Editor-in-Chief
SCOPE OF THE JOURNAL
Nutritional Neuroscience
is an international, interdisciplinary broad based journal for reporting both basic and clinical research in the field of nutrition that relates to the central and peripheral nervous system. The studies may include the role of diet, dietary supplements, and food additives on neurochemistry, neurobiology, and behavioral biology of all vertebrate and invertebrate organisms. At present there is no single journal with a central theme of integrating nutrition and nervous system. It is anticipated that this journal will serve as a common forum for neuroscientists, nutritionists, neurologists, psychiatrists, naturopaths, and those interested in preventive medicine.
Following are the examples of some of the specific topics that may be covered by this new journal:
  • Animal Studies

Michael J. Fox is still drinking the diet soda.
Many medical professionals and health activists loudly proclaim that aspartame sweetener in diet sodas causes symptoms that mimic, or accentuate Parkinson's disease. The first class-action lawsuits have already been filed. Michael is diagnosed with Parkinson's.

A prudent person might well have long ago eliminated the notorious additive from their diet. But, incredibly, Michael J. Fox seems to still be drinking the soda.
Before he appeared on last week's Oprah show, promoting his new book "Lucky Man," reporter Ann Oldenburg, for USA Today, interviewed him about his medical condition. She wrote

Parkinson’s Disease
By Saentania Desronvil
What is Parkinson’s disease? Parkinson’s Disease is a slowly progressive disease of the nervous system. There are about 1.2 million Parkinson’s patients in the United States and about 1% of the population over 65. Parkinson’s disease affects men more than women: 55 men/45/women. PD affects Caucasians more than people of color. The cause of PD is not known but it is linked to genetic factors and some environmental factors. What are the symptoms? PD is diagnosed if a patient has two or more of the principal symptoms. Parkinson’s is characterized by four Rigidity of the limbs. Tremor of the limbs. This is more often in the hands. Some patients do not have tremors. Bradykinesia includes difficulty initiating movement, slowness in movement and incomplete movements. Bradykinesia is the most prominent and disabling symptom of PD. Postural Instability is when the PD patient shows unsteadiness of lack-of-balance. There are other symptoms that may also appear which include: difficulty speaking (hoarse voice) lack of facial expression, drooling, difficulty swallowing, oily skin, cramped handwriting, stooped-posture, shortness of breath, depression, anxiety and sleep disturbances. These are called secondary symptoms. What treatments are suggested?

About Parkinsons
If you've recently learned that you have Parkinson's, your feelings may range from shock, concern and uncertaintly to depression, anger and acceptance. The challenge now is to learn what you can about managing your condition so you can enjoy a fuller life. Parkinson's is a progressive neurological condition that causes difficulties in initiation, co-ordination and control of physical movement, e.g. walking, talking, and swallowing. It can also affect thought and emotion. Parkinson's results from a loss in the brain of a neuro transmitter (or chemical messenger) called dopamine. this loss is caused by gradual degeneration of cells in the substantia nigra, in the centre of the brain. Mouse Experiments Link Folic Acid Deficiency to Parkinsons Disease
Mouse experiments suggest that folic acid deficiency could increase the brains susceptibility to Parkinsons disease, according to scientists at the National Institute on Aging. In the finding, published in the January 2002 issue of the Journal of Neurochemistry, the investigators fed one group of mice a diet that included folate, while a second group was fed a diet lacking this vitamin. They then gave the mice moderate amounts of MPTP, a chemical that can cause Parkinson-like symptoms. In the mice fed folate, MPTP caused only mild symptoms of disease. But mice fed the folate-deficient diet developed severe Parkinson-like symptoms.
The scientists found that mice with low amounts of dietary folic acid had elevated levels of homocysteine in the blood and brain. They suspect that increased levels of homocysteine in the brain caused damage to the DNA of nerve cells in the substantia nigra, an important brain structure that produces dopamine. Loss of dopamine causes the nerve cells to dysfunction, leaving patients unable to direct or control their movement in a normal manner. In mice fed adequate amounts of folate, dopamine-producing nerve cells were able to repair damaged DNA and counteract the adverse effects of homocysteine. However, similar nerve cells in folate-deficient mice could not repair extensive DNA damage. As a result, these cells died.

ENDA in Perspective
By Michael John Harris In the Daily Mail , on May 1 this year, an article by Dr J Biffa gave an anecdotal account of the use of a drug/food supplement, ENADA, for treating the tremor features of Parkinson's Disease. The manufacturers call it a food supplement. I have researched the area and now provide the following neutral perspective on the subject There is considerable information on the internet on the subject of ENADA, it has to be said mainly from the proponents of this material, including a man by the name of Georg Birkmayer. This goes back to the early 1990s. The information provided indicates that taking ENADA is useful for a variety of conditions including Parkinson's Disease. ENADA is the brand name for a patented, orally-absorbed form of NADH. NADH is a very important naturally-occuring substance. It is a coenzyme, an oxido/reduction catalyst if you like, involved in many fundamental metabolic processes in plant and animal tissue. It is referred to in the newspaper article as Niacinamide Adenine Dinucleotide. It is more often referred to as Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide, the components Niacinamide and Nicotinamide being the same substance, the amide form of vitamin B3. The patent covers the enteric coating of the NADH to protect it in the stomach, where it would otherwise be broken down before absorption.
