Rockin' In the Rainforest R ainforests provide us with oxygen, help maintain our climate, and give us essential foods and medicines. Rainforests have intense tropical sunlight, high temperatures, and almost constant rainfall. 7% of the world is covered in rainforest. More than 50% of the world's plant and animal species inhabit rainforest areas. Dozens of animal species a day become extinct. STAGE ONE The Cincinnati Zoo would like to expand their rainforest exhibit and need to learn more about animals who live in the rainforest. Your group will be scientists from the Cincinnati Zoo and go to one of the large rainforests in South America, Africa, or Southeast Asia. Pick a bird, mammal, amphibian, or insect to learn more about. Here is some information to look for: 1. Common and scientific name of animal. 2. Which rainforest does the animal live in? 3. Describe the animals' habitat. 4. What does the animal eat? 5. Find many descriptive details and a picture of the animal. 6. Is the animal an endangered species? 7. How does the animal protect itself?

About the Flight News Mission Log 12-hr Summary ... Contacts The Pacific Ocean: The Facts by Anna Mracek
Edited by Stephanie Nelson The Pacific Ocean is the largest ocean on the planet, covering one third of the entire surface of the Earth, or 165.384 million square kilometers. It is about 18 times the size of the United States of America. The accepted boundaries are the Bering Sea in the North, the Ross Sea in the South, the Strait of Magellan in the East and the Strait of Malacca in the West. The Pacific is often divided along the equator into the North and South Pacific, but the waters of these two halves circulate freely, as does the water in all of the world's oceans. The only real difference between these two halves is that the water circulates clockwise at the surface of the North Pacific and counter-clockwise in the South Pacific. The waters of the Pacific cover more area than all of the land mass of the world. Both the salinity (salt concentration) and the temperature of the water varies latitudinally. The waters around the equator are the warmest, reaching up to 29 degrees C (84 degrees F), and the least salty due to heavy precipitation. Near the polar regions the water can drop to temperatures near or even below freezing as the dissolved salt lowers the freezing point of the water. The Pacific creates five main climactic regions: the mid-latitude westerlies, the trades, the monsoon region, the typhoon region, and the doldrums. The mid-latitude westerlies occur in both hemispheres and bring marked changes in temperature with the seasons. The trade winds blow nearer the equator and account for the warm, constant temperatures year-round. The monsoon region is located in the far western region of the Pacific, between Australia and Japan, and is characterized by winds that change direction with the seasons. During the wet season the winds blow in large amounts of precipitation that cause flooding; during the dry, droughts are common. The typhoon region frequently exists in the shape of a large triangle from southern Japan to the central Philippines to eastern Micronesia. The typhoons generated here can have detrimental effect on a much larger area.

The Pacific Ocean Has Been Rowed!!! On Tuesday May 18th, 1999, Mick Bird began the third Leg of his solo voyage by rowing out to sea from Majoro Atoll in the Marshall Islands. Heading west towards Australia (or thereabouts) this is likely to be the toughest leg yet. Mick writes:
The first leg, California to Hawaii had 400 miles of headwind in the beginning. It took 3 tries to get past that. The second leg, Hawaii to the Marshall Islands, had several hundred miles of countercurrents in the beginning and the end. It wasn't fun going the wrong direction for days at a time. On this third leg, Marshall Islands to Australia, there are groups of islands, rocks and reefs in my way that are really going to challenge my navigational skills.

Source: Fritts 1988 Guam is strategically located in the Pacific. Because of the many cargos and planes passing through Guam, there is the possibility of the snake being introduced to other nearby islands and repeating the Guam disaster. Brown tree snakes have been found at military airports and naval cargo areas on Oahu, Wake Island, Kwajalein Atoll, Diego Garcia Atoll, Pohnpei and Saipan (Fritts 1988. See also number of sightings ). The main concern among the agencies working on the BTS population control programs on Guam is containment of the snake. As a result, tighter restrictions and inspections have been implemented to maintain the brown tree snake within Guam (Fritts 1988). Complete eradication is not realistic and so far, there is no sure solution or method in reducing the population of the brown tree snake. There are currently four main agencies on Guam working on snake control programs: USGS-Biological Resource Division, USDA-Wildlife Services, US Fish and Wildlife and Government of Guam-Division of Aquatic and Wildlife Resources. These programs include:

