The 9th is comprised of individuals who have a great interest in our Civil War and want to broaden their knowledge of soldier life through reenacting. Every effort is made to present a historically accurate impression, with uniforms and equipment mainly authentic reproductions. An integral part of the 9th Pennsylvania Reserves is the Civilian Committee. Members participate in battle reenactments, parades, living history, honor guards, and other events which honor our American Heritage. Many members also enjoy speaking at local schools and to community groups to make history "come alive." Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) was born on the island of Corsica, the son of the assessor to the royal tribunal. Granted free military education in France, he studied French at Autun before entering the military schools at Brienne (1779) and Paris (1784). In 1785 he was commissioned second lieutenant of artillery and was garrisoned at Valence. At Auxonne he saw the beginnings of the French Revolution, but more concerned with Corsica than France, he went home on leave to organize a revolution of his own. Eventually given command of the artillery at the siege of Toulon (1793) he was promoted general of the brigade. In 1799, members of the Directory conspired with Napoleon to take over the French government by means of a coup d'état (this event is known as the 18th Brumaire, November 9, 1799). It was successful, and Napoleon quickly asserted his superior intelligence and will over others. By 1802 he had full power (elected first consul for life), and by 1804, he proclaimed himself Emperor Napoleon I. More Information

... SCHOOLS If your ancestors were educated in German universities, they may have been recorded in the matriculation records of their schools. The library has a limited number of these records for the sixteenth to the twentieth centuries. They are not available for all states. School records sometimes contain valuable information, such as your ancestor's name, age, hometown, and enrollment and graduation dates. Sometimes they contain biographical information, including names of parents, wife, and children. The few school records that the Family History Library has are listed in the Locality Search of the Family History Library Catalog under: GERMANY - SCHOOLS GERMANY, [STATE] - SCHOOLS GERMANY, [STATE], [UNIVERSITY TOWN] - SCHOOLS The university may have kept original school records (and any published versions). In some areas, local or state archives may have these records. You can find citations for German university matriculation sources on pages 181 to 197 of Ribbe's Taschenbuch für Familiengeschichtsforschung (see the “For Further Reading” section of this outline).

Arrests made at New York airports
Investigators inspect the scene of the Flight 93 crash in western Pennsylvania. (CNN) At least eight people were arrested Thursday at airports in New York because of new security measures including four people who were seen at one airport before Tuesday's terrorist attacks. One U.S. official told CNN, "Certainly this is being looked at that a hijacking was thwarted. There is concern in our office that this may have been another attempt." ( Full story In Washington, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld said Thursday night that any future U.S. military action against those individuals, groups or nations involved in Tuesday's terrorist attacks would be "self-defense." "I don't think of it as retaliation. I don't think of it as punishment," Rumsfeld said on CNN's "Larry King Live." "The United States has every right to defend itself." Rumsfeld spoke as at least eight people - including one who allegedly was posing as a pilot were arrested at two New York-area airports. One official said there was concern that another hijacking, similar to the four that occurred on Tuesday, might be attempted. Rumsfeld also said the White House had yet to decide if exiled millionaire and longtime American adversary Osama bin Laden was behind the World Trade Center and Pentagon attacks.

    GET A FRESH START
    Historic Schools Initiative Wins
National Preservation Honor Award (Washington, D.C., October 18, 2000) - Not long ago, Pennsylvania's historic school buildings faced a dubious future. Due to state guidelines for maintenance, funding and rehabilitation, hundreds of historic schools could have been demolished in favor of big-box schools in outlying areas.
Meadeville High School Then Pennsylvania preservationists worked with state officials to rewrite the guidelines, saving schools from the wrecking ball and giving them a second chance. The National Trust today announced it will recognize the program with a 2000 National Preservation Honor Award. National Trust President Richard Moe will present the award on Thursday, Nov. 2, during the National Trust's National Preservation Conference in Los Angeles.
Sterrett School "Pennsylvania preservationists have leveled the playing field for the preservation of historic schools," Moe said. "Not only do the new guidelines which they promoted save the state money on new construction, they also prove the economic power of successful preservation and allow neighborhoods across the state to keep their cherished landmarks."

Public school, or private? Private, or parochial? Charter, or cyber charter? How about a magnet school, a boarding school or even home-schooling? A sprawling marketplace of options in kindergarten to 12th-grade education has emerged in the region. Parents can choose from institutions steeped in tradition or schools so new the lawns have yet to be seeded. They can pick a school that is free because it is public or free because it is a charter and the local school district must pick up the tuition. And schools, both public and private, are learning to hone a competitive edge. Across the region, private schools report that applications remain strong even in a weakened economy. Still, officials say, they are not resting on laurels or on ivy-covered walls; fund-raising goes on year-round to pay for upgrades and new construction. The all-boys' Haverford School has a new sports arena. So does Valley Forge Military Academy in Wayne. Construction is on the calendar at the all-girls' Springside School in Chestnut Hill.
