The following bibliography lists reference material dealing with Indian boarding schools during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These resources include material found in the Labriola National American Indian Data Center in the University Libraries at Arizona State University, websites, and other research facilities. This subject guide is also located on the Labriola Center website at www.asu.edu/lib/archives/labriola.htm
GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT BOARDING SCHOOLS The most famous boarding school for Indian children was the Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Pennsylvania, founded by Richard Pratt in 1879. The philosophy and intent of this and most subsequent schools was to assimilate Indian children by removing them from their native cultures, and teaching them the manners, dress, and job skills that were deemed important by the school founders and administrators. While boarding schools still exist, most had changed their practices of forced assimilation by the 1930s. This bibliography only covers the schools from 1879 to 1940. It does not contain any novels. It is not a complete list.

Justification and Rationalization

Day Schools vs. Boarding Schools
Carlisle Indian School and Richard Henry Pratt The System Begins to Fail By way of introduction: The Reservation Boarding School System was a war in disguise. It was a war between the United States government and the children of the First People of this land. Its intention was that of any war, elimination of the enemy. The reason this war is difficult to recognize is because it was covered by the attractive patina of a concept called "Manifest Destiny." Manifest Destiny was a philosophy by which the white european invader imagined themselves as having a divine right to take possession of all land and its fruits. The reason that the Concept of Manifest Destiny was so effective was because, as it steam rolled across the land, it dragged the masses with it. The hooks that dragged these masses were many and were forged by Christianity and the Christian imprimatur. Although the fuel that energized Manifest Destiny was economic, the inspiration was in its alignment with divine will. This quote from the essay

Seeking to educate increasing numbers of Indian children at lower cost, the federal government established two other types of schools: the reservation boarding school and day schools. Reservation boarding schools had the advantage of being closer to Indian communities and as a result had lower transportation costs. Contact between students and their families was somewhat restricted as students remained at the school for eight to nine months of the year. Relatives could visit briefly at prescribed times. School administrators worked constantly to keep the students at school and eradicate all vestiges of their tribal cultures. Day schools, which were the most economical, usually provided only a minimal education. They worked with the boarding schools by transferring students for more advanced studies.

Be sure to explain why this marker will have meaning for people from the whole state or country, not just from your own community. Be concise. Do not exceed the space provided. The Indian Industrial School at Carlisle PA was founded October 6, 1879 with the arrival of the first Native American Indian children from the Pine Ridge and Rosebud Sioux Agencies. Educating Indians was intended to "solve the Indian Problem" through assimilation - very well and frequently expressed sentiment of the policymakers and reformers. The experiment expanded from those first 78 recruits to over 10,700 students before the school was closed in 1918. These children came from over 145 American Indian nations. The brainstorm of Richard Henry Pratt, former Cavalry officer who had worked with Buffalo Soldiers and Indian scouts during the Indian Wars, Carlisle became the first off-reservation boarding school exclusively for Indian children. Pratt's mission is often described as "Kill the Indian, Save the Man" as he likened his assimilationist policies to the analogy of Christian baptism. "In Indian civilization I am a Baptist, because I believe in immersing the Indians in our civilization and when we get them under holding them there until they are thoroughly soaked."

http://www.sd4history.com/unit5/boardingschools.htm
Photo courtesy of South Dakota State Historical Society Boarding schools were set up across the country to teach Indian children how to live in a white world. To go to school, many children had to leave their families behind. They often went a long way from home to live at these schools. Spotted Tail’s children went to Pennsylvania. Soon each reservation would have one or more boarding schools. Some were run by the government. Others were run by missionaries. The children learned how to read and write English. They also learned how to bake bread, how to sew, and how to farm or run a printing press. They could not speak their own language. They had to become Christians. Many were not happy there. Flandreau Indian School was one of the largest boarding schools in South Dakota. The girls in the picture are learning how to cook there.
