Optus pushes broadband via satellite in NZ
28th January , 2003 Optus is seeking further opportunities in New Zealand utilising its successful broadband satellite roll out in Australia. Optus already provides broadcasting, data and radio services to a number of New Zealand companies. Optus is looking to expand its reach and is part of a consortium that is participating in a tender for the New Zealand Government. Chris Hancock, Managing Director Optus Wholesale said, "There is a growing demand to deliver internet and data via satellite. With the use of VSAT services, Optus provides governments and businesses with access to high-speed internet and data services regardless of location." "Geography is a important factor in communication infrastructure, and in New Zealand's geography makes it an ideal place to use satellite communication services. Optus can help to satisfy remote regions communications needs such as internet access via its satellites," he said. "Optus is experienced in providing satellite services to remote locations - and last year, we received the Rural/Regional Telecommunications Award at the CommsWorld Telcom Awards for our superior rural satellite services.

Background Information on Papua New Guinea
Geography
Papua New Guinea (PNG) lies just south of the equator and to the north of Australia. It is the last of a string of islands spilling down from South-East Asia into the Pacific and could be said to form a transition zone between the two areas. PNG occupies the eastern end of the island of New Guinea. In addition, there is a collection of islands, some rather large, around the main island mass (The country comprises over 600 islands, but 85 per cent of its mass is mainland).

OVERVIEW
The South Pacific nation of Papua New Guinea (PNG) is situated in the eastern half of the world's second largest island, New Guinea. Of the island's total land area of 46.2 million hectares some 78% or 36.125 million hectares is comprised of forests (Saulei, 1997). Much of PNG is dominated by lowland rainforests which are home to an array of diverse flora and fauna (Lamb, 1991). In elevations of about 1000 metres, a transition from lowland rainforest to montane forest is noticeable and in even higher areas (above 300 metres) alpine forests can be found (ibid). Mangroves are also found along the coastal areas of this island nation. See map below. PNG's forests are classified as being part of Malesia which includes the nations of Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines and the Solomon Islands. However, despite being part of Malesia, PNG's forests are noted for their relatively rare stands of Dipterocarp species . The forests have canopy heights of over 30 metres with taller emergents being over 50 metres. Palms and vines are also present in PNG's forests (Lamb, 1991). As previously noted, the total forested area in PNG is 36.125 million hectares; of this, some 15 million hectares are accessible and therefore are a potential source for harvesting (Saulei, 1997). In fact, much of these areas have already been felled for agriculture, infrastructure, the mining of oil exploration and logging operations (ibid). Even though PNG's forest area is not as great as its neighbours (namely Indonesia), the country has a large forest area per capita. For example, PNG has 4.5 hectares per capita while Indonesia has 0.5 hectares per capita (Lamb, 1991). Similarly, the timber resource per capita is also high with figures for PNG holding at 586 cubic metres per capita while estimates for Indonesia suggest 97 cubic metres per capita (ibid). Such high figures, while indicative of virgin stands and timber abundance, can appear lucrative to opportunist logging companies.

    Facts About Rainforests
    General Information:
    • Approximately 8% of the earth's land surface is tropical rainforest. The rainforests form a green band around the equator. Rainforests are the richest regions on earth in terms of their diversity of life. The tropical rainforests house 40 to 50% of the world's plant and animal species. One-half of all growing wood on earth is located in the tropical rainforests.
    General Information:
    • Up to two hundred different types of trees can be found growing in 2.5 acres of tropical rainforest. The intricate plant systems found in tropical rainforests support a great diversity of insect and animal life. Tropical rainforests remain a mystery to us - scientists have identified less than 20% of all the species which live there.
    General Information:
    • When a tropical forest is repeatedly cleared, the land loses its productivity and supports only the growth of coarse grasses and troublesome weeds. The tropical forests are being destroyed by cattle ranching, logging, road building, industry and relocating peasants who move to the forests.

Published: January 29, 2003 Harold Brookfield has written a book well worth the read. An Australian geographer, Brookfield draws on 40 yr of research experience in tropical agriculture and a talent for fine synthesis to provide us with an insightful and engaging volume. Exploring Agrodiversity, which is written in easy, fluid prose, examines the dynamics and implications of agricultural diversity among small holders in a range of tropical environments. Intended for a subgroup of geography and anthropology scholars, i.e., "cultural ecologists" or researchers who study rural livelihoods and environmental issues affecting traditional peoples, this work is also of relevance to scientists working in the fields of conservation ecology, agricultural and environmental sciences, and global land use and land cover change. Few scholars are as well positioned as Brookfield to write about dynamic diversity in traditional agricultural systems centered on the farmer and the farm. As a geographer, he is at ease exploring subjects ranging from pedoturbation to vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhiza or apomixis to quasiagnatic subclans, often with the bracing common sense born of long, deep experience in the field. He draws on concepts/approaches not only from his own discipline, i.e., landscape and environmental history, but also from anthropology, i.e., ethnography, and from ecology, i.e., dynamic nonequilibrium and resilience. In discussing tropical agriculture, Brookfield reaches back to pan-tropical research conducted in the 1930s as comfortably as others do to the 1960s, with a wonderful knack for extracting the germane and a clear delight at setting conventional wisdom on its ear.

    Geo 350 - Population Geography
Exercise 2 The Demographic Transition Theory Exercise
    Need:
You will need graph paper (or a graphing program) and a copy of the latest World Population Data Sheet to complete this exercise.
    Background:
There are many versions of the Demographic Transition Theory, but most of them agree that as countries develop their population characteristics undergo fundamental changes. They go through a period of transition when their birthrates are high and their growth rates are excessive. As development takes place, the birthrates decline and growth rates moderate.
Although the theory can only be adequately tested by following the population history of individual country after individual country, a surrogate test can be applied to groups of countries. The question asked is this: "Do countries with higher levels of development have lower birth rates?"
    Exercise:
A very crude measure of level of development is income. On the Data Sheet the income measure used is Per Capita Gross National Product. Your task will be to determine if birthrates tend to go down as income rises. This will be accomplished by graphically portraying some of the data and examining the graph for evidence supporting, or rejecting, the Demographic Transition Theory. One additional measure of development, a communication variable, is used as a test in the last graph. Label the axes of two separate graphs as follows:

ARCHAEOLOGICAL COLLECTIONS Our collections division is home to more than 500,000 documented objects, mainly from Oregon and Alaska, but also including a fine collection of western American Indian baskets and Papau-New Guinea artifacts.
Following the creation of the Museum in the 1935, the University began to receive gifts of Oregon and Northwest ethnographic materials. Faculty members in anthropology and in geography have added similar material. The Museum now holds the largest and most important collection of archaeological materials from Oregon.
Displayable ethnographic items from outside the United States include more than 900 from Africa, 700 from Asia, 600 from Oceania, 550 from Central America, and about 200 each from Philippines, Europe, and South America. The ethnographic textile catalog contains more than 200 total entries, with a series of complete costumes from eastern Europe and Southeast Asia as an important component.