October 1997, Manila, Philippines The Status and Trends of the HIV/AIDS/STD Epidemics
in Asia and the Pacific 2. Status and trends of HIV/AIDS epidemics Epidemic patterns
The spread of HIV in this region began in the early to mid-1980s. Early infections could be traced to sexual contacts with infected persons residing outside the region, as well as some apparent further spread within the region itself. By the late 1980s, however, it had become evident that the transmission of HIV was increasing among several populations, in some cases with great velocity, and that two sets of factors strongly influenced the course of the emerging epidemics: participation in sex work and patterns of injecting drug use (IDU). By early 1997, South and South East Asia accounted for an estimated 5.2 million (23 percent) of the 22.6 million adults and children living with HIV in the world. About one-third of adults living with HIV in the region are female. As the HIV epidemic is still relatively recent, HIV disease, including AIDS, is only beginning to emerge and the associated needs for care are rising steeply. The estimated HIV prevalence in 15 to 49 year-old populations varies from zero (DPR Korea) to one per several thousand in most countries in the region, up to 2 to 3 percent in Cambodia, Myanmar and Thailand. From a regional perspective, the magnitude and short-term trends of HIV epidemics are largely dependent on the extent of ongoing epidemics in a few countries: Cambodia, India, Thailand, Myanmar and, because of their population size, Indonesia and China. With a population close to 1 billion and multiple epidemic foci, India projects the image of a complex epidemic, involving focal outbreaks among injecting drug users and extensive HIV spread among female sex workers and their clients in several regions.

(Five Letters from Araki Yasusada's Early Correspondence) In the poetry world, it is by now generally known that Doubled Flowering: From the Notebooks of Araki Yasusada is a fiction created by its "primary translator" Tosa Motokiyu, the pseudonym of a writer who requested, before his passing in London in 1996, that his legal identity never be revealed. The following pieces are taken from a group of twenty letters by Yasusada to an American pen-pal (or "pal-pen," as Yasusada puts it) named "Richard." A short time before his death, Motokiyu indicated to us that these letters, along with other materials comprising Yasusada's juvenilia, were to be excluded from Doubled Flowering Seven additional letters can be viewed at Jacket (issue #9), and numerous others, in print form, in the journals Prosodia and Untitled. Though not belonging to the series, another previously unpublished letter from Yasusada's youth can be found at The East Village Poetry Web Faux Press site), with commentary on it in an interview with Kent Johnson at

Status and Trends of the HIV/AIDS epidemics With a population in excess of 2.5 billion representing more than sixty percent of the world's population, the Asia-Pacific region has the potential to influence greatly the course and overall impact of the global HIV/AIDS pandemic. This report examines the status and trends of HIV infection and AIDS in countries in Asia and the Pacific, a region which, for the purpose of this analysis, stretches from and includes India on the west, to Japan and the other island nations in the Pacific, and from China in the north, to countries forming Oceania in the south and east. Epidemic patterns HIV epidemics in Asia and the Pacific are diverse, localized and have different trends over time (see Figure 1). Against this backdrop, however, it is becoming increasingly clear that the intensity of HIV epidemics associated with Sex work, affecting both female Sex workers and their clients, is primarily determined by the daily or weekly number of Sex partners (clients) per Sex worker, the frequency of use of commercial Sex by COUNTRIES WITH EPIDEMIC SPREAD CURRENT HIV EPIDEMIC TRENDS MAIN POPULATIONS AFFECTED PROJETED HIV EPIDEMIC TRENDS (3-5 YEARS) Australia Low and decreasing Low and stable MSM Decline Cambodia high and increasing rapidly high and increasing Individuals with high-and moderate-risk heterosexual behavior Sustained upward trend China low except inYunnan low and increasing IDU Increasing India Moderate and increasing (significant regional variation)
