You may have been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, but there are several things you can do to help improve your quality of life. Proper diet, exercise, subtle changes in the home environment and utilizing support groups are all ways to help you control your own symptoms. Exercise
Since Parkinson's disease affects the patient's muscles and ability to move, doctors recommend daily exercise to keep muscles strong and flexible. Patients are encouraged to stretch, walk, swim, and take part in physical activities that they enjoy on a regular basis. Some patients engage in regular exercise programs that have been approved by their doctors, and some patients receive physical therapy to help them maintain good muscle tone. Diet
There is no specific diet for patients with Parkinson's disease, but doctors generally recommend a balanced diet that is rich in fiber and calcium. Many patients also supplement their diet with vitamins, although the therapeutic benefits of vitamins in the treatment of this disease have not been proven scientifically. Some patients develop a sensitivity to protein and should discuss a protein re-distribution diet with their doctor. Adapting the Home Environment
Simple changes in the home environment can help the patient with Parkinson's disease perform simple tasks more easily and safely. For example, buttons on clothing can be replaced with velcro fasteners. Throw rugs that could be tripped over can be removed. Railings installed in bathrooms, hallways or other locations can help the patient maintain balance. For patients in the advanced stages, wheelchairs and ramps can provide the means for them to move around at will.

Parkinsons Disease Parkinsons disease is believed to affect over a half million people in the United States, rarely affecting people under the age of 40. There has been no difference found in incidence between men and women. Parkinsons is a chronic disease in which certain brain cells called neurons deteriorate. The reason for this process is not known. These neurons are important because they reproduce a substance called dopamine. Dopamine is a chemical in the brain that helps control the body's muscle activity. When these neurons are destroyed, dopamine is not produced at the normal rate. A low supply of dopamine results in the symptoms of Parkinsons disease
Signs/Symptoms
Initial symptoms include:
  • stiffness
  • tremor
  • slowness of movement
  • difficulty with balance
  • difficulty with walking
Symptoms that may develop include:
  • depression
  • senility
  • stooped posture
  • difficulty speaking and swallowing
  • urinary problems or constipation
There are other neurological disorders that may cause these symptoms. These disorders may be referred to as Parkinsons syndrome, Atypical Parkinsons or Parkinsonism Plus. Parkinsonian symptoms may be caused by tumors in the brain, repeated head trauma, prolonged use of tranquilizing drugs, and with manganese and carbon monoxide poisoning.

    Parkinsons Disease
Welcome to our personal health Parkinsons disease webpage. Here we discuss what it is, natural treatments that can help. How you can delay the progress of the disease.
Parkinsons Disease (PD) is a slowly progressive, chronic disorder of the central nervous system that affects movement, muscle control, and balance. It is also called shaking palsey or paralysis agitans. PD is caused by a loss of cells in the substantia nigra section of the brain which produces dopamine. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter which transmitts signals in the brain and nervous system. Without dopamine, important nerve cells fire out of control, leaving the patient unable to control their own movements.
The Symptoms of Parkinsons disease may start with mild to moderate trembling or tremors, muscular stiffness, a general slowness and tendancy to tire more easily. Later symptoms may include difficulty walking, muscular rigidity, difficulty talking, drooling, loss of appetite, memory loss, and a fixed facial expression. The limbs gradually stiffen and the body becomes rigid. The physical symptoms may be accompanied by depression and/or dementia.
Although we do not yet know the exact cause of Parkinsons disease, there are a number of theories. Most scientists believe that it is a combination of environmental and genetic causes. One theory is that as the liver ages, it gradually fails to remove certain toxins which destroy the cells that create dopamine. Another theory is that toxic heavy metals, such as aluminum, damage the nervous system and cause Parkinsons disease. Another hypothesis is that environmental toxins like herbicides and pesticides are responsible. Malnutrition is believed to be a contributing factor. Scientists recently discovered that N-MPTP (n-methyl-1,2,3,4 tetrahydropyridine), a byproduct in the production of heroin, can kill brain cells and cause Parkinsons. Also, there are 29 prescription drugs currently on the market that can cause Parkinsons disease.

Enada NADH: Good news for patients with Parkinson's disease
    by ImmuneSupport Staff
    (10-01-1999) - Summary:
Enada NADH , otherwise known as nicotinimide adenine dinucleotide, has proven itself to be remarkably useful in treating degenerative medical disorders. Those looking for a treatment for Parkinson's disease have found that depending on the stage of the disease before treatment, NADH yields many improvements.
Close to 3,000 European patients with Parkinson's disease have witnessed astounding improvements after nutritionally supplementing their diet with NADH . In other words, about 80 % of patients seen in Europe that suffer from Parkinson's disease experienced great improvements when treated with NADH. In the remaining percentage of patients who witnessed no change in condition, the disease had progressed to far, resulting in to much damage to the brain.
    What characterizes Parkinson's disease?
Parkinson's disease is a degenerative brain disorder associated with several symptoms such as trembling and muscular rigidty, depression, and mental impairment. Usually appearing near the age of 40, the disease may eventually lead to incapacity as the brain cells which produce dopamine become inert.
A recent clinical trial investigating how the body can best and most efficiently use NADH , studied the responses of 885 patients with Parkinson's disease to NADH. Some patients received the compound by intravenous infusion while others received oral tablets. Reasearchers found that the oral supplement yielded greater results

