The Induction of Hypothyroidism and Interstitial Cystitis in Mice Fed a Soy-based Diet.
REBECCA L. AMBROSE, Department of Biology, Hartwick College, Oneonta, NY 13820.
It has been hypothesized that a soy-based diet can induce hypothyroidism, which may be linked to a chronic inflammation of the bladder called interstitial cystitis. Evidence that an increased soy intake can cause hypothyroidism was demonstrated in mice fed a 19% soy diet. All mice fed the soy diet showed an increase in weight gain and body mass index (BMI) within the first two weeks of starting the diet. After eight weeks all six treated mice had gained an average of ten grams more weight and had a higher BMI than the six untreated controls, indicating that hypothyroidism was induced. Bladder tissues from the mice fed the soy diet were examined by both light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The tissue samples did not reveal the presence of interstitial cystitis. Based on these results, it can be presumed that soy-induced hypothyroidism does not cause interstitial cystitis in mice.

Parkinson's Disease - Can Diet or Exercise Programs Help Relieve Symptoms? Diet. Eating a well-balanced, nutritious diet can be beneficial for anybody. But for preventing or curing Parkinson's disease, there does not seem to be any specific vitamin, mineral, or other nutrient that has any therapeutic value. A high protein diet, however, may limit levodopa's effectiveness. Despite some early optimism, recent studies have shown that tocopherol (a form of vitamin E) does not delay Parkinson's disease. This conclusion came from a carefully conducted study supported by the NINDS called DATATOP (Deprenyl and Tocopherol Antioxidative Therapy for Parkinson's Disease) that examined, over 5 years, the effects of both deprenyl and vitamin E on early Parkinson's disease. While deprenyl was found to slow the early symptomatic progression of the disease and delay the need for levodopa, there was no evidence of therapeutic benefit from vitamin E. Exercise.

Book Reviews
A. Hoffer, M.D., Ph.D. by Harold D. Foster, Belhaven Press, London and CRC Press, Boca Raton.
Hardcover, 516 pages, 1992. Every few years a new orthomolecular book is published which clearly marks a major move forward, toward a better recognition of all the factors which influence good health and its opposite, disease. In 1989 it was Joseph D. Beasley and Jerry J. Swift's excellent book, The Kellog Report, reviewed in this journal, Vol 5, 49 - 51, 1990. This report, subtitled "Impact of Nutrition, Environment and Life style on the Health of Americans," was a total, comprehensive review of what is known about health and disease. It will have a major impact on health maintenance practises within a few years. It takes time for this type of information to be fully digested and understood. Another first-class book is Harold D. Foster's recent book. Here he not only reviews what is known about many chronic diseases, but he examines what is known in relation to a large number of environmental factors such as geography, climate, the composition of the soil and of water and so on. This is based upon large-scale correlation studies of these factors and their impact on health. This volume is so full of important information that no book review can do it justice. For this reason I will do what I have never done before, i.e. review it over the next four issues of this journal as follows; SIDS, Parkinsonism, and multiple sclerosis in the first portion, then, heart disease, stroke, and diabetes mellitus; followed by cancer of the esophagus and breast, folllowed by dementia and schizophrenia.

WARNING: IF YOU ARE DRINKING DIET SODAS WHICH CONTAIN ASPARTAME OR USING SUGAR-FREE PRODUCTS - READ THIS!! Diet Sodas, foods labeled as "sugarless" "diet foods" "low calorie" and the like - You had better be careful and read the label to see if they contain ASPARTAME. Besides diet soft drinks, the main culprits are the sweetener in the BLUE PACKETS - "EQUAL" and the BRAND NAME SWEETENER "NUTRASWEET". ASPARTAME is not a safe food additive by any means. It is unstable, and it converts into a number of toxic substances: formaldehyde, methanol, formic acid (ant sting poison) just to name a few. The United States Food and Drug Administration FDA, along with the American Diabetic Association and lot of other agencies and foundations which are supposed to be in charge of protecting the consumer public are receiving substantial funding from the manufacturers of aspartame, in order to misrepresent the safety of this chemical. If you are using aspartame you are likely to have one of the following symptoms: Frequent headaches, migraines, joint pain, panic attacks, muscle pain, memory loss, confusion, nausea, muscle spasms, insomnia, anxiety, racing heart or irregular heart beats, difficulty breathing, ringing in the ears, dizziness, disorientation, and a lot of other symptoms of toxic reactions.

