FOR THE TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Sue Neff folds together her interest in paper crafts, history and architecture and comes up with origami architecture. Using techniques from the traditional Japanese art of paper folding, Neff makes two- and three-dimensional houses, churches and office buildings. Some may be re-creations of local landmarks or private homes. Others are buildings constructed purely from paper and imagination. Do it yourself The Origami Club of Pittsburgh meets the third Saturday of each month at the Squirrel Hill Branch of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh. Children's sessions will be held noon-1:30 p.m., adult sessions from 1:30-3 p.m. For more information or a schedu1e, contact the children's desk at the library, (412) 422-9841. Neff's interest in paper crafts dates back many years. "I was an elementary art teacher in Beaver County. Being an art teacher, I got involved in all kinds of paper crafts," she said. "Each year I would work with my students to help them make about 600 pop-up books. "I attended an origami convention in New York in 1988. I was so excited about what I learned that I wanted to start an origami club in Pittsburgh. We started (the Origami Club of Pittsburgh) with three people and now have over 30. We even have a subchapter of college students that meets at Carnegie Mellon University."

Abstract
An electronic performance support system (EPSS) uses technology to integrate procedures, information, and tools to help users perform a task. An EPSS gives its users the information the users need to perform a task as they actually perform the task. This paper describes the process, hardware, and software that our team used to create a simple origami EPSS. This paper also describes the rationale behind our design decisions and lists the lessons that we learned from this experience.
Introduction
This paper describes how our team developed a simple EPSS. An EPSS integrates procedures, information, and tools to help users as they perform a task (Gery, 1991). A typical training system trains a person away from the job before the person needs the training. An EPSS gives people the information they need when and where they need it on the job. Our EPSS had two purposes:
  • To demonstrate to visitors and prospective customers a simple EPSS, and

Home Archives Births Business ... Weather April 3, 2003 Features A Gathering of Women Mountain View Homemakers prepare for 40th anniversary By Tess Noel Baker Staff Writer They've been meeting for 40 years, this group of women. Together, they've given back to the community, expanded their minds and worked with their hands. They've done a little cooking and some eating along the way, too. They are The Mountain View Homemakers Club. They meet once a month in a member's home. Each woman brings a covered dish for lunch and her own place setting. Some are paper-plate and cup types. Others bring out the dinner dishes and dessert plates. After a call to order, made pleasant by the tinkle of a little gold bell, they sit and listen to a short meditation and prayer. A particularly moving recitation might even produce a few tears. From there, they form a line for a potluck meal. Every month is different, hostess Margaret Rouke, said. "Sometimes we have all salads, sometimes we have all desserts. It's not a planned thing, so it's always a good variety." In March, a medley of different casseroles, two types of deviled eggs, pasta salad and a pair of desserts graced the counter-tops. During lunch, discussions might cover travel abroad, health issues, family or church. From there, it's on to a business meeting, complete with minutes from the previous month and a treasurer's report.

What is the Origami Society of Toronto? How can I participate? In this section we'll try to answer many of the questions you might have about the group. And if the answer doesn't lie in this page, email us and we can correspond in person The Origami Society of Toronto is a gathering of Origami enthusiasts. Our meetings are held at the Japan Foundation Toronto and usually take place on the third Thursday of the month. Meetings begin at 7:00 PM and finish around 9:00 PM. See below for transit information and a location map Each monthly meeting features a theme and we fold from a prepared set of diagrams. The skill level ranges from Introductory to Advanced and members are on hand to help novice folders and also to challenge those experienced in the art of paper folding. At meetings we share books, folding techniques and information on resources. Being a part of the Origami Society is a great way to learn more about paper folding and to share your experiences and knowledge with others. The Origami Society is involved in community events around the city and has participated at venues such as Harbourfront Center, the Art Gallery of Ontario and the Royal Ontario Museum. Members are regularly invited by event organizers to teach, to demonstrate and to display their Origami. We invite you to visit us at a monthly meeting. If you would like to join, there is an annual fee of $25. This is to cover our use of the space at the Japan Foundation. Because members are responsible for bringing their own paper to meetings, quite often a wonderful variety of materials are brought out when we begin folding.

    ORIGAMI
Origami , the Japanese art of folding paper (Jap. oru , to fold, kami , paper.) Origami is a Japanese word and is universally adopted. It is important to note that origami is not exclusively a Japanese art. It has also developed independently in other parts of the world. The problem with origami is that it is often perceived as a childish pastime since adults are rarely seen doing it. In fact, origami is rated on the same level as other art and sculpture. In Japan an origami master is very highly regarded, even as a national treasure. It is not uncommon in Europe and USA to have origami displayed in museums alongside other art and sculpture. I hope this article will clear up some wrong pre-conceived ideas.
    History of Paper Folding
The origins of paper folding is not precisely known. Many origami historian have associated paper folding with the discovery of paper, apparently assuming that with the discovery of paper, it would be used for artistic or ceremonial reasons. Paper making was believed to have been discovered by a Chinese court official Tsai Lun around AD 100 in China. Prior to this papyrus first discovered by the Egyptians was also used as a writing material but this would not be considered just as we will not consider stones, wood or other materials that does not closely resemble the paper we used today for folding. Thus making the Chinese to be the first to fold paper. The main tradition of Chinese paper folding appears to be found within the tradition of ceremonies, funerals and prayers to the Gods.

