mechanically correct." The exterior was embellished with cut limestone coping and trim with tile and decorative brick panels. It has flattened arches, lancet windows, and roof pediments with crenellations. Floors were of hardwood, and walls of cement plaster with chair, picture, and stairway hand rails. The building has two main and two secondary entrances. Classes began in Fall 1916 and it remained a high school until 1939 when it became Palestine Junior High School. Renamed John H. Reagan Junior School in 1955, from 1966 to 1976 it was an elementary school.
HOUSE HISTORY: The citizens of Palestine voted a $100,000 bond issue for building the new high school. Architects Marshall R. Sanguinet and Carl Gordon Staats of Ft. Worth designed the structure and A. W. Flynt of Fort Worth constructed the building. Local contractors did the plumbing, heating, ventilation and electrical wiring with home labor was used throughout.

Exhibits Highlights From Exhibitions On View Now The Railroad Room
The Fire Department Room This room has been developed by members of the Palestine Fire Department. It shows the history of local firefighters. The first hydrant, on display, was patented in the 1800's and was used in Palestine at the intersection of Spencer and Lacy Streets from 1900-1992. The glass fire grenades (an early fire extinguisher) are always of interest to the Museum visitors. The Reagan Campbell Room John H. Reagan was originally from Tennessee, but came to Palestine as a young man. He was a local lawyer and judge, served in the United States Congress and Senate, served as the chairman of the first Texas Railroad Commission. While in Congress, he introduced the bill establishing the Interstate Commerce Commission. Perhaps he is most famous for having served as Postmaster General for the Confederacy under President Jefferson Davis. The dining table in this room was built for the Reagan's in 1891 by convicts at the Rusk State Penitentiary, and is inlaid with 996,000 pieces of wood. The child's rocking chair was built for a Reagan grandchild by one of the family's slaves. The Main Floor Hallway The main floor hallway has a number of cases making up what is designated as the "Legends and Legacies" exhibit. This exhibit was designed to tell the early history of Anderson County and Palestine. The exhibit opened in March of 1996 in celebration of the sesquicentennial of Anderson County. Each case addresses a different facet of the country's early history.
