An interesting small map from the June, 1754 issue of the London Magazine depicting the title aside parts of New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, as well as Lakes Ontario and Erie. The map accompanied an excerpt from George Washington's journal. Washington's route from Williamsburg to the French fort on Lake Erie is shown. A decorative cartouche portrays natives engaged in tobacco production. "Six Nations" appears just under Katarakui or Ontario Lake. Lake Erie is styled Lake Erri or Okswego. Niagra Falls is located with the notation "Niagra Cataract 137 feet." The Indian names of numerous settlements appear. Jolly, Maps of America in Periodicals before 1800: 48. Maps break down our inhibitions, stimulate our glands, stir our imagination, loose our tongues. The map speaks across the barrier of language; it is sometimes claimed as the language of geography. CARL O. SAUER
"The Education of a Geographer," 1956 Let us look at the map, for maps, like faces, are the signature of history. WILL DURANT T he division's general collections, which number over 3.5 million map sheets, include both single-sheet maps and multi-sheet map series. Single-sheet maps, which provide worldwide coverage at small and medium scales, are primarily general purpose and thematic maps of continents, countries, states, counties, and cities. Multi-sheet map series, which are usually prepared at large and medium scales, also provide worldwide coverage, normally at the country and state level. single-sheet maps This detail of the 1853 map of Wyoming County in the western part of New York State is typical of the large, wall-sized county maps that gained wide circulation in the northeastern United States before the Civil War. Published in Philadelphia by Newel S. Brown, this map provides coverage of the entire county showing township boundaries, roads, towns and villages, and names of land owners, as well as enlarged insets of the individual towns and villages and views of the more prominent landmarks and structures in the county. The richly decorated borders emphasize the rural and agricultural character of the county as well as the Native American origins of the county name.

In it, he described the soil, air, and water he found upon his first visit:
'The land contains diverse sorts of earth.... The air is sweet and clear, the heavens serene, like the south parts of France.... The waters are generally good.... Of living creatures, fish, fowl, and the beasts of the woods, here are diverse sorts.... The woods are adorned with lovely flowers, for color, greatness, figure, and variety. I have seen the gardens of London best stored with that sort of beauty, but I think they may be improved by our woods.'

Even more than the small size of the colony, early governors complained of the lack of land available for granting. This paucity they universally attributed to the "extravagant" grants of their predecessors. In 1698, Governor Bellomont had his surveyor general, Augustin Graham, draw a map that he sent to the Board of Trade, "so that your Lordships will see that this whole Province is given away to about thirty persons" (see Map I
Map I: Augustin Graham, "A MAP OF the PROvince of New Yorke in American and the Territorys Adjacent," 1698. Ms. map, 72.39 cm. x 120.14 cm. CO 700 New York, No. 8, Public Record Office. This illustration is made available for information and research purposes only.

The representation of New York as cramped, land poor, and squabbling was, in any case, unlikely to raise interest in the colony among the powerful in London. In 1700, Bellomont sent another map, reminding London that New York was a potentially wealthy colony because of its proximity to the fur trade (see
