Budgies (from Parrot Parrot)

Budgies (budgerigars) are an extremely popular pet bird, and for good reason. These small parrots make delightful pets, and are usually friendly and easy to tame. While they can sometimes be difficult to understand, they are quite capable of mimicking speech and can become prolific talkers. Budgies are sometimes also called parakeets (specifically shell parakeets) as they are members of the parakeet family. There are also two types of budgies - the American budgie or parakeet, and the English budgie. The American variety is the one most commonly found in pet stores, while type seen in exhibitions and shows is the English budgie. English budgies are larger and have a different appearance than American budgies, but all budgies belong to the same species, Melopsittacus undulatus
  • Life span: 10-15 years (up to 20).

English budgerigars are some of the best talkers in the parrot family. They are extremely easy to tame so they do not have to be hand fed. In many cases, parent-raised babies make nicer pets because they tend to be less nippy. Hand feeding budgies can be a chore since they are like little piranhas grabbing for anything that resembles food (including your fingers!). English budgies look quite a bit different than the native Australian parakeets. They are much larger, have a large crested head, and get a funny sort of grandpa look to their faces (they sometimes appear a little grouchy) because the feathers grow over the eyes. They come in a variety of stunning colors. This one is a sky blue cinnamon. They have been bred over the years for these characteristics. They are often called exhibition budgerigars because they are the types of budgies seen in bird shows.

Although I don't believe in "beginner birds" since all birds deserve to be treated with equal respect no matter what their price tag or size, there is something about budgies that makes them a great pet for anyone who has never experienced the delights of bird ownership. Their owners are always willing to gush about them! Many people are more familiar with the term "parakeet" to describe a budgie. They are the species

Budgerigar, Parakeets
Photo courtesy: - Cora, a Parakeet Article by: Vicki Seaman Scientific Name: Melopsittacus undulatus Overview, history, and species variants: The parakeet or Budgerigar belongs to the family of true parrots, which explains why the parakeet is relatively adept at learning to talk. The parakeet comes from Australia and the first European to write anything about these colorful birds was John Gould in 1865 titled Birds of Australia . A genus all to itself, the group Platycercini includes birds like the grass parrots, Rosellas and the New Zealand parrots. The parakeet in the wild comes from the interior of Australia where the landscape is almost desert-like and there are no regular rainy seasons. It can go months and sometimes years without raining. Needless to say, this is a hardy bird. Pet appeal: Description: Physical characteristics, age, sex, color forms/mutations, size and weight: Parakeets come in over 100 color forms but primarily in green (typical in the wild), various shades of blue, opaline, gray , white, yellow (lutino), pied (combination in one bird), and in various shades of these colors, some rarer than others. Parakeets are 7" to 9 3/8" in length from the tip of the bill over the head to the tip of the tail. The tail by itself is 3 1/8" to 4 1/2" long. Parakeets weigh anywhere from 1 - 1.4 ounces ( 30-40g). The life expectancy of the average parakeet is 12 to 14 years. They reach sexual maturity at 3 to 4 months. By this time they have there adult plumage which is quite unusual in the bird kingdom.