(named after 19th century British physician James Parkinson)
A slow, progressive, degenerative nerve disease, related to the death of cells deep in the brain which control muscle tension and movement. Brain cells that die are gone forever and are NOT ever replaced . Symptoms appear when there is a lack of dopamine, a neuro- transmitter or message carrier from brain to brainstem. A nutrient dense diet and supplement program is the first line of defense
"When medications are added to control symptoms, there is an unwanted array of side effects like nausea, hallucinations and spastic movements. Dosage is critical, but doesn't seem to follow a measurable pattern, which requires much experimentation and trial for each patient. Finding the right dosage is extremely hard and the patient seems to be always under or over medicated . Even advances in administering medication produce effects that are limited and eventually become ineffective. It was thought that symptoms were caused by suppression, or lack of electrical activity in the nerve pathways but the exact opposite is true. How can a brain whose major problem stems from the death of some of its cells be repaired by deliberately destroying a few more? Patients experience too much unmodulated stimulation in certain pathways, which is helped by surgically deadening a few of the cells in this pathway...the basis for PVP (see research history below). Parkinson's disease is a progressive neurological disorder marked by the loss of brain cells that produce dopamine, a chemical key in controlling muscle activity. When dopamine levels are low, normally coordinated brain regions that control body movement become out of sync, leading to tremors, muscle rigidity, slowed movement and balance and coordination problems. levodopa is a precursor to dopamine in the brain, and the synthetic version can greatly alleviate patients' symptoms. It does not cure the disorder, though, and the efficacy of the drug diminishes with time.
Parkinson's Disease - Complementary Carnosine Therapy
The ultimate cause, on the atomic level, are toxic free radicals and their toxic metabolites, which damage certain cells in the brain. H2O2 and TPA (tetracanoylphorbolacetate) are such radicals, and they are able to kill brain cells prematurely. Carnosine has been shown to prevent these radicals and it is thus protecting the brain cells (

Effective Ways to Cope previous browse next (Page 3) Treatment regimens for Parkinson's disease fall into a number of different categories. The most common include the following:
    • Medical Intervention - It is very important in the early days of assessing a proper diagnosis that a thorough and complete examination be conducted by a medical professional knowledgeable of this disease. Imperative to the overall success of dealing and coping with this disease is the need to develop the appropriate course of medical treatment. This plan should be specifically tailored to meet the needs of the individual. Personal Support Network - How one handles the various stresses of life such as an illness is often directly correlated to the personal support systems that are in place. A strong family and support network can have a positive effect on one's emotional ability to deal with the day to day stresses associated with illnesses. Parkinson's Support Groups - One of the most effective support systems available are those involving patients that are diagnosed with these diseases. Parkinson's disease support groups provide a unique opportunity to share on a personal basis the feelings and physical effects that a person must deal with during the course their illness.

The Facts: Parkinson's disease is a progressive, degenerative disease of the brain and nervous system. This means that it gets worse with time, and the parts of the body affected by Parkinson's disease slowly lose their ability to function properly. The symptoms of Parkinson's disease are vast, and include:

  • In the USA there are between 500,000 and 1.5 million people with Parkinson's disease. This number is not precise since it is not contagious hence doctors need no report it. The chances of getting Parkinson's disease increase with age White people are most likely to get it People who live in rural areas may be more likely to get it More men get Parkinson's disease than women If you smoke you may be less likely to get Parkinson's disease

If research into Parkinson's disease continues at its present pace this dreaded disease may well be fully understood and largely preventable early in the 21st Century. Parkinson's disease ( paralysis agitans , shaking palsy) was first described in 1817. L-dopa, the mainstay of current drug therapy was introduced in 1970 and since then hundreds of research papers have been published on the disease. It is now increasingly clear not only what causes Parkinson's, but also how it can be prevented and its relentless progress slowed down. Incidence and Symptoms
Idiopathic (of no known cause) Parkinson's disease affects about one percent of the population over the age of 60 years in the United States. It is more common among men than among women and also seems to be more widespread in northern countries. The incidence of the disease increases with age although aging itself is not believed to be a causative factor. Parkinson's disease is rarely inherited and less than one per cent of all cases are thought to have a genetic component. At this time there is no medical cure for the condition, but drugs that alleviate the symptoms and slow the progress of the disease are available(1-5). The main symptom of Parkinson's disease is a pronounced tremor affecting the extremities notably the hands, chin or lips. The tremor is most evident at rest and disappears with movement. Other characteristic symptoms of Parkinson's disease are stiffness or slowness of movement, a shuffling walk, stooped posture, and difficulties in performing simple tasks. Memory impairment and cognitive dysfunction are rarely encountered in early stage Parkinson's disease. Depression is, however, a common feature and about 30 per cent of Parkinson's disease victims eventually develop Alzheimer's disease or other forms of dementia(1-3,6-8).