http://annapoliscenter.org/pr1-29-99.htm
Friday, January 29, 1999 Koenig Says Media Comments That Environmental Exposures Cause Parkinson Disease Are "a Leap" ANNAPOLIS, MD - The President of The Annapolis Center, the former Surgeon General of the U.S. Navy, Vice Admiral (Ret.) Harold M. Koenig, today publicly questioned the scientific credibility of media statements that most cases of Parkinson Disease are caused by exposure to pesticides and herbicides. Koenig said that while a January 27 th article in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), "Parkinson Disease in Twins: An Etiologic Study" indicated that approximately 90% of cases of Parkinson Disease do not have a genetic origin, the assumption that non-genetic cases must have an environmental component was an "irresponsible leap in science" on the part of the media. Koenig says the result was a rash of media sensationalism that can mislead the public. "Most media reports contained comments claiming that environmental factors playing a role in typical Parkinson’s Disease include exposure to chemicals such as pesticides and herbicides, diet and tobacco smoke," said Koenig. "However a careful reading of the article shows that it contains no comment about any environmental agents that may produce Parkinson’s Disease." Vice Admiral Koenig noted that an editorial in the same issue of JAMA titled "Understanding Parkinson Disease," by Jeffrey L. Cummings, M.D. mentions five reports written in the late 80s and early 90s that discuss candidate risk factors or exposures that may play a role in Parkinson Disease. These articles discussed pesticide use, living in a rural environment, consumption of well water, exposure to herbicides, and proximity of residence to industrial plants, printing plants or quarries as possible risk factors.

Parkinson's disease may be one of the most baffling and complex of the neurological disorders. Its cause remains a mystery but research in this area is active, with new and intriguing findings constantly being reported. Parkinson's disease was first described in 1817 by James Parkinson, a British physician who published a paper on what he called "the shaking palsy." In this paper, he set forth the major symptoms of the disease that would later bear his name. For the next century and a half, scientists pursued the causes and treatment of the disease. They defined its range of symptoms, distribution among the population, and prospects for cure. In the early 1960s, researchers identified a fundamental brain defect that is a hallmark of the disease: the loss of brain cells that produce a chemical —

"I went to the doctor a year and a half ago and was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. I was having tremors in my arms and I would stumble and trip over my own feet. At the senior-citizen center, I had to lean on furniture to steady myself. A friend told me about Rice Bran Solubles because it had helped her and her husband so much with all their health problems. When they told me what a difference it had made in their lives, I decided to give it a try. After only eleven days of taking RiSoTriene, I got up and walked into the kitchen without a bobble. I was so surprised, I could have fallen to my knees right then, but I didn't have enough faith to think I could get up again. Rice Bran Solubles has helped me so much, now I have only an occasional tremor, and can walk anywhere I want." Item# Discription Retail

    http://www.student.lu.se/~tps97arv/termin4/psykopat/ovrigt/park.html
    Parkinson's disease
If research into Parkinson's disease continues at its present pace this dreaded disease may well be fully understood and largely preventable by the year 2000. Parkinson's disease ( paralysis agitans , shaking palsy) was first described in 1817. L-dopa, the mainstay of current drug therapy was introduced in 1970 and since then hundreds of research papers have been published on the disease. It is now increasingly clear not only what causes Parkinson's, but also how it can be prevented and its relentless progress slowed down. Incidence and Symptoms
Idiopathic (of no known cause) Parkinson's disease affects about one percent of the population over the age of 60 years in the United States. It is more common among men than among women and also seems to be more widespread in northern countries. The incidence of the disease increases with age although aging itself is not believed to be a causative factor. Parkinson's disease is rarely inherited and less than one per cent of all cases are thought to have a genetic component. At this time there is no medical cure for the condition, but drugs which alleviate the symptoms and slow the progress of the disease are available. The main symptom of Parkinson's disease is a pronounced tremor affecting the extremeties notably the hands, chin or lips. The tremor is most evident at rest and disappears with movement. Other characteristic symptoms of Parkinson's disease are stiffness or slowness of movement, a shuffling walk, stooped posture, and difficulties in performing simple tasks. Memory impairment and cognitive dysfunction are rarely encountered in early stage Parkinson's disease. Depression is, however, a common feature and about 30 per cent of Parkinson's disease victims eventually develop Alzheimer's disease or other forms of dementia.
