Col. Dan Smith

NARRATOR: By most measurements, America's public education system is failing its students. Among other industrial nations, the US lags in science and math scores, and is rated next to the bottom in educating students to compete in the global economy. With millions of young lives at stake and an education system in crisis, is it time to send in the troops? NCO: I just can't say enough about JROTC. We need to be everyplace. It's very important. Rear Admiral EUGENE J. CARROLL, Jr. (USN, Ret.): At the high school level, it's just too soon to start bending them, indoctrinating them with a favorable impression of the military. CADET GARVER: Yes, I'm going straight into the Army.

6. The Resurgence Of Military High Schools By Evan Gahr

http://www.theamericanenterprise.org/taeja99c.htm
By Evan Gahr S he came of age in the 1960s when the cultural elite considered the military oppressive and authoritarian—the jackboot of American imperialism worldwide. Today, Gail Paroda cherishes the nation’s armed forces. The military, after all, rescued her son Andy—without firing a single shot. Andy was not plucked from a foreign land. He was languishing in dangerous territory in Hamilton Township, New Jersey, smack in the middle of his local public school. He had bad grades and no positive influences. Before things worsened, Paroda decided to enroll Andy in the all-male Valley Forge Military Academy—one of approximately 35 military high schools nationwide that help whip faltering or under-achieving students into shape. In its advertisements, the Wayne, Pennsylvania school promises to teach students to speak a foreign language: "Yes, sir." D to a B average. Equally important, his mother has said, he acquired a sense of right and wrong. "Students are used to saying and doing whatever they please. What we preach here is civility and manners," says David Bouton, headmaster of the Benedictine High School, a military day school in Richmond, Virginia. "You have boys used to outlandish attire, and suddenly everyone is in the same uniform—no one stands out. Suddenly, conformity and uniform are the standards. This comes as a real culture shock, but those are the very same things that cause the bonding." The schools take great pains to emphasize that they are not reform schools. As Colonel Bob Miller, dean of the Fork Union Military Academy in Virginia says, sounding more like a diplomat than a soldier, "We don’t take anyone with a relationship with the law." What military high schools do provide, however, is the discipline that many teenagers need. The schools provide both a refuge from the public schools and an antidote. Instead of peer pressure to have sex or take drugs, the peer pressure at military high schools is to behave. These are lessons the kids learn early. About half the military academies begin in middle school, some even earlier.

7. Widener University: Press Release
electrical engineering after teaching at several high schools in pennsylvania positionof registrar and headmaster of pennsylvania military Preparatory School
http://www.widener.edu/hotline/articles/2002_12_29/headstory.html
Dr. Clarence R. Moll, chancellor and president emeritus of Widener University, died of natural causes Sunday, Dec. 29 at age 89. A native of Doylestown, Pa., Dr. Moll became president of Pennsylvania Military College (PMC) in 1959 and was the architect of the transition to Widener College in 1972 and Widener University in 1979. He became chancellor upon his retirement in June 1981, and in 1988 at age 75 he was officially given the title of president emeritus. He continued to maintain an office on campus.
His wife, Ruth Henderson Moll, and two sons, Robert H. and Jonathan G. Moll, survive him. Viewings will be Thursday, Jan. 2, 7 to 9 p.m. and 9 to 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 3 at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Springfield. A service will be 11 a.m. at St. Matthew's. A luncheon at University Center on 14th Street of Widener's Chester campus will immediately follow the service.
Moll first came to PMC in 1943 as associate professor of physics and electrical engineering after teaching at several high schools in Pennsylvania and New Jersey and a year as a civilian instructor in the United States Navy. He quickly moved to the position of registrar and headmaster of Pennsylvania Military Preparatory School, and by 1947 he was dean of admissions and student personnel. During his nine years in that position, he also became professor of education and coordinator of the Industrial Training Unit. He was named vice president and dean of student personnel in 1956.

9. Widener University: Visitor Center
The name pennsylvania military College was retained for the allmale, cadet offeringswere reorganized into the forerunners of today's schools and colleges.
http://www.widener.edu/ugrad/visit/visithistory.html
History of Widener University Widener University's origins can be traced to Bullock School (1821-1846), Alsop School (1846-1853), Hyatt's Select School for Boys (1853-1859), and Delaware Military Academy (1859-1862), all located in Wilmington, Delaware. In 1862, the institution was moved to Pennsylvania and chartered as Pennsylvania Military Academy. In 1892, the school, by then located on the present Main Campus site, assumed the name Pennsylvania Military College to reflect its collegiate powers and privileges. Starting in 1946, when returning veterans were admitted as noncadet students, the institution slowly progressed from an exclusively all-male military college to a co-educational liberal arts college. In 1966, it was renamed PMC College, encompassing the name of the corps and Penn Morton College for an undergraduate civilian component. The 1970s witnessed a series of changes: In 1972, the institution started focusing exclusively on the education of civilians. The academic offerings, which by that time also included several master's programs, were reorganized into the forerunners of today's schools and colleges. Concomitantly, the name Widener College was adopted in recognition of Philadelphia's Widener family. A descendant of this family, Fitz Eugene Dixon Jr., served as chairman of the Board of Trustees for many years. In addition, Widener acquired the Delaware Campus in 1976 and achieved university status in 1979. The Harrisburg Campus opened in 1989. Widener University has continued to embrace change to the benefit of its students.

It has renewed my sense of national pride and helped me to realize the sacrifice that so many Americans have made for the freedom that I so often take for granted. When I first joined, I did it mostly for selfish reasons, reasons such as physical fitness (I couldn't even do one push up or sit up!!) and finanical assistance for school. However, my motives have changed since being in the program. I am here to serve my country, lead soldiers and maintain the freedom we have because after all...freedom ain't free...
