underlying illnesses of inpatients requiring nutrition support include requirements for nutritional assessment. Nutrition support is provided for patients with malignancy undergoing chemotherapy and for patients with AIDS; chronic liver, renal, or pulmonary failure; gastrointestinal failure, including inflammatory bowel disease and intestinal malabsorption syndromes. Perioperative nutrition support is also given to patients undergoing major surgical procedures.
Inpatient nutrition support services are the responsibility of a team of health-care professionals, including a designated hospital dietitian, a designated pharmacist, and the attending physician of each month. Patient follow-up and new clinical nutrition consultations are also provided by outpatient clinics, each attended 2-3 times weekly by Drs. Halsted, Crim, and Wolfe. Consultations focus on evaluation and care of patients with intractable morbid obesity, combined hyperlipidemias, anorexia and bulimia nervosa, and chronic intestinal failure requiring home total parenteral nutrition (TPN).
Both in- and outpatient clinical activities provide a setting for education and training of third- and fourth-year medical students, medical residents, and endocrinology and gastroenterology fellows on elective rotations. The inpatient nutrition support service provided a setting for a previous P/F study by F Battistella, MD, who now has independent funding to continue his project.

    Introduction
On June 26, 1998 Janssen Pharmaceutica issued an announcement to physicians and patients that the labeling for cisapride was being changed to reflect increased warnings regarding the association between use of the drug and adverse cardiac events. Additionally, the list of drugs that potentially could increase the risk of a cisapride-related adverse effect was expanded. The announcement had a major impact on practitioners because of the frequency with which cisapride is used throughout the world. Although well intended, the letter caused confusion as to whether cisapride should be used and if so, what precautions should be taken prior to or after administering the medication. In response to the situation, the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition (NASPGHAN) convened a Committee in August, 1998 to address these and other issues engendered by the new warnings regarding cisapride use (Dr. Allen Mitchell joined the Committee in November, 1998). The purview of the Committee was to develop a medical position statement on the appropriate use of cisapride in infants and children. Members of the Committee included six pediatric gastroenterologists, two pediatric cardiologists, a pediatric pharmacologist, and a pediatric pharmacoepidemiologist. The Committee worked independently but received cooperation from the Janssen USA staff, including Mr. Joseph Defilippis, Drs. Mark Klausner and Alan Joslyn, as well as Dr. Stephen Spielberg (Global Head, Pediatric Drug Development, Johnson and Johnson, Inc).

Are Our Kids Okay? We hear in the news that the percentage of American children who are obese has doubled in the last twen- ty years, and that the rate of increase continues to rise. Today about 1 in 7 children are obese on average more than one child in every classroom. Obesity is already an important health threat to children (including causing a dramatic increase in childhood hypertension and type 2 diabetes ). The long-term consequences are staggering. However, an important study in the April 9, 2003 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association brings o- besity statistics and facts to a personal point. In this study, children were asked a variety of questions to learn about their experience of life. Obese children reported a significantly lower quality of life than other children a quality of life on par with that reported by childhood cancer patients. How poignant! And what a huge impact on our younger generation! These findings call us to take action on behalf of our children.
