Shaping the Future in Central Pennsylvania
June 23-25, 1991
CONFERENCE HIGHLIGHTS Shaping the Future in Central Pennsylvania , a conference on the future of the region, was held at Bucknell University, Lewisburg, from Sunday, June 23, through Tuesday, June 25, 1991. The purpose of the conference was to begin a process, extending through this decade and perhaps beyond, that will attempt to define a future for Central Pennsylvania that accommodates the vision of the greatest number of our people. A total of 240 persons participated in the conference. Participants in the conference spent most of their time (a total of 7.5 hours) in small group discussions , 1.5 hours on each of the five principal issue areas. Following are highlights from each of those five issue areas: Education concerns included a need for reform of the tax structure that provides funding for schools; the importance of teaching thinking skills; improvement in the ways in which teachers are evaluated; rules relating to teacher tenure; less ''political" school boards; lifelong education; and more foreign language instruction. Environment needs included improved and enhanced public information and education in order to establish a broad public consensus on the various issues; the use of the latest in communication technology and technique; increased environmental education in the school curriculums; more effective land use planning, with a regional approach; and intensification of recycling efforts, coupled with the enactment of a Pennsylvania "Bottle Bill."

GENERAL INFORMATION
A View of Temple University
Temple University: a lesson in contrasts. A commitment to teaching with a desire to learn from new experiences. The dazzle of the city and the rolling green of the suburbs. A dedication to new technologies and cutting-edge research built upon decades of practical experience in the field. Located in the heart of metropolitan Philadelphia, Temple’s Main Campus reflects the history and diversity of over 100 years of educating young men and women. From historic College Hall to state-of-the-art "smart" classrooms in Tuttleman Learning Center, to the Liacouras Center, a thriving sports, entertainment and recreation complex; Temple University declares its commitment to learning, teaching, and living. As an internationally recognized institution, Temple has earned its reputation. Temple’s commitment to teaching and research has attracted top faculty members to each of its 127 bachelor’s degree programs, as well as to its professional, master's and doctoral programs. Temple professors are committed not only to research and teaching but to their students as well. A 15-1 student-to-faculty ratio ensures that students and professors develop a close rapport that enhances the learning experience. Temple’s campus extends further than its North Philadelphia roots. It offers campuses and programs of study in Center City Philadelphia, Ambler and Harrisburg, PA. The Temple University Health Sciences Center, located just two miles north of the Main Campus, is home to the Temple University schools of Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmacy. It also includes the Temple University Hospital, a world-class medical facility. If you are looking for the diversity of an international program, Temple has campuses in Rome and Tokyo as well as opportunities to study on almost every continent in countries like England, Germany, Ghana, France, Spain, India, and Scotland. On campus, programs like the Latin American Studies Semester provide an in-depth study of foreign cultures right at home.

    Education and Educational Studies
DESCRIPTION Education is an interdisciplinary area of study, drawing on the fields of anthropology, philosophy, sociology, linguistics, psychology, history, economics, and public policy. Education courses invite recognition and analysis of the dialectic between theory and practice and of the connections between what we learn, why we learn, how we learn, and how all learning fits into larger philosophical, psychological, historical, and socioeconomic patterns.
The Bryn Mawr/Haverford education program offers three options to students interested in education: students may (1) complete a sequence of courses leading to certification to teach at the secondary (grades 7-12) level in Pennsylvania, (2) pursue a minor in educational studies, or (3) take courses which are open to all interested students. The certification sequence and the minor are explained below.
Students seeking certification or wishing to complete the minor should meet with the program administrator as early as possible for advice on scheduling, preferably by the sophomore year. Once enrolled in either program, students must meet with the program administrator at pre-registration time each semester. A concentration in education is also offered at Haverford. Interested students should contact Ann Brown, concentration coordinator.

UD legislative fellows assist Delaware General Assembly
The Delaware General Assembly receives assistance in researching and crafting bills, as well as other areas, and the fellows get hands-on experience in the inner workings of government, according to Lisa Moreland and Bernard Dworsky, program co-coordinators for the 2003 Legislative Fellows Program. The selection of the fellows is competitive, according to Dworsky, and those chosen must participate in a three-day orientation program. Fellows serve during the entire legislative session in Dover, which extends from January through June. Fellows assist legislators in dealing with critical issues facing the state. In recent years, fellows have worked on areas as diverse as land use planning, education reform and juvenile justice. Past fellows include Lt. Gov. John Carney; Devona Goeins Williams of Goeins-Williams Associates, a consulting and public relations firm; and Mark Manno, extension agent IV in the Cooperative Extension Service.

    Warrior Run Performance Review Text
TURBOTVILLE (January 12) Auditor General Robert P. Casey, Jr. today released the findings of the first-ever performance review of the Warrior Run School District. In a report entitled For Our Children’s Future – A Performance Review of the Warrior Run School District Casey identifies several ways the district can reallocate $550,400 over the next three years to the classroom for teaching and learning. "The results of our performance review will help put more dollars into the classroom so students will learn more now and earn more in the 21st century," Casey said. Casey’s performance review was designed to help the Warrior Run School District improve its efficiency and effectiveness in certain key areas transportation, risk management, building upkeep and utilities, food service and maximizing revenue. These areas were selected for review by the school district and auditors from the Department of the Auditor General. Officials also took into consideration input gathered at a community open house that Casey hosted on October 22, 1997.

(2) What common strategies do they employ to secure their sustained vitality? (3) What common problems do they experience?" (P.1) The report is divided into two parts, each part containing six principles which provide the foundation for general education. The sections are: Articulating a Compelling Vision for General Education, and Forming an Evolving Community Based Upon a Vision of General Education.
