The books of Robert Harbin
On 3rd November Lukas-Fabian Moser recommended a beginner to start with a book by Robert Harbin, but didn't know whether any of his books were still available. On 5th November, Bruce Lewisohn also mentioned his old copy of Robert Harbin's "Teach Yourself Origami" which was published over 30 years ago. He said he thought that it was Harbin's first publication. The following is a short summary of books written by Robnert Harbin about paperfolding. Robert Harbin's first paperfolding book was, in fact, "Paper Magic" which was published by the OldbourneBool Company, a division of Express Newspapers Limited, of London, in 1956. A paper-backed edition ws published by J.Maxfield Limited for many years, but appears to have gone out-of-print only in the past two or three years. Harbin's second book was "Secrets of Origami", originally published in 1963 by the Oldbourne Book Company. It was reprinted in another hard-backed edition by Octopus Books in 1971, but was for long out-of-print. A new paper-backed edition was published by Dover Books Inc. of New York in 1997. This has corrections to the instructions and a new Introduction and new Preface. It is still readily available available. Harbin's "Origami, Step-by-Step" was published in a hard-caked edition by the Hamlyn Publishing Group in 1974. It is notable for including many of Patricia Crawford's models. Dover Books Inc. have also recently republished this book in a paper-backed edition and it, too, is readily available.

Creating A Balance Inspired by the book "Sadako and The Thousand Paper Cranes"
Author: Eleanor Coerr

In the Japanese Culture, The Crane is symbolic of health, hapiness, and peace. Legend has it that if you fold 1000 cranes your wish or prayer will be granted.
In the times we live, every day human conflict spreads and grows more severe, the environment grows more threatened. There is an overwhelming need to establish harmony in our world. We have to "Create a Balance".
The White, Yellow, Red and Black cranes were adapted from a different 1000 crane mobile created in 1992, as 1 of 10, for the Winnipeg International Children's Festival 10th anniversary by Children of the Earth School. They represent the North, East, West and South. The many-coloured cranes were chosen to represent all the people of the earth, the three levels of the mobile to represent, the air, land and water. The mobile to represent "Creating A Balance".
With our world and environment in ever increasing chaos and conflict, we have folded these cranes as a symbol of our prayer, that though events such as these, that all the peoples of the world will try to "Create A Balance" so we may all enjoy "Peace, Good Health and Happiness".
Here flies 1000 cranes as a gentle reminder for all to do their part in "Creating A Balance"
Program
"Creating A Balance" is a 1 or 2 week long workshop that introduces students to the Art of Origami as a means of making a creative statement. Brian presents a history of the art of paper folding through storytelling and demonstrations. The students, through their creative efforts create a mobile sculpture. This brings the whole school together for a presentation focusing on the idea of "Creating A Balance" with nature, the environment and with each other.

Gretchen's Origami Page
Origami is many things to many people. The act of folding paper is a meditation for me, particularly when I am making modular origami. There is something that captivates me about the repetition and the magic of geometry as the square of paper becomes part of an entirely different shape. I fold for pleasure, for compassion, for other's origami projects that catch my fancy, and for business. I teach paperfolding for all those reasons as well. This web page is dedicated to the "miscellaneous" origami-related projects I have done, and includes work by other folders. I hope you will find things here that stimulate your creativity! Decorating Paper
I love to decorate plain kami with rubber stamps, and I use 2 basic methods. The first is to cover an entire piece of kami with a repetitive design, usually from a roller or block stamp. Current favorites are Clearsnap's Stars, Chinese Noodles (spirals), Screen Fade, and Bubble rollers; and Fun Stamp's marble texture cube. Here is an example of a square box using the bubble roller stamp:

