The Sydney 2000 Olympic Games
The Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, in the words of IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch, were "the best games ever". Held in Sydney from 15 September until 1 October 2000, the Games were a spectacular success. Performances at the Opening and Closing Ceremonies celebrated Australia's history and culture. The games were declared open by the Governor General of Australia, Sir William Deane; the flame was lit by Indigenous Australian athlete Cathy Freeman; the Olympic Oath was spoken by triple gold medallist and Hockeyroo Rechelle Hawkes; and the Officials' oath was pronounced by water polo official Peter Kerr. In a symbol of the power of the Olympic Movement, South and North Korea marched together under one flag in the Opening Ceremony, and four athletes from the newly independent nation of East Timor took part under the Olympic flag.
In all some 10,651 athletes (4,069 females and 6,582 males) from 199 nations competed in 28 sports and 300 events. The 2000 Australian team was the largest to ever represent Australia in Olympic competition; 629 athletes competed in Sydney, surpassing the 424 who competed at the Atlanta Games in 1996. The participation of the Olympic athletes of all nations was supported enthusiastically by packed audiences at every event, appreciating their sportsmanship and spirited competitiveness.

The history of the Paralympic Games
On October 18, Sydney's Paralympic Games will bring together 4000 athletes from 125 countries. This event has come a long way since Rome in 1960, where 400 competitors from 23 countries took part. The roots of these Games pre-dates Rome however. They were originally the brainchild of Doctor Ludwig Guttmann. Through his work at Stoke Mandeville hospital in England, he realised that sporting competition provided real physical and mental benefits to his patients, many of whom had been maimed during the Second World War.
He staged the 1948 International Wheelchair Games to coincide with the London Olympics, but it took 12 years to reach his ultimate goal of world competition every four years.
In 1960, the first official Paralympic Games saw 400 athletes in wheelchairs compete. Since then, the Paralympic movement has seen some hard times, but it is now moving from strength to strength. For a while, they were held in different cities to the Olympics, but since 1988, the Olympic city also becomes the Paralympic city.
In Sydney there will be 4000 athletes, from six disability categories, taking part in 18 different sports. Wheelchair rugby and sailing are the two new medal sports for these Games. The other disciplines include archery, swimming and equestrian events.

th in Total Medals Since the Start of the Winter Paralympics by Jeff Whiting In 1948, Sir Ludwig Guttmann organized a summer sports competition involving World War II veterans with a spinal cord injury in Stoke Mandeville, England. Winter disability sports started gradually after World War II, as large numbers of injured soldiers and civilians tried to return to their skiing activities. Early pioneers such as double-leg amputee Sepp Zwicknagl from Austria experimented with skiing using prostheses. Four years later, competitors from Holland joined the Stoke Mandeville Games and the international movement, now known as the Paralympics, was born. Olympic style games for athletes with a disability were organized for the first time in Rome in 1960. In Toronto in 1976, other disability groups were added and the idea of merging together different disability groups for international sport competitions was born. The first Winter Paralympic Games took place in Sweden in 1976 The Paralympic Games have always been held in the same year as the Olympic Games. Since the Seoul Summer Games (1988) and the Albertville Winter Games (1992) they have also taken place at the same venues as the Olympics. On 19 June 2001, an agreement was signed between IOC and IPC securing this practice for the future. From the 2012 bid process onwards, the host city chosen to host the Olympic Games will be obliged to host the Paralympics as well. The next Paralympic Winter Games will take place in Salt Lake City (2002), USA. For the first time, there is just one combined Organizing Committee for both the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Olympic Games, Spirit and Modern History
" The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well."
Olympic Creed
The Olympic Movement
The first recorded Ancient Games was held in 776 B.C. in ancient Europe, but evidence suggests that Games were being held long before that. Originally, competition consisted of a single foot race over a distance of 200 meters, but within a short time, the event grew to include five sports or a pentathlon. The "Olympiad" became an important event and was held every four years. During Olympic years, warring city-states were encouraged to lay down their weapons and to compete in peace on the playing field instead of on the battlefield. The Olympic Games were canceled in 394 A.D. for religious reasons. Greece, as part of the Roman Empire, had become Christian and the games were considered Pagan. Centuries later, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, a French educator and historian, recommended that the Olympic Games be restored. Coubertin believed in the spirit of Olympism; a set of values that enhance the physical, intellectual and spiritual growth of participants through sport, art and music, while promoting friendship and understanding throughout the world. Due to his work, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) was established and Athens, Greece had the honor of being the first city to host the modern Games in the year l896. June 23, l896 was designated as "Olympic Day" throughout the world.

Ancient Olympics
The first record of the Olympic Games dates from 776BC, but they were probably established hundreds of years before that. The Games began as a small event but gradually gained popularity to become the premier festival in Greece. For at least 1,000 years, they were held every four years, and survived in spite of numerous wars and the Roman invasion of Greece in about AD150.