Wearing a hat festooned with samples of her work, Ginger Brakke holds a delicate origami (folded paper) horse she has created. Brakke, a schoolteacher, has built a lucrative sideline with her demonstrations and performances of the ancient Japanese artform. She gives workshops and performances throughout the area. (Steve Griffin/The Salt Lake Tribune) BY KARYN HSIAO
    THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE

When Ginger Brakke is ready to tip her server, she never tucks smoothed dollar bills under the salt shaker.
Instead, she transforms the paper money into origami animals, flowers or even Harry Potter wands.
Brakke, of West Jordan, is known throughout Salt Lake City as "The Origami Lady" and has the corner on the niche market of paper-folding instruction and entertainment.
The goal of her origami business, Brakke said, is to make people smile through the ancient art of Japanese paper-folding.
"It gives me so much pleasure to watch children's eyes light up as they watch a piece of paper become a flapping crane or a jumping frog or even a volcano," said Brakke, who was introduced to origami by her sister 25 years ago.

Origami is the Japanese art of folding square paper to shape things such as birds, goldfish and helmets usually without scissors or glue. My guest today is Ms. Yuko Shiohara, the editor of Nippon Origami Association. She is here to tell us origami in the world today. Ms. Shiohara, warm welcome to the program. Ms. Shiohara: Thank you. Aileen: First of all, could you briefly describe the history of origami? Ms. Shiohara: The history of origami goes back many centuries. Paper was introduced to Japan from China in the 6th century. Aileen: Yes, we should first talk about the material used in the art, shouldn't we? Ms. Shiohara: However, paper was not appropriate for folding in the 6th century. The advancement of origami has been greatly attributable to the invention of washi , japanese paper. Aileen: Then, for what did they start folding washi paper? Ms. Shiohara: The starting point of folding paper is thought to be gohei , that is a wand with hemp and paper streamers in Shintoism or a wrapping of presents to show courtesy.

The Screen Should Just be the Beginning
I have always had a love-hate relationship with electronic technology. Sometimes I look around the computer lab and say to myself, "Look at this! How sick!" There we are, all of us under fluorescent lights, fingers a-clicking, each pair of eyes individually glued to it's special TV. I am among the worst. Sometime's after drawing a lot of pictures (of knots , for instance) I notice that my eyes feel like blazing sandpaper. I have been so intent on following the lines that I draw, bend, and move that I realize that I haven't been blinking! Like I said. How sick! No matter how snazzy the technology, how keen the materials, or how swell the content, educational software that merely glues kids to screens isn't all that great! It is much better if the technology is a source of ideas, puzzles or problems that stick with the user, so they can be taken away from the screen, and remain alive after the machine is clicked off. This isn't all that easy to do, and I'm not bragging that MegaMath does this to an outstanding degree. But we try.

    Art/Decoration:

Origami is widely used for art and decoration. For example the Dunn Mehler Art Gallery located in Half Moon Bay, California used these hanging cranes as part of an overall art exhibit to compliment another one of the art pieces on display. The cranes also made a timely statement of peace after the events of September 11th, 2001, in addition to festive ornaments during the Christmas and New Year holidays.

    Origami Sightings - Education
Compiled by Janet Hamilton From the OrigamiUSA Newsletter Issue 71, October 2000 While we all learn origami, and many teach it, origami can also be used as a tool for teaching other things. In many classrooms, it is used to teach dexterity, spatial reasoning, 2d to 3d translation, geometric and mathematical concepts, art, history, and cultural appreciation. Here is a accumulation of education-related origami sightings extracted from the origami-l email list. In the journal Education-of-the-Visually-Handicapped (March 1972, pages 8-11) is an article on the use of origami in the mathematics education of visually impaired students. A 1987 episode of Reading Rainbow featuring Kyoko Kondo and Andrew Zwick was filmed at Gasho Japanese Garden in Central Valley, New York. The books mentioned in the program were Easy Origami (Dokuohtei Nakano. translated by Eric Kenneway. Puffin Books, 1994 ISBN 0-14-036525-7 and originally published as "Origamikan-1: Yasashii Origami" by Takahashi Shoten, 1981), Perfect Crane (by Anne Lauren, ISBN 0-06-023743-0), and The Paper Crane (Molly Bang, ISBN 0-83-350742-7). An Educational Television program showed an experiment by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) on how various toys behave in space.