Learn about Sadako and the Thousand Cranes
Origami is the Japanese art of paper folding. It literally translates as ori (folding) gami (paper). In Japan, Children learn origami at their mothers' knees. In the West, children are learning it at school. Research has shown that paper-folding, particularly in the elementary school years, is a unique and valuable addition to the curriculum. Origami is not only fun, but it is also a valuable method for developing vital skills.
Educational Benefits of Origami
  • Behavioral Skills Cooperative Learning A Link to Math Cognitive Development Multi-cultural Awareness Community Building
Behavioral Skills:
Origami is an example of "schematic learning through repeatable actions". To be successful, the student must watch closely and listen carefully to specific instructions and then carry them out with neatness and accuracy. Here is a case where a student's success is imposed by the activity rather than the teacher. Like group singing, hand games, and dancing, the pleasure comes in recreating the result and sharing it with others. For many students, it engenders a patience that leads pride in one's work, the ability to focus energy, and increased self-esteem.
Cooperative Learning:
Origami is well-suited to working with a classroom of 30 or more students. In a multi-age setting, paper-folding tends to eliminate the status associated with age differences; the younger children are often in a position to teach the older children, and it provides an activity that works well when teaming different grade levels. Many teachers report that children who do no "star" in other places, are often quick to learn origami and help their classmates master the steps.

Kindergarten through Graduate School We use origami in the classroom to augment various curricula, from "K through G"! We enjoy working with teachers and students to prepare tailored presentations that stimulate discussion and learning. Origami's hands-on approach really gets students attention. The lessons are always enjoyable and memorable. Follow-up exercises and extra credit challenges can be suggested to extend the benefits beyond the initial program. There are hundreds of subjects to consider: Japan, 1000 cranes, mythology, language, mathematics, geometry, algebra, biology, zoology and many cultural subjects, to name a few.
Other areas to consider are: World cultures, music, international geography, geology, organic chemistry, statistical analysis, critical thinking, packaging design, aeronautics, abstract art, architecture, materials evaluation, communication, public speaking and teamwork management.

Strategies for any model
Here are general techniques that can be applied to any model and fit very well in the culture of origami, in which every student is a potential teacher.
  • Assign students the task learning new models by consulting the many books available (see the bibliography) and also a growing number of Web pages.
  • As a natural follow-up to (oral) teaching, give students the task of preparing directions using their own writing and diagrams. Preparing directions at the level found in books is a challenge. However, it is possible to make acceptable diagrams using a variety of methods. Computer based systems can be used and this can serve as an opportunity to encourage students to refine and polish their work. Many people use specialized tools to produce drawings, but even the basic draw tools can be beneficial. Other options are to scan in hand drawn diagrams, scan actual models in development, or use a digital camera to produce images. These images can be marked up using a computer drawing program. Finally, students can produce hypermedia: text, images, animation, and sound linked together, with the navigation under the partial control of the user. Several different techniques for producing diagrams are included in this paper.
  • Ask students to consider beforehand what will be the results of making a fold. Ask them to visualize it 'in their minds'. Encourage them to pose generalizations on the effects of folds. For example, folding an edge to a parallel edge divides an area in half.

WHAT IS ORIGAMI WHAT IS ORIGAMI Origami is the Japanese word for paper folding. ORI means to fold and KAMI means paper. Together, they form the word, "origami." It is an art form that has been handed down from parent to child through many generations. Origami involves the creation of paper forms usually entirely by folding. Animals, birds, fish, geometric shapes, puppets, toys and masks are among the models that even very young children can learn to make in just one sitting.
HISTORY
THE CRANE WHO WERE THE FIRST PAPER FOLDERS? ORIGAMI SYMBOLS HISTORY The art of making paper from pulp originated in China in the year 102A.D. Paper then became more available to the masses. The secret of making paper was kept in China for several hundred years and finally made its way through Korea and into Japan. A Buddhist monk is said to have carried this secret .The introduction of paper making to Japan several hundred years later coincided with the development of their religion and soon became part of the lives of its people. Colors and silk threads were added and origami was held in high esteem. Gifts were decorated with "noshi." Noshi had particular fold patterns depending on the gift. In Japan, at one time origami was taught in schools but today, children are generally taught origami at home. Holidays are celebrated with colorful origami decorations made by the family. On children's day (formerly boy's day), children make colorful carp: a fish that swims upstream, against the current. This symbolizes strength. During the summer, Tanabata, The Star Festival is celebrated. Live bamboo branches are decorated with origami stars and other paper decorations in a manner which brings to mind a decorated Christmas tree.
