Mote has had careers in real estate, stock brokerage, hog farming, and as a fishing guide. He started painting in 1992 after reading Betty Edwards "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain". Three months later Mrs. Edwards held a week long seminar in Columbus which he attended, and he heard and believed that "everyone has the creative ability to become an artist." He has pursued that goal with a passion. Working mostly in pastels and oil, his soulful devotion to nature and his sensitivity to his surroundings are reflected in the heart of his paintings. Since that time his work has gone from strength to strength. His delightful paintings of the landscape, which so obviously echo his love of the countryside, attract great admiration from all who see them. As a rule of thumb, pastel paper should be medium to course grained so that it will help the pastel pigment better "bite" and hold on to the surface. If the paper's surface is too smooth, applied pastels will tend to smear and hold poorly.

What few realize is how pastels can be mixed with other mediums to achieve effects that are impossible with pastels alone. This compatibility with other drawing and painting mediums allows for rich and interesting experimentation with mixed media techniques. Pastels can be mixed with watercolors, acrylic paints and gels, alkyds, and oil paints for a large range of painterly effects. Pencil and ink can also be incorporated into a pastel drawing to add textural line qualities. For texture, modeling paste and marble dust can be added to pastels to build up impasto qualities. Those willing to experiment with some of these combinations will most certainly add to their repertoire of drawing and painting techniques.
