The Pennsylvania Art Educator
Volume 2 - Fall 1993 Edited for the Web General Education in Art
Patricia M. Amburgy In education courses, I sometimes introduce the topic of general education by asking students to answer three questions. First I ask, "What is the single most important question you would like to answer in your lifetime?" The question requires some reflection, of course, so I pause to give students time to think about it before they write something down. Then I ask, Can science or modern technology help you answer this question?" Finally I ask, "If you could change one thing about the world, what would it be?" After everyone has finished writing, we discuss the questions in class. In answer to the first one, the single most important question they would like to answer, students respond with questions such as these: Is there life after death?
What is love?
Why is there prejudice in the world?
Why are there wars?
Does God exist?
Why was I born?
What is the purpose of human life?

RE: Changes in the General Education Program Effective Fall, 1999 the following changes in Clarion University's General Education program have been implemented. These changes have been programmed into the on-course audit system.
1.The Quantitative Reasoning Category in General Education has been eliminated. This category has been replaced with a "Q" flag that students will earn by taking approved courses. All courses that were approved for the now defunct "QR" category fulfill the "Q" flag. The "Q" flag can be met by general education courses or by courses in the major. Faculty are encouraged to submit courses for a "Q" flag that focus on quantitative reasoning. Requirements for these courses can be found on the web at hffp://www.clarion.edu/gened . The flag application form has been revised and can be found at the same site on the link to course submission procedures. The application form is also enclosed in this mailing. 2.The Linked flag has been eliminated.

This page links laws of Pennsylvania enacted by the legislature, both the Pennsylvania Consolidated Statutes and unconsolidated statutes, arranged according to their customary citation. who from other sources will research the law to insure what is current, should always be employed in matters of importance.
Another word of caution is in order: The laws of each state are different. The following Pennsylvania statutes, though available instantaneously over the web, may not be the current law. We attempt to post statutes which have not been repealed as of the date of posting, which date usually is referenced at the bottom of each page. However, court decisions overturning them, later statutes amending them, and a host of other factors come into play when interpreting them. They are provided here as a resource.
For over six years this website has made available, free of charge, legal information which we believe is valuable to a wide variety of users and is nowhere else available on the web. Every month over 10,000 people use it. However, the work is not funded by any government subsidy. Therefore, requests for printed copies of these statutes or for ones not yet posted here cannot be filled. Similarly, we cannot provide free legal research services or provide free legal opinions. We do not have time to answer and will not respond to emails seeking these. Thank you for understanding.

Project Partners with Accreditors on Assessment and Student Achievement Greater Expectations: Project on Accreditation and Assessment, Newsletter #3 Assessing Diversity Courses This article by Jack Meacham underscores the importance of tying assessment of diversity courses to the learning goals of the course. In three pages it offers a wide variety of practical assessment methods that could be immediately adapted to evaluate a diversity course. The Comprehensive Assessment Program King's College in Pennsylvania provides components of its nationally recognized Comprehensive Assessment Program that occurs within the Core Curriculum and at critical junctures in the major in order to ensure that students are combining learning in the major with learning in the Core Curriculum. The Status of General Education in the Year 2000: Summary of a National Survey available for purchase Student Assessment-as-Learning Faculty members at Alverno College have developed the concept of assessment-as-learning, a multidimensional process consisting of course-based assessments and integrative assessments that focus on student learning from several courses, in order to elicit samples of performance representing the expected learning outcomes from a course or program. Faculty and other trained assessors offer diagnostic feedback that, in addition to student's self assessment, creates a continuous process that improves learning and integrates it with assessment.
