Introduction
The first Paralympic Games were held in Rome, Italy in 1960. Four hundred athletes from 23 countries participated. Since their humble beginnings, the Paralympics have blossomed and grown in size and complexity. The Paralympic Games are part and parcel of The Olympic Games and are held by the Olympic Host Country, following the Olympic Games. The Paralympics compete in the same venue and city as The Olympics. The Paralympic games have been held every Olympic year since Following the theme "Triumph of the Human Spirit" , the Paralympic Games are proud of the tradition they have established to bring elite challenged athletic competition to the forefront of public consciousness. Competitive sports have proved an effective vehicle to promote equality, inclusion, accessibility, and awareness about the capabilities of those with physical disability. Competitive sports dispel the age old stigma surrounding disability and illuminate the realm possibility. The Paralympics truly signify all that is right in sport The Paralympics is truly a competition of elite, world class, well trained, challenged athletes as opposed to a participatory event where all who enter receive a medal for involvement. The term "Paralympic" actually means "next to" or "parallel" to the regular Olympics. The only difference in the two is that the Paralympics provide elite competition opportunity to athletes with a functional physical disability, which precludes their involvement in open competition of the regular Olympics. Thus, the difference between the Paralympics and the Special Olympics is distinct and profoundly opposite.

Terence Parkin will be swimming at his first Olympic Games in Sydney this year. The 20-year-old South African was born with a severe hearing disability and uses sign language to communicate with his coach. But that hasn't stopped him from getting to the Olympics, where he is hoping to make his mark. "I am going to the Olympics to represent South Africa, but it's so vitally important for me to go, to show that the deaf can do anything," Parkin says. "They can't hear, they can see everything. I would like to show the world that there's opportunities for the deaf." Parkin, who owns the African record in the 400 individual medley, won two silver medals earlier this year at the Short Course World Championships in Athens.

"It's not just our decision to make," Ho Tong Ri , the head of North Korea's Winter Asian Games delegation, said. "But I think it's possible depending on further discussion." The Koreas marched together at Saturday's opening ceremony of the Winter Asian Games as they did at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and October's Asian Games in Busan, South Korea. ... Intellectually disabled athletes will be barred from the 2004 Paralympics. The International Paralympics Committee said that events for the intellectually disabled "could not go ahead in a fair manner at the 2004 Athens Paralympics" and that there was a risk of potential cheats." A ban was imposed in January 2001 after 10 of 12 members of the Spanish intellectually disabled basketball team in the 2000 Sydney Paralympics were found not to be not disabled.

Powerlifting and Weightlifting are probably two of the most under-estimated, misunderstood and least respected sports available to people with disabilities. To the lay person, images of humongus Russian lifters at the Olympics are the stereotype. Even in modern powerlifting, lifters are often portrayed as steriod-popping, short fused behemoths - when in fact the reality is considerably different. First of all Powerlifting and Weightlifting are two different sports. Weightlifting is an Olympic Sport and features two lifts. Powerlifting features three lifts - deadlift, bench press and squat and culminates in an annual world championship event. People with disabilities compete in variations on the powerlifting/weightlifting theme, due to the nature of the disability the actual lifts vary. Blind/Partially Sighted:
Full competition - deadlift, squat and bench press Lower Limb Disability:
(polio, amputee, paraplegic, cerebral palsy, les autre.)
Bench Press variation Mentally Handicapped:
Deadlift and Bench Press To complicate matters people with disabilities can compete in many of the single lift meets now popular such as bench press only meets and people with visual impairments compete in non-disabled meets (in fact some Canadian records are held by lifters with visual impairments).

'Carrying the Torch'
On the eastern end of the U.S., retired Pennsylvania school teacher Sandy Foltz, a below knee amputee ran a segment in Erie on New Year's Day. Her positive response to amputation and her example to students as an upbeat role model earned her nomination to the Olympic Committee.
Another Pennsylvania Olympic torch bearer was Denny Chipollini who became an amputee after an auto accident in 1990. He has since become a marathon runner and motivational speaker in the Philadelphia area, founding a nonprofit organization known as Generation Hope which aids children with disabilities. After his Pennsylvania run, the athlete was also selected to carry the Paralympic torch in Utah.
In Pueblo, Colorado, brothers Bob and Rick Meserve each did a segment of the Fort Collins stretch on January 30. Rick nominated his brother who became a paraplegic in 1983 following a skiing accident. Bob spent five years on the U.S. Disabled Ski Team, for which he is still an adviser, and is currently vice president of the DS/USA Board of Directors.
Also torch bearers in the Colorado segment of the run were siblings Spencer and Cody Wilcock of Lakewood who carried the beacon in downtown Englewood on Jan. 31. The children of Scott and Mona Wilcock, Cody had nominated her 13-year-old brother in recognition of the progress he has made since receiving massive head injuries in an auto/bike accident in 1995. As part of his rehabilitation, Spencer has participated at Breckenridge Outdoor Education Center, enjoying skiing, snowboarding, rock climbing, and running hurdles. According to the family, the Olympic Committee was so impressed with Cody's nomination letter that she was also asked to be a torch bearer.
